Common Fieldcap Identification Guide

A practical route through Agrocybe pediades: the small tan button in short grass, the ringless stalk, and the dull tobacco-brown spore print that separates it from every look-alike in the lawn.

The Encounter

This is a grassland fungus, and the setting is nearly always open and short. Mown lawns, sheep-grazed pasture, dune slacks, roadside verges, playing fields, the shaggy edge of a car park. You are not in woodland and there is no tree involved. What catches the eye is a scatter of small, smooth, pale tan or ochre buttons sitting a few centimetres above the turf on thin pale stalks, often a dozen of them across a few square metres, appearing after warm rain.

The first impression is of neatness. The cap is a clean smooth dome with no scales, no fringe, no bright colour and no gloss. That plainness is itself the character: a great many small grassland fungi are conical, striate, greasy, or brightly coloured, and the Common Fieldcap is none of those. Collect several specimens across a range of ages, because the gill colour changes dramatically with maturity and you want both ends of the sequence in your hand.

Reading the Cap

The cap is small, usually 1 to 3 cm across and rarely up to 4 cm. It starts hemispherical, almost a perfect half-ball, and expands to convex and finally to nearly flat with a very low broad hump. The margin stays even and is not lined or grooved, even when wet — check that specifically, with the cap held up against the sky, because striations at the rim would send you toward quite different genera.

Colour is warm and dull: ochre-yellow, clay-buff, tan, straw or pale honey-brown, usually slightly deeper in the centre and paler at the edge. The surface is smooth and matt, faintly tacky in wet weather and dry the rest of the time, and in hot dry spells the top often cracks into a mosaic of small plates while the flesh shrinks beneath it. That cracked appearance is a weather artefact rather than a species character, so do not read too much into it.

There is no veil remnant hanging from the rim in mature specimens, though very young buttons occasionally show a faint fibrillose edge.

The Gills

Turn the cap over. The gills are moderately crowded, broadly attached to the stipe — adnate, sometimes with a slight notch or a tiny decurrent tooth — and of unequal lengths, with shorter gills inserted between the full-length ones.

The colour progression is the diagnostic sequence. In young buttons the gills are pale, whitish to dull clay or pale grey-brown. As the spores mature they darken steadily through cinnamon and umber to a deep cigar-brown or dull tobacco brown. The gill edges usually stay noticeably paler, giving a fine light margin visible with a lens, and the faces are matt and even rather than mottled or blotchy. That evenness matters: several grassland fungi with dark gills develop a distinctly patchy, marbled gill face as they ripen, and this species does not.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is slender, roughly 2 to 6 cm long and 1.5 to 4 mm thick, more or less equal along its length or very slightly thickened at the bottom. It is pale, whitish to buff or the colour of the cap, and finely fibrillose or minutely powdery near the top.

Now check for a ring, and check carefully, because this is the highest-value negative character in the whole identification. Agrocybe pediades has no ring and no ring zone. Run a fingernail down the upper stipe: if you find a membranous collar, a persistent skirt, or even a band of adhering brown spore powder marking where a veil once sat, you are not looking at this species.

The base is simple: no bulb, no volva, no sheath. Dig rather than pull and you will often find the very bottom bound into the turf by pale mycelial threads and soil, and sometimes attached to old buried dung fragments in grazed ground. Snap the stipe: it is fibrous and slightly tough for its size, and the interior becomes hollow with age.

Flesh and Smell

Cut a specimen in half lengthwise. The flesh is thin, whitish to pale buff, and firm for such a small mushroom. Watch the cut face: there is no blueing, no reddening, no blackening, and no exudate of any kind. A completely inert section is exactly what you want here.

The smell of freshly cut flesh is faint and mealy, a dry dusty note rather than anything sharp, sweet or chemical.

Taking a Spore Print

This is the step that finishes the identification, and with a small cap it needs a little care. Choose a fully expanded specimen with gills already darkening but not yet collapsing. Cut the stipe off flush against the gills, set the cap face-down on white paper, put a drop of water on the top of the cap to keep it turgid, cover it with a glass or a small pot, and leave it two to four hours in a cool place.

The deposit is dark brown with a tobacco or dull snuff-brown tone — sometimes with a faint reddish or clay cast, but never rusty orange, never pure chocolate, never purple-black, and never black. Smear the print with a fingertip on the paper to judge the tone properly; a thin print always looks paler and greyer than it really is.

Substrate and Season

The Common Fieldcap grows on soil in open grassland, on the ground itself rather than on wood. It is particularly associated with nutrient-enriched turf: grazed pasture, ground where dung has been broken down into the soil, fertilised verges, dune grassland and sandy waste ground. It is a decomposer of grass litter and organic matter in the topsoil, not a partner of any tree.

It fruits from late spring right through to autumn, with flushes a few days after warm rain, and it is one of the fungi you are most likely to meet in a lawn in midsummer when the woods are still empty.

Sorting Out the Look-alikes

Spring Fieldcap (Agrocybe praecox) is the nearest relative and the commonest confusion. It is larger, with a cap often 4 to 8 cm, it carries a distinct membranous ring on the stipe, it has white cord-like mycelium at the base, and it grows in mulch, wood chip, hedge bottoms and gardens in spring. Ring plus habitat separates it cleanly.

Conecaps (Conocybe species) share the grassland habitat but are far more fragile, with a narrowly conical to bell-shaped cap that is often striate, a very thin brittle stipe that shatters, and a spore print that is bright rusty or cinnamon-brown rather than dull tobacco.

Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius titubans) starts as a bright egg-yellow, distinctly slimy, strongly grooved cap that collapses within a day. Nothing about its texture matches the dry matt firmness of the Common Fieldcap.

Mottlegills (Panaeolus species) grow in the same turf but give a jet-black spore print, and their maturing gills are unevenly mottled and marbled rather than evenly brown with pale edges.

Dung Roundhead (Protostropharia semiglobata) has a viscid, shiny, straw-yellow hemispherical cap, a long sticky stipe with a dark ring zone, and a purplish-black spore print.

Mushrooms in the genus Agaricus occur in the same fields but have free gills that turn pink then chocolate-brown, a ring, and a much stouter build.

A Field Sequence

Confirm you are on soil in open grass; confirm the cap is small, smooth, matt, tan and not lined at the margin; confirm the gills are adnate and darkening to cigar-brown with pale edges; run your nail down the stipe and confirm there is no ring; cut and confirm nothing changes colour; then print and confirm dull tobacco-brown. What separates Common Fieldcap from Spring Fieldcap?
Three things. Common Fieldcap has no ring on the stipe at all, while Spring Fieldcap carries a distinct membranous ring. Common Fieldcap is much smaller, usually 1 to 3 cm across against 4 to 8 cm. And their habitats differ: Common Fieldcap grows in open grassland and grazed turf, whereas Spring Fieldcap favours wood chip, mulch beds and hedge bottoms, mainly in spring.

Does it depend on trees?
No. It forms no partnership with tree roots and is a saprotroph living in the topsoil, breaking down dead grass litter and organic matter, including material derived from dung in grazed fields. That independence is why it thrives in wholly treeless habitats such as dunes, pasture and mown amenity grassland.
