Common Greenshield Lichen Identification Guide
A field method for Flavoparmelia caperata: the broad apple-green rosette on oak bark, the wrinkled sorediate centre, and how to tell it from the grey shield lichens and the speckled Punctelia species.
The Encounter
You are standing under a mature broadleaved tree — an oak, an ash, an old apple in a neglected orchard — looking at the trunk or the underside of a big lateral limb, and a large flat rosette of pale yellow-green catches your eye against the grey bark. It is broad, loosely attached, and its outline is made of rounded overlapping lobes, like a spill of thick green paint that dried with crinkled edges. In damp weather the whole thing looks soft and vivid; in dry weather it is paler, greyer and slightly brittle.
Flavoparmelia caperata is one of the largest and most conspicuous foliose lichens on tree bark across much of the temperate world, and it is often the first shield lichen anyone learns. The identification is genuinely straightforward once you know which four things to look at: colour, lobe shape, what is happening in the centre of the thallus, and what the underside looks like.
The Right Tools and the Right Approach
Bring a hand lens and, if you can, a small sharp blade. Do not tear a whole rosette off the bark to examine it. Almost everything you need is visible in place, and the one feature that requires the underside can be checked by gently lifting a marginal lobe with a fingertip or the blade tip, because this species is only loosely attached around its edge.
If the lichen is dry, wet a small patch with a few drops of water and wait a minute. Lichens change colour and translucency dramatically on wetting, and consistent observations require you to know which state you are describing.
Reading the Lobes
Start at the margin, where the growth is youngest and cleanest. The lobes are broad — typically 3 to 8 mm wide — flat to slightly concave, rounded at the tips, and they overlap one another irregularly like roof tiles. They are not narrow, not strap-like, not deeply divided, and they carry no hairs or eyelash-like cilia along their edges. Edges are often slightly raised and crisped, especially in older parts.
The overall rosette can reach 5 to 20 cm across, and adjacent rosettes commonly fuse into large irregular sheets that run for half a metre along a limb.
Reading the Colour
The colour is the single most memorable character: a distinct yellow-green, apple-green or pale lime, quite unlike the blue-grey or ash-grey of the Parmelia shields growing beside it. That yellowish cast comes from usnic acid in the outer layer of the thallus, and it is present in wet and dry states alike, though dry thalli are paler and more grey-green while wet ones are vivid and slightly translucent.
If you are unsure whether a thallus is truly yellow-green or merely grey, find a grey shield lichen on the same trunk and put them side by side. The comparison is instant and decisive.
The Centre of the Thallus
Now move your lens to the middle of the rosette, the oldest part. In a mature Flavoparmelia caperata this area is strongly wrinkled and ridged, with a network of raised folds, and it is usually cracked. On and around those wrinkles you will find patches of soredia: powdery to coarsely granular masses, slightly paler than the thallus, that erupt through the surface and look like scattered piles of green-grey dust.
These soralia are diffuse and irregular, forming in blotches over the centre rather than in neat lines along the lobe margins or in tidy discs. They are vegetative propagules — packets of fungal threads wrapped around algal cells — and they are how this species mostly reproduces. The combination of a wrinkled, cracked, diffusely sorediate centre with a smooth, clean lobed margin is highly characteristic.
The Underside
Lift a marginal lobe. The lower surface is black over the centre of the thallus and fades to a pale brown or tan band around the outer 3 to 10 mm. Scattered across the black area are rhizines: short, simple, unbranched black anchoring threads. Toward the pale margin the underside is largely bare of rhizines, which is why the edges lift so readily.
A two-tone underside — black centre, brown margin, simple rhizines — is a genuinely useful confirming character and separates this species from several grey look-alikes with uniformly black or uniformly pale undersides.
Fruiting Bodies, and Why There Is No Spore Print
People coming to lichens from mushrooms often ask how to take a spore print. You cannot, and you do not need to. Lichens are not fleshy fungi; the fungal partner is spread through a permanent thallus and produces spores only occasionally, from small disc-shaped apothecia.
In Flavoparmelia caperata, apothecia are uncommon. When present they are shallow discs a few millimetres across with a brown to reddish-brown surface and a thin rim of thallus tissue around them, usually sitting on the wrinkled central area. Their scarcity is itself informative: a large green shield lichen carrying abundant apothecia and no soredia is more likely to be something else.
If you want chemical confirmation, the standard spot tests are done on a scraped patch of the inner white medulla rather than on the surface. In this species the medulla gives a strong orange-red reaction with the paraphenylenediamine reagent, reflecting protocetraric acid, while the outer surface does not flush deep red with potassium hydroxide. These tests are optional confirmations; the field characters above are usually enough.
Substrate and Season
This is primarily a bark-dwelling lichen. It favours the trunks and large limbs of broadleaved trees with mildly acidic bark — oak is the classic host, along with ash, birch, beech, willow, apple and hawthorn — and it also grows on old fence rails, wooden gateposts and occasionally on siliceous rock and mossy boulders.
It is a lichen of reasonably clean but not pristine air. It was historically scarce in heavily industrialised regions and has spread back into towns and suburbs as sulphur dioxide levels have fallen, so its presence on urban street trees is a genuine environmental signal. It tolerates a moderate amount of nitrogen enrichment but is not a specialist of the very nutrient-rich bark that suits the orange lichens.
Lichens have no fruiting season. The thallus persists year-round and grows slowly, a few millimetres a year, which means a rosette 15 cm across has been sitting on that branch for a decade or more. Look for it in any month; wet weather simply makes it look better.
Sorting Out the Look-alikes
Rock Greenshield (Flavoparmelia baltimorensis) is the closest relative in colour and lobe form, but it grows on rock rather than bark, its central area is more strongly and coarsely wrinkled and warted, and it lacks the diffuse powdery soralia, instead breaking up into bursting pustules. Substrate plus the nature of the central eruptions separates them.
Speckled Greenshield (Flavopunctelia flaventior) shares the yellow-green colour but carries scattered tiny white pores called pseudocyphellae on the upper surface — visible with a lens as fine white dots — and its soralia tend to form along lobe margins rather than across the wrinkled centre. No white dots means not this.
Hammered Shield Lichen (Parmelia sulcata) is the standard grey neighbour: blue-grey rather than green, its surface marked with a raised network of white ridges and cracks, with soredia forming along those lines. Colour and the white reticulate pattern are enough.
Rough Speckled Shield (Punctelia rudecta and relatives) are greenish-grey to grey with obvious white pseudocyphellae dots and pale to brown undersides.
Ruffle lichens (Parmotrema) have much larger lobes with a broad, bare, rhizine-free zone underneath and often black cilia along the lobe margins.
Rock-shields (Xanthoparmelia) are yellow-green like this species but grow tightly pressed to rock with narrower, more overlapping lobes and a much flatter, closely attached habit.
A Field Sequence
Confirm bark substrate; confirm broad rounded overlapping lobes with no cilia; confirm the yellow-green rather than grey colour by direct comparison; check the centre for a wrinkled, cracked, diffusely powdery sorediate zone; check the upper surface has no white dots; lift a lobe to confirm a black underside with a brown margin and simple rhizines.
