A tightly clustered woodland fungus of conifer stumps, recognised by its tan-ochre cap and gills that shift from whitish to a distinctive smoky grey.
Overview
Conifer Tuft (Hypholoma capnoides) is one of the small cluster-forming woodlovers in the family Strophariaceae, a group characterised by dark purple-brown spore deposits, gills that darken markedly with age, and a fondness for dead wood. The species epithet capnoides means "smoky", a direct reference to the grey tone the gills take on as the fruit body matures — the single most useful character for separating it from its relatives.
Within the genus Hypholoma, this species occupies the conifer niche. Where its close relatives colonise hardwood or occur across a wider range of substrates, Conifer Tuft is strongly associated with pine, spruce and fir stumps, often erupting in dense tufts from the cut surface or from buried roots. Dozens of caps may crowd together, their stipes fused at the base into a common tuft.
It is a common and widespread Northern Hemisphere fungus, fruiting late in the season and often persisting into frosty weather when most woodland agarics have finished. In many conifer plantations it is among the last mushrooms of the year still producing fresh caps.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2–7 cm across, at first convex or hemispherical with an incurved margin, expanding to broadly convex or nearly flat, sometimes with a low broad umbo. The surface is smooth, dry to slightly greasy in damp weather, and coloured warm tan, ochre-yellow or orange-buff, typically darker in the centre and fading to a paler straw or cream tone at the margin. Young caps may carry a few whitish veil fibrils along the rim.
Gills
The gills are crowded, narrow and adnate to slightly notched at the stipe. They begin whitish to pale greyish, pass through a distinctive smoky ash-grey stage, and finally become dark grey-brown to purple-brown as the spores mature. At no stage do they show the greenish or sulphur-yellow tint seen in some relatives — the progression is white, to grey, to smoky purple-brown.
Stipe
The stipe is 3–10 cm long and 3–8 mm thick, slender, often curved where caps jostle in a cluster, and hollow at maturity. It is pale yellowish or whitish in the upper part and becomes rusty ochre to rich brown toward the base. There is no true persistent ring, only a faint fibrillose veil zone near the top that may be darkened by falling spores.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thin, whitish to pale yellowish in the cap, browner in the stipe base, with a mild unremarkable odour. It does not change colour appreciably when cut. The spore print is a dark purple-brown, and mature spores dusting nearby caps often give a lilac-brown film that helps confirm the genus in the field.
Where and when it grows
Conifer Tuft is a wood-inhabiting species restricted almost entirely to coniferous substrates: the stumps, fallen trunks, buried roots and larger branch debris of pine, spruce, larch and fir. It shows a strong preference for well-rotted wood that has already lost its bark, and is a familiar sight on the sawn surfaces of old stumps in commercial conifer plantations. Fruiting is typically in dense caespitose tufts of ten to fifty caps, occasionally in smaller groups of two or three on scattered fragments.
The main season is autumn, often peaking after the first cold nights, and fruiting frequently continues into early winter wherever the ground remains unfrozen. The species is widely distributed across temperate and boreal regions of Europe, northern Asia and North America, following the natural and planted range of its host conifers, and extends well into montane and subalpine forest.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic fungus and a wood-decay specialist. Its mycelium colonises dead conifer heartwood and sapwood, producing a white rot in which both lignin and cellulose are broken down, leaving the wood pale, soft and fibrous. Because conifer wood is rich in resins and other compounds that slow decay, the fungi able to work on it form a distinctive community, and Hypholoma capnoides is one of its regular members.
The mycelium may occupy a stump for many years, fruiting each autumn from the same colonised mass. In doing so it converts standing dead wood and logging residue into soft material readily worked by mites, springtails, beetle larvae and bacteria, accelerating the return of nutrients to the forest floor. Its late-season fruiting also makes it a resource for fungus-feeding invertebrates at a time when little else is producing fresh tissue.
Similar species
Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) is the closest match in form and clustering habit, but its cap is a brighter greenish-yellow to sulphur tone and, crucially, its young gills are distinctly greenish-yellow rather than white or grey; it also occurs commonly on hardwood as well as conifers. Brick Cap (Hypholoma lateritium) is larger and more robust with a brick-red to rusty-orange cap centre and a whitish margin, pale to olive-grey gills, and grows chiefly on broadleaved stumps.
Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata) also grows in groups on conifer wood but is separated at once by its rusty-brown spore print, its rusty-brown mature gills, and the distinct membranous ring on its stipe. Small Pholiota species may share the tawny cap colour but usually have viscid, scaly caps and a rusty-brown rather than purple-brown spore deposit.
