Laetiporus conifericola
Also called conifer sulphur shelf, western conifer laetiporus
Vivid orange overlapping shelves with a sulphur-yellow pore surface, fruiting on conifers in western North America. Substrate is the main character separating it from its hardwood-dwelling relatives.
Overview
Laetiporus conifericola was described when the wide-ranging Laetiporus sulphureus concept was broken into several species defined by substrate, colour and genetics. As the name says, it is the conifer-dwelling member of the group in western North America, and it is often the most eye-catching fungus in a Pacific Northwest forest — bright orange shelves visible from a considerable distance against dark bark.
Like all Laetiporus species it is an annual, soft-fleshed polypore. Fruiting bodies appear over a few days, expand quickly, and are past their prime within a couple of weeks, drying to a pale, brittle, chalk-white husk that may cling to the trunk for months. The dramatic colour comes from pigments in the outer flesh and fades from the margin inward as the bracket matures.
It causes a brown heart rot in large conifers and is a familiar sight on old Douglas-fir, hemlock, spruce and true fir trunks. Its presence generally indicates that a substantial volume of heartwood has already been consumed.
How to identify it
Cap
Caps are fan-shaped to broadly semicircular, 8–30 cm across and 1–3 cm thick, growing in dense overlapping tiers or clustered rosettes on the side of a trunk. The surface is suede-like to smooth, sometimes faintly zoned, and coloured bright orange to orange-red, brightest at the growing margin and fading to pale orange or cream with age. Margins are thick, blunt and often wavy or lobed.
Pores
The pore surface is bright sulphur-yellow, becoming duller yellow to pale buff as the bracket ages. Pores are small, round to angular, roughly 2–4 per millimetre. The tube layer is shallow and the same yellow tone runs slightly onto the underside of the margin.
Stipe
Absent. Caps are sessile, attached broadly and laterally to the bark, frequently fused along a common base where several shelves emerge from a single wound or branch scar.
Flesh & spore print
The context is thick, soft and moist when fresh, white to pale yellow, and becomes dry, crumbly and chalk-white as the bracket ages. It does not bruise to a different colour. The spore deposit is white.
Where and when it grows
This species fruits on conifers: true firs, spruce, western hemlock, Douglas-fir, and occasionally pine and larch. It appears on living trunks around branch scars and wounds, on standing snags, on large fallen logs, and on stumps, generally at heights ranging from ground level to well up the bole.
The range is western North America — coastal and montane forests from Alaska and British Columbia south through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and into California. Fruiting occurs from summer into autumn, most reliably after sustained rain, and a colonised trunk may produce fresh shelves for many consecutive years from the same internal mycelium.
Ecological role
Laetiporus conifericola causes a brown cubical rot of the heartwood. It breaks down cellulose and hemicellulose but leaves lignin behind, so decayed wood becomes reddish-brown, shrinks and separates into cubical blocks crossed by thin sheets of white mycelium. In large conifers this rot can hollow the central column of the trunk while the sapwood and crown remain functional.
The fungus enters through branch stubs, fire scars and mechanical wounds, and can persist inside a living tree for decades. The internal cavities it creates are used by cavity-nesting birds and by bats and small mammals, and the eventual structural failure of colonised trunks helps generate canopy gaps and coarse woody debris. The rapid annual turnover of its soft brackets also releases a large nutrient pulse to the forest floor each autumn.
Similar species
Laetiporus sulphureus is the eastern hardwood counterpart, essentially identical in colour and shelving habit but occurring on oak and other broadleaf trees rather than conifers; substrate is the primary separator. Laetiporus gilbertsonii, also western, grows on eucalyptus and on oaks and tends to be paler pink-orange, while L. huroniensis occupies conifers around the Great Lakes.
Laetiporus cincinnatus differs clearly in having a white to cream pore surface and forming ground-level rosettes at the base of oaks. Away from the genus, Pycnoporellus alboluteus and P. fulgens form orange masses on conifer wood but are much thinner and more delicate, with coarse ragged pores or a spiny, torn surface rather than the thick fleshy shelves and fine yellow pore layer seen here.
