A slender, pinkish-buff woodland mushroom whose thin cap develops a deep central funnel above crowded white decurrent gills.

Overview

The Common Funnel is one of the most frequently encountered woodland agarics of the summer and autumn seasons, appearing scattered through leaf litter wherever broadleaf woodland has a reasonable litter layer. Its shape is the archetype of the funnel mushrooms: a thin, wide cap that sinks into a deep central depression like a shallow wine glass.

The species was long placed in Clitocybe as Clitocybe gibba and is still widely listed under that name. Molecular work separated a group of thin-fleshed, deeply funnelled, warm-coloured species into the genus Infundibulicybe, whose name simply means funnel-head, and I. gibba is the type of that group.

It is distinctive for its slight build. Unlike the thick-fleshed Clouded Funnel, the Common Funnel is papery-thin in the cap, so the crowded white gills show through as fine radial lines when the cap is held up to the light.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 4-8 cm across, convex with a small central bump when very young, quickly flattening and then becoming deeply funnel-shaped, often with a wavy or split margin in age. The surface is dry and matt to finely silky, pale pinkish-tan, ochre-buff or leather-brown, usually paler at the margin and sometimes faintly radially fibrillose. The flesh is very thin, so the cap feels flimsy.

Gills

The gills are crowded, narrow, thin and strongly decurrent, running well down the stipe. They are white to very pale cream throughout life, contrasting clearly with the warmer tan cap, and are forked and interveined near the stipe.

Stipe

The stipe is 3-8 cm long and 5-10 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly swollen at the base, pale buff and usually paler than the cap. It is elastic and fibrous rather than brittle, and the base carries a conspicuous tuft of white woolly mycelium binding leaf litter. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin, white and unchanging, with a faint sweetish or slightly almond-like smell. The spore print is white; the spores are smooth and tear-shaped, in contrast to the warty spores of the tawny funnels in Paralepista.

Where and when it grows

The Common Funnel grows on the ground in leaf litter, most often in broadleaf woodland under oak, beech and birch, but also in mixed and coniferous woods, on heathland edges and in bracken litter. It tolerates a wide range of soils and is equally at home on woodland rides, in hedge bottoms and among moss in old plantations.

It is one of the earlier funnels to appear, often fruiting from midsummer and continuing well into autumn. Fruit bodies come up singly or in scattered troops, sometimes in loose arcs. The species is very widespread and common throughout Europe, temperate Asia and North America.

Ecological role

Infundibulicybe gibba is a saprotroph of the litter layer. Its mycelium colonises fallen leaves, needles, bracken stems and fine twigs, decomposing them and returning nutrients to the soil surface. The dense white mycelial cushion at the stipe base is often visible when a fruit body is lifted, still bound to the leaves it was breaking down.

Because it depends on litter rather than living roots, the species can persist in woodland that has been thinned or replanted, and it colonises new leaf falls quickly. Fruiting responds strongly to summer rain, which is why it appears earlier in the season than most of the grey and white funnels.

Similar species

The Tawny Funnel, Paralepista flaccida, is a deeper rusty orange-brown, has more crowded gills that age to the same tawny colour as the cap, grows in dense clustered troops, and has warted spores giving a faintly cream deposit. Infundibulicybe geotropa, the Trooping Funnel, is far larger and taller with a persistent central umbo in the funnel and a stout stipe.

Lepista flaccida aside, Clitocybe phyllophila and other white funnels are chalk-white and frosted rather than pinkish-tan. Lactarius species with funnel-shaped caps can look similar in outline but exude milk when the gills are cut, and Cantharellus chanterelles have blunt forking ridges rather than true blade-like gills.
