A dark olive- to chocolate-brown cup fungus of woodland soil and leaf litter, appearing in spring with a paler, finely scurfy outer surface.
Overview
The Common Brown Cup, long known in North American literature as Peziza badioconfusa, is one of the most frequently encountered spring cup fungi of deciduous and mixed woodland. It forms medium to large brown bowls directly on humus, leaf litter and moss, often in scattered troops along trail edges, slopes and old logging roads.
Colour is the first field character: the inner surface is a deep olive-brown to reddish- or chocolate-brown, noticeably darker and richer than the pale tan of the wood-loving pezizas, while the outer surface is a paler dull brown with a fine mealy or scurfy texture. The contrast between the two faces is often visible from a distance when the margin curls.
Within Peziza it belongs to a group whose spores are ornamented rather than smooth — under a microscope they carry warts and low ridges — and this, combined with its soil habitat and spring fruiting, defines it against most of its relatives.
How to identify it
Fruiting body
Cups are 2–10 cm across, at first deeply bowl-shaped with an inrolled edge, expanding to a shallow saucer, and often becoming irregular, split or wavy at the margin when several grow together. The overall shape is rounder and less flattened than in the Palamino Cup.
Surfaces
The upper, inner surface is smooth and dark — olive-brown, reddish brown or nearly chocolate — sometimes with a slightly olive cast when fresh and wet. The outer surface is a paler, duller brown and distinctly furfuraceous, that is, covered in tiny bran-like scurfy particles rather than true hairs.
Stipe
Essentially absent. The cup is sessile or tapers to a short, thick, blunt base rooted in humus.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is brownish to pale brown, brittle, moderately thin, and shows no latex or colour change on cutting. The spore print is white. The spores are elliptical and ornamented with warts and partial ridges, a key microscopic distinction from the smooth-spored Peziza repanda and Peziza domiciliana.
Where and when it grows
This species fruits on the ground: bare woodland soil, leaf litter, humus, moss and needle duff, and along the disturbed margins of paths, banks and ditches. It favours deciduous and mixed forests, though it also appears under conifers, and it is often abundant in areas that have been lightly disturbed by erosion or trail cutting.
Fruiting is concentrated in spring and early summer, frequently at the same time as morels, which is why it is one of the most-noticed cup fungi of the season. It is widespread and common across temperate North America and occurs in Europe, generally forming scattered groups rather than tight clusters.
Ecological role
The Common Brown Cup is a saprophyte of forest floor litter and humus. Its mycelium spreads through the decomposing leaf and needle layer and through fine woody debris incorporated into the soil, contributing to the breakdown of the litter horizon and the release of nutrients back into the rooting zone.
Fruiting bodies form when spring moisture and warming soil coincide. Each cup carries millions of asci across its inner face; ripe spores are ejected through the apical lid and rely on wind and air turbulence at ground level for dispersal, which favours the exposed banks and path edges where the species so often appears.
Similar species
Peziza badia, the Bay Cup, is very similar and shares the soil habitat, but tends to be a warmer reddish- or bay-brown with an olive tint inside and often has more strongly reticulate spore ornamentation; the two are frequently separated only microscopically. The Palamino Cup (Peziza repanda) is paler tan, thinner-fleshed, has smooth spores, flattens strongly with a recurved margin, and grows on wood, chips and sawdust rather than bare humus.
The Yellow-juice Cup (Peziza succosa) is a duller greyish brown and its cut flesh releases a watery juice that turns yellow, an immediate separation. Large brown Discina and Gyromitra species can appear superficially similar in spring, but those develop wrinkled, brain-like or saddle-shaped upper surfaces and thicker, ribbed stalk bases rather than a simple smooth cup.
