Overview

The Common Conecap, Conocybe tenera, is the best-known representative of a large and difficult genus of small, fragile, rusty-spored agarics in the family Bolbitiaceae. Conecaps appear in lawns, verges and mossy ground through the warmer half of the year, often within hours of rain and collapsing again by the end of the day.

The genus is defined by the conical to bell-shaped cap, the very slender fragile stipe, and above all by the bright rusty cinnamon spore print, which sets conecaps apart from the dark-spored mottlegills and brittlestems they share their habitats with. Microscopically, the smooth spores with a truncate germ pore and the distinctive lecythiform (skittle-shaped) cheilocystidia on the gill edge are characteristic.

Conocybe tenera in the strict sense is one species among many nearly identical ones, and the name has often been used loosely for any small brown conecap in grass. Confident naming within the genus generally requires microscopy.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 1 to 3 cm across and about as tall, narrowly conical to bluntly bell-shaped and never fully expanding. Moist caps are warm tawny brown to cinnamon or reddish ochre, fading as they dry to dull clay or pale tan, with fine translucent striations visible along the margin when wet. The surface is smooth, dull and slightly silky, not viscid.

Gills

Gills are adnexed to almost free, narrow, crowded and quite thin, pale ochre-buff when young and darkening to warm rust or cinnamon-brown as the spores mature. There is no mottling of the sort seen in Panaeolus; the colour deepens evenly across each gill face.

Stipe

The stipe is extremely slender, 4 to 10 cm long by only 1 to 2 mm thick, straight, hollow and very fragile, typically snapping cleanly if bent. It is pale buff to brownish, darker downward, finely lined lengthwise and dusted with a whitish pruina, especially near the apex, and the extreme base may be slightly swollen into a small basal bulblet. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin, pallid to brownish and unchanging when cut. The spore print is rusty cinnamon-brown, which is the key macroscopic character of the genus. Under the microscope the smooth ellipsoid spores have a broad truncate germ pore and the gill edge carries flask- or skittle-shaped cystidia with a rounded head.

Where and when it grows

The Common Conecap grows in short grass and open, disturbed ground: lawns, roadside verges, park turf, mossy banks, garden borders, dune grassland and pathside soil. It prefers moderately fertile, moist ground and appears scattered or in small troops, seldom clustered.

Fruiting extends from late spring through summer to late autumn, and individual fruit bodies are exceptionally short-lived, often appearing overnight after rain and shrivelling by the following day. The species and its close relatives are widespread across Europe and North America and occur through temperate grassland worldwide.

Ecological role

Conocybe tenera is saprotrophic, decomposing grass thatch, moss litter and humus in the top layer of soil. It forms no mycorrhizal association and is not parasitic on grass, simply recycling the accumulated dead organic matter of turf.

The genus follows a fast, opportunistic pattern. Mycelium spreads through the shallow organic layer and responds to rainfall by producing many delicate fruit bodies with minimal investment of tissue, which mature and shed their rusty spores within a day. This ephemeral strategy suits habitats that dry out quickly, and repeated flushes can occur throughout the season whenever moisture returns.

Similar species

Other Conocybe species are effectively indistinguishable in the field; the genus contains dozens of similar small tawny conecaps separated by microscopic characters such as spore size and cystidial shape. Conocybe apala, the Milky Conecap, is separated with more confidence by its pale cream to whitish, sharply conical cap.

Pholiotina species, including Pholiotina rugosa, look extremely similar but carry a distinct membranous ring on the stipe, a structure the Common Conecap never has. Bolbitius titubans is larger with a viscid, sticky yellow cap that collapses quickly, though it shares the rusty spore print. Among dark-spored grassland fungi, Panaeolina foenisecii has a broader hemispherical cap, mottled gills and a chocolate-brown print, while small Psathyrella species have blackish-brown prints and whiter, more brittle stipes.
