Common Toadskin Lichen Identification Guide

Where You Find It and What You See

The setting is bare rock in the open. Think of a granite dome in the Appalachians, a quartzite ledge, a gneiss outcrop on a wooded hillside where the trees thin out, a scattering of large boulders on a ridge, or a roadside cliff face cut through hard acidic rock. This lichen wants full sun to bright dappled light, good air movement, and a surface that runs dry between rains. It is characteristic of eastern North America, from New England and the Great Lakes south through the Appalachians and into the Ozarks, and it can carpet suitable rock in loose colonies of dozens of thalli.

The first impression is of small, stiff, brownish shields stuck to the stone, each one lifting and curling at the edges, each one warty. Dry, they are ash-grey to grey-brown, hard and audibly crisp. Wet, the same thalli darken to olive-brown or warm reddish brown, soften, flatten and become almost rubbery. If you find a colony on a dry day, tip a little water onto one and wait a minute; almost everything you need to read becomes clearer.

The Single Point of Attachment

Before anything else, slide a fingernail under the edge and lift. The thallus is umbilicate: the entire structure is anchored to the rock by one short, stout central holdfast, like a shield held by a single boss on its back. The margins are entirely free and often lift well clear of the substrate.

This is a genus-level feature shared with the umbilicate lichens generally, and establishing it first cuts the possibilities down to a handful of candidates.

Reading the Upper Surface

Size and outline. Thalli are typically 2 to 8 cm across, occasionally larger, roughly circular in young material and becoming irregular, lobed and coarsely torn with age. Old thalli often split into ragged sectors.

Pustules. This is the character the common name records and the one that decides the identification. The upper surface is thrown into numerous rounded blisters, or pustules, 1 to 5 mm across, standing proud of the surface like a scatter of low domes. They are hollow underneath, and they are not solid warts: press one and it gives slightly, and in section it is a raised bubble of cortex and medulla over a void. The resulting texture is coarse, bumpy and irregular, entirely unlike a smooth leathery sheet.

Colour. Grey, ash-grey, grey-brown, olive-brown or reddish brown, usually paler and greyer on the exposed tops of the pustules where weathering has scoured them, and darker in the troughs between. Some populations run distinctly rusty or foxy.

Texture. Dry material is brittle and cracks if bent, so handle it wet if you intend to keep it intact.

Reading the Lower Surface

Turn a thallus over. The underside is a strong diagnostic zone and beginners often skip it.

Colour. Pale tan, buff or pinkish brown over much of its area, becoming darker brown to black toward the central holdfast.

Texture. Essentially smooth to slightly roughened or minutely granular, and without rhizines, without a dense coal-black felt or tomentum, and without the branching root-like structures that some other rock lichens carry.

Mirrored pits. Every pustule on the upper surface corresponds to a depression or pit on the lower surface. Hold the thallus up and match them: bumps above, dimples below. That direct correspondence is a clean, purely structural confirmation that the bumps are true pustules rather than superficial warts or attached debris.

Fruiting Bodies and Spores

Apothecia. Common Toadskin is frequently fertile, which is useful because several close relatives rarely are. The apothecia are jet black, sessile, roughly circular buttons 0.5 to 3 mm across, sitting directly on the upper surface and often clustered on or between the pustules. Their discs are gyrose: instead of a flat plate, the surface is thrown into concentric or contorted raised ridges and furrows, so under a lens each disc looks like a fingerprint, a tiny maze, or the folded surface of a brain. A mature thallus dotted with black gyrose buttons is an extremely characteristic sight.

What replaces a spore print. A conventional spore print is not achievable from a lichen, since the ascomata are too small and the spore output too sparse to build a visible deposit. The equivalent is a squash mount: cut an apothecium off with a razor blade, mount it in water, press gently under a cover slip, and examine at 400x.

What you should see. The result here is unusually distinctive and is worth the trouble. Each ascus contains a single, very large, dark brown, muriform spore, typically 40 to 70 micrometres long by 20 to 35 wide, divided by both transverse and longitudinal walls into a brick-wall arrangement of many chambers. One giant brown brick-wall spore per ascus is a genus-defining feature and immediately separates this group from its nearest visual relatives, which pack eight small colourless spores into each ascus.

Chemistry. The medulla contains gyrophoric acid. Flick back a lifted margin, expose the white inner tissue, and apply a drop of household bleach solution: the medulla flushes a clear red or orange-red (C+ red), usually within a second or two, and then fades. Potassium hydroxide on the cortex gives no reaction. This spot test is quick and highly informative.

Substrate, Aspect and Season

The substrate requirement is strict: hard, acidic, non-calcareous rock. Granite, gneiss, quartzite, schist and sandstone all qualify; limestone and other base-rich rock do not. Look on sun-exposed vertical and steeply sloping faces, boulder tops and shoulders, and rock in open woodland glades, rather than in deep shade or on wet seepage faces.

There is no season. The lichen is perennial and slow-growing, and a large thallus may represent decades of growth. The practical seasonality is about moisture: work after rain or with a water bottle, since wet thalli show their true colour, flexibility and surface relief.

Separating the Look-Alikes on Structure Alone

Smooth Rock Lichen (Umbilicaria mammulata) is the commonest confusion in the same habitat and geography. It is much larger, often 10 to 30 cm across, its upper surface is smooth to only gently undulating chocolate-brown leather with no pustules at all, and its lower surface is coal black and densely woolly or velvety to the touch. Surface texture alone settles it in seconds.

Umbilicaria muhlenbergii has a smooth to finely wrinkled upper surface with radiating ridges rather than discrete blisters, and prominent black gyrose apothecia. Its lower side is pale and smooth, and the surface never develops the coarse hollow domes.

Umbilicaria hyperborea is the closest structural match, since its surface is genuinely bullate and it carries abundant gyrose apothecia. It is a northern and alpine species of cold rock, more strongly and finely blistered, and it is separated definitively by the asci: eight small colourless spores each, against one huge brown muriform spore here.

Other Lasallia species share the pustulate surface and the single-spored asci. Work on fertility, thallus colour and pustule size, since some relatives are rarely fertile and produce coarse granular outgrowths on the upper surface that this species does not.

Dermatocarpon species are also umbilicate but grow on damp, often base-rich rock, are grey and smooth with a matte bloom, and produce sunken flask-shaped perithecia appearing as tiny dark dots rather than raised gyrose discs.

How do I separate it from the smooth umbilicate lichens growing alongside it?
Check surface texture and the underside. Umbilicaria mammulata is far larger with a smooth chocolate-brown leathery surface and a coal-black woolly underside, while this species is smaller, coarsely blistered, and pale tan and smooth beneath. Under a microscope the separation is absolute: each ascus here contains one huge brown brick-walled spore, whereas Umbilicaria packs eight small colourless spores per ascus.
