A small tan-buff mushroom that fruits directly from fallen spruce and pine cones, recognised by extremely crowded gills and a hairy, cord-like rooting stem base.
Overview
The Conifercone Cap is a specialist of a single, very predictable habitat: the fallen cones of conifers lying on the forest floor. Where a cone-feeding fungus is found in late autumn, this is usually the species responsible. Individual mushrooms are small and unremarkable in colour, but the substrate makes them easy to name.
Baeospora is a small genus set apart by exceptionally crowded, narrow gills and minute, amyloid spores, the latter visible only microscopically. In the field the crowding of the gills is the most useful clue, along with a slender stem whose base is clothed in fine white hairs and drawn out into a thin rooting strand that penetrates the cone scales.
Fruit bodies often appear in small groups from a single cone, which may be half-buried in litter so that the connection is not obvious until the mushroom is carefully lifted. Teasing the litter away to reveal the cone is the quickest way to confirm the identification.
How to identify it
Cap
Small, usually 1-3 cm across, convex becoming flattened and often with a low broad umbo, sometimes slightly depressed in age. The surface is smooth, hygrophanous, and dull cinnamon-buff to pale tan when moist, drying to a paler ochre or greyish buff. The margin is faintly translucent-striate when damp.
Gills
The defining feature: extremely crowded, very narrow, and adnexed to almost free, whitish to pale cream and never darkening. Even on a small cap the gill count is high, giving the underside a finely lined appearance.
Stipe
Slender and pliant, 2-5 cm tall and only 1-2 mm thick, pale buff above and darker brown below, covered towards the base with fine white downy hairs. The base tapers into a thin, tough rooting strand that runs into the cone.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thin, pale, and unremarkable. The spore print is white. Under a microscope the spores are minute and stain blue-grey in iodine, a technical character of the genus.
Where and when it grows
This fungus fruits from the fallen cones of spruce and pine, and occasionally from cones of fir and Douglas fir. The cones are usually lying on or just beneath the litter surface, sometimes wholly buried, and a single cone may support several fruit bodies emerging between the scales or from the cone axis.
It appears mainly in autumn and continues into early winter, often persisting after most woodland fungi have finished. The species is widespread across the conifer forests of Europe, northern Asia, and North America, and is also common in planted conifer stands, shelterbelts, and even ornamental spruces in parks.
Ecological role
Baeospora myosura is a saprotroph with a narrow substrate preference. Its mycelium colonises the tough, resinous tissue of shed conifer cones and slowly decomposes the scales and axis, a resource that few fungi are equipped to exploit. This specialisation lets it fruit at a time of year when competition for general litter is intense.
The rooting stem base is a strand of mycelium anchoring the fruit body to the cone below, which is why the mushrooms often seem to arise from bare litter until the cone is uncovered. Successive years of fruiting can occur from the same cone as decomposition proceeds.
Similar species
Strobilurus tenacellus and its relatives also grow on conifer cones but differ in season and structure: they fruit in late winter and spring, have much more widely spaced gills, and possess a long, smooth, yellow-brown rooting stem without the dense white basal hairs. Mycena species growing near cones have widely spaced gills, a fragile stem that snaps cleanly, and often a translucent, strongly striate cap.
Auriscalpium vulgare, the Earpick Fungus, occupies the same cones but bears spines rather than gills and has a lateral, densely hairy stem. Small litter Collybia and Gymnopus species may look similar from above but grow from leaf debris and twigs rather than cones and lack the extreme gill crowding.
