Overview
The Conifer Mazegill is the standard gill-bearing bracket of coniferous deadwood and worked softwood. From above it is a warm rusty brown, roughly zoned and coarsely hairy, with a vivid orange to yellow-orange band at the actively growing edge that makes fresh specimens easy to pick out on grey timber. Underneath it carries thick, radiating, ochre to rust-brown plates that fork and interconnect, ranging from almost clean gills to a partial maze depending on the specimen.
Gloeophyllum is a genus of brown-rot brackets, which sets it apart from most similar-looking gill-bearing brackets: while Lenzites and Trametes bleach the wood, this fungus removes cellulose and leaves it dark, cracked and crumbling. Its tolerance for dry, sun-exposed and heat-stressed conditions is exceptional, and it thrives on situations that few other fungi will take.
That tolerance explains its familiarity in built environments: it is one of the most common decay fungi on outdoor softwood construction, from fence rails and decking to the exposed timbers of buildings and bridges.
How to identify it
Cap
Brackets are 2-12 cm across and 0.5-1 cm thick, semicircular to fan- or shelf-shaped, broadly attached and stalkless, often fused into long rows or overlapping tiers. The upper surface is coarsely hairy to velvety, especially toward the base, roughly zoned in rust-brown, ginger, dark reddish brown and near-black in older parts, with a distinctive bright orange to yellow-orange band at the growing margin of active specimens. Old brackets darken overall and may become nearly blackish at the base.
Gills
The underside consists of thick, radiating plates rather than round pores. They are spaced roughly 1-2 mm apart, blunt-edged, frequently forking and joined by cross-walls so that the pattern is partly maze-like, and coloured ochre, tan or rust-brown — never white. This warm colouring is the quickest separator from the whitish-plated hardwood mazegills.
Flesh & spore print
The context is thin, tough and leathery, rust-brown to yellow-brown, and dries rigid. There is no stipe. The spore print is white, from smooth cylindrical spores — a striking contrast with the brown hymenophore.
Where and when it grows
It fruits on conifer wood of all kinds: fallen trunks, stumps, cut log ends, timber stacks, sawn boards, fence rails, decking, bridge timbers and structural beams exposed to weather. Spruce, pine, fir, larch and Douglas fir are all used, and it occasionally takes hardwood. It favours sunlit, well-drained and frequently dry situations, and is often abundant on south-facing log piles and cut stacks.
The species is widespread throughout the coniferous and mixed forests of Europe, Asia and North America, extending into managed and urban settings wherever outdoor softwood is present. New brackets develop from summer through autumn, but the tough fruit bodies persist year-round and rehydrate after rain.
Ecological role
The Conifer Mazegill is a brown-rot saprotroph. It degrades cellulose while leaving lignin largely intact, so the affected wood turns dark reddish brown and splits into cubical blocks that crumble easily — the classic signature of this decay type and the reason the species is significant in outdoor timber.
In natural forest it colonises sun-exposed fallen conifer trunks and stumps, particularly in clearings, burnt ground and windthrow, and it is notably tolerant of desiccation and heat. Its mycelium survives long dry periods in the wood and resumes growth when moisture returns. The brown crumbly residue it produces becomes a rooting and nesting medium for invertebrates, and the persistent brackets shelter beetles and mites through winter.
Similar species
Lenzites betulinus, the Birch Mazegill, has whitish to cream plates, a paler whitish-grey zoned and hairy upper surface, and grows on hardwood, especially birch — the plate colour alone separates the two at a glance. Gloeophyllum odoratum forms thicker, lumpier, more cushion-like brackets with a poroid to shallowly maze-like ochre surface and an anise-like scent, usually on spruce stumps.
Gloeophyllum trabeum is duller brown with a mixed poroid to elongated-maze surface and finer hairs, and is even more frequent on worked timber. Daedaleopsis confragosa has a whitish maze underside that blushes red where scratched and grows on willow and birch. Trametes species on conifer wood have white round pores and a white context rather than brown plates and brown flesh.
