Common Puffball Identification Guide

A step-by-step field method for Lycoperdon perlatum, covering the club-shaped body, the detachable spines that leave a pearl-like net of scars, the internal section and how to separate it from other puffballs and earthballs on structure alone.

First Impression and Setting

You are usually in woodland when you meet this species, standing on needle litter under pine or spruce, or on leaf mould beneath beech and oak. It also turns up along shaded track edges, on the mossy verges of forest roads, on old woodchip and in disturbed ground beside paths. It is gregarious: a single body is unusual, and small troops or loose clusters of a dozen or more are typical.

What catches the eye is a white to off-white object the size of a plum, standing upright rather than lying on the ground. It is not spherical. The mature outline is that of an inverted pear, a small club, or a stubby skittle: a rounded head sitting on a narrower stalk-like base. Freshly emerged individuals look chalk white and slightly frosted. Older ones have gone dingy tan or olive-buff and look shabby and deflated.

Reading the Shape

Take a whole body in your hand and read the proportions. The head is generally 2 to 6 cm across and the total height 3 to 8 cm, with the sterile base making up a third to a half of that height. The base tapers downward but never becomes a true slender stalk; it is a broad, solid pedestal. The transition from head to base is a smooth shoulder rather than an abrupt joint.

At the very bottom you will usually find a small tuft of fine, short white mycelial threads binding needles and soil crumbs. A conspicuous rope of thick white cords running away through the litter indicates a different species, discussed below.

Reading the Skin

This is the character that names the species, and it deserves the most attention.

Spines and warts. The outer skin of a young body is covered in short, conical, detachable spines, each typically half a millimetre to two millimetres tall, and each is ringed at its base by a circle of much smaller granular warts. The effect at arm's length is of a body dusted with coarse sugar; under a lens it resolves into a repeating pattern of one large spine surrounded by a rosette of small ones.

The scar net. Rub a patch of the skin with a thumb, or simply look at an older body where rain and handling have done the work. The spines break off cleanly and leave behind pale, smooth, rounded scars, each ringed by the persisting granules. The result is a delicate reticulate network across the surface, often described as a pattern of interlocking pale circles. That mesh of shed-spine scars is the most dependable macroscopic feature of this species, and it is why the classical epithet refers to pearls.

Colour progression. White, then cream, then dull ochre to yellow-brown, finally greyish or olive-brown. Bruised areas discolour slowly to dull yellowish or brownish, with no sharp or immediate change.

The apical pore. As the body matures, the top of the head thins, splits and opens into a single round mouth a few millimetres across. A gentle tap on a mature one sends up a visible smoke of brown dust.

Cutting One in Half

Always section at least one individual from top to bottom with a sharp knife. The internal structure is more informative than the outside.

Young state. The interior is uniformly white, firm, moist and homogeneous, with the texture of a dense marshmallow. In section you should see two zones: the upper gleba, which is the spore-producing tissue, and the lower subgleba or sterile base, which is visibly chambered like a fine sponge. The boundary between them is usually distinct, and the subgleba often extends a short column a little way up into the gleba.

Maturing. The gleba yellows, then goes olive, then collapses into a loose brown powder threaded with fine capillitial fibres. The sterile base does not follow. It stays spongy and structural and often persists on the ground through winter as an empty, ragged, brown cup on a firm pedestal.

Colour change on cutting. There is no rapid or dramatic change. Cut surfaces of the white stage discolour only gradually to pale yellowish over many minutes. Any instant, strong colour reaction is a signal to look at other genera.

Getting and Reading a Spore Deposit

You cannot make a conventional gilled-mushroom spore print here, but you can and should take a deposit.

Find a mature body with an open apical pore. Hold it a centimetre above a sheet of white paper and squeeze the head gently, or tap it with a fingernail. A puff of dust settles out. Let it sit for a minute, then read the colour against the white background: a warm olive-brown to dark yellow-brown. Dark chocolate brown, purple-brown, and black all point elsewhere.

Under a microscope the spores are globose, roughly 3.5 to 4.5 micrometres across, minutely spiny, and mixed with long, thick-walled, branching capillitium threads.

Substrate and Season

The species is a ground-dwelling decomposer of litter and buried organic matter. Expect it on soil, humus, needle beds and leaf mould in both conifer and broadleaf woodland, along woodland edges and forest tracks, and on old woodchip mulch and mossy grass close to trees.

Fruiting runs from mid-summer through late autumn in temperate regions, peaking after warm rain, and the tough spent bases persist far into winter. It is one of the most widely distributed puffballs across Europe, North America and temperate Asia.

Separating the Look-Alikes on Structure Alone

Stump Puffball (Apioperdon pyriforme) is the closest confusion. It grows directly on wood, on stumps, logs and buried timber, usually in tight crowded clusters, and it anchors with conspicuous thick white mycelial cords that you can pull free like string. Its surface is nearly smooth to finely granular, never carrying tall conical spines, and it therefore never develops the pearl-scar net. Habit plus surface separates the two immediately.

Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum) is a very different animal despite the superficial resemblance. Its skin is thick, tough, leathery and yellow-ochre, patterned with coarse angular scales rather than detachable spines. It sits low and rounded with almost no sterile base and no apical pore, splitting irregularly instead. Cut one and the interior is firm and purple-black to blackish from an early stage, not white and spongy.

Bovista species are typically small, nearly spherical, almost stalkless, and lack a chambered sterile base, and their outer skin often peels away as a papery layer to reveal a smooth lead-grey inner wall.

Pestle Puffball (Lycoperdon excipuliforme) is larger and dramatically longer-stalked, with an elongated club-shaped sterile portion that can be as long as the head, and its ornamentation is finer.

Other spiny Lycoperdon species have longer, darker brown to blackish spines that often converge in tufts, and their scar pattern is less regular.

Young Amanita buttons are occasionally mistaken for small white puffballs. The distinction is entirely internal: section vertically and an Amanita button reveals the outline of a compressed cap, stipe and gills embedded in the tissue, whereas this species is uniformly white and structureless above its chambered base. This is the single reason never to identify a round white fungus without cutting it.
