Copper Brittlegill Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for Russula decolorans, the copper-orange pinewood brittlegill whose whole fruit body greys and then blackens as it ages. Covers the brittle-flesh genus test, the greying reaction, and the yellow and red brittlegills it is mistaken for.

The Setting and the First Look

The Copper Brittlegill is a northern and upland mushroom, and the picture that goes with it is very consistent: a pine wood on thin acid sandy or peaty soil, a floor of bilberry, heather, feather moss and reindeer lichen, and a late-summer or autumn day after rain. Against that green and grey ground the caps show up as a warm, glowing orange - copper, brick, apricot-orange, sometimes with a rustier centre - and they usually stand singly or in loose scatters rather than in tight groups.

The build is unmistakably brittlegill: a thick, squat cap on a straight white cylindrical stem, with no ring and no veil of any kind, sitting flush with the moss. If you find the same colour on a slender stem carrying a cobweb veil, you are elsewhere.

Confirming the Genus Before Anything Else

Brittlegills have a texture no other agaric matches, and testing it takes two seconds. Snap the stipe sideways: it breaks with a clean, crisp fracture like a stick of chalk or a piece of apple, not a fibrous tear. Brush a fingernail across the gills: they shatter and crumble rather than bending. There is no latex - the milkcaps, which share the same brittle flesh, will bleed white or coloured liquid from a cut gill within seconds, and this species will not.

Also register what is absent. No ring, no cortina, no volva, no bulb. The stipe is cylindrical or slightly clavate and looks as though it was turned on a lathe.

Reading the Cap

A mature cap is 5 to 12 centimetres across, occasionally reaching 15. It passes from convex through flat to shallowly depressed at the centre, and old caps develop a broad saucer shape with a slightly wavy edge. The surface is smooth, dry to slightly greasy in wet weather, and matt to faintly shining. The margin stays even and smooth for a long time, only becoming faintly grooved or tuberculate-striate in the last stage of life.

Colour is the character the English name is built on, but it is also the character most likely to mislead, because it fades. Fresh caps are a saturated copper-orange, brick-orange or rusty apricot, occasionally with brownish or ochre patches. Sun and age wash them out towards ochre, straw or dull tan, and rain-soaked specimens can look almost brown. The cap skin peels for about a third to half the radius - a small but repeatable character in the genus.

Gills, Stipe and the Greying Reaction

Turn it over. The gills are adnexed to almost free, moderately spaced rather than crowded, fairly thick, and mostly of equal length with few short intermediates and only occasional forking near the stipe. Young gills are whitish to pale cream; as the spores ripen they warm to a definite pale ochre or buff-yellow, which is a useful advance signal of the spore colour.

Now the diagnostic step, and the reason to handle the mushroom firmly. Press a gill edge between finger and thumb, nick the stipe surface with a fingernail, and cut the whole fruit body in half from cap centre to stipe base. Then wait and watch. Within a few minutes the exposed white flesh takes on a dull grey cast; over ten to thirty minutes it deepens to slate or ash-grey; over some hours it goes on to a sooty charcoal or nearly black. The greying is uniform through cap flesh, stipe flesh and gills, and it does not pass through a red or pink intermediate.

That reaction makes old fruit bodies easy to pick out in the field: a specimen a few days old may have a still-orange cap sitting on a stipe that has turned uniformly ash-grey, or gills flushed grey between the copper cap and the pale foot. Learning to see that two-tone effect from standing height is a fast way to spot the species in a mixed pinewood.

The stipe itself is 4 to 10 centimetres tall and 1 to 2.5 centimetres thick, white, cylindrical or slightly swollen downwards, firm when young and becoming spongy and chambered inside with age - and, of course, greying wherever it is bruised or cut.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Brittlegill identification leans heavily on the exact tint of the print, so it is worth doing properly rather than glancing at a thin dusting. Cut the cap free of the stipe, lay it gills down on white paper or, better, on a glass slide or white tile, cover it with a bowl and leave it several hours or overnight. Then scrape the deposit together into a thick heap with a knife edge, because a thin scatter always reads paler than the truth.

Judged that way, the print of the Copper Brittlegill is a pale to medium ochre or cream-yellow - clearly yellower than white, but well short of the deep egg-yolk ochre of the darkest-spored brittlegills. In the standard brittlegill colour codes it sits in the mid-cream to light-ochre band.

Substrate, Partners and Season

This is a mycorrhizal species, partnered above all with pine, and to a lesser degree with spruce and birch in mixed northern stands. It wants acid, nutrient-poor ground: sandy pine heath, boreal taiga, upland pine plantation, the drier hummocks of sphagnum bogs, and mossy pinewood margins. It is common through Scandinavia, northern and montane Europe and boreal North America, and becomes scarce as you move into rich lowland broadleaf country.

Season runs from midsummer to the first frosts, with the main flush in late August, September and October. Fruit bodies are solitary or scattered, pushed up through moss and bilberry, and they often stand for a week or more, greying steadily the whole time.

Separating It From the Similar Brittlegills

Almost all the confusion in this group resolves with three facts: cap colour, partner tree, and whether the flesh greys.

Russula claroflava also greys and blackens exactly as this species does, so the reaction alone will not separate them. Its cap, however, is a clean chrome or lemon-yellow rather than copper-orange, and it partners birch in wet, boggy, often sphagnum-rich ground rather than pine on dry sandy heath.

Russula paludosa is the big handsome red-orange brittlegill of northern pine and spruce bogs, often with a paler ochre centre and a stipe frequently flushed pink. Its spore print is similarly ochre - but its flesh stays white and does not go grey, and it usually runs larger and more robust.

Russula vinosa, sometimes met under the name Russula obscura, greys and blackens strongly, but its cap is dark wine-red to purplish or vinaceous-brown, not copper-orange, and it is a spruce associate.

Russula xerampelina and its relatives discolour, but in a different direction: they brown rather than grey, particularly on the stipe, and they carry a strong crab-like odour that this species lacks.

Russula aurata and other orange-capped species show brighter yellow gill edges, or simply hold their colour without greying. Beyond the genus, an orange cap with tubes and pores underneath is a bolete such as a Leccinum, and an orange cap that bleeds when cut is a milkcap - both are settled by one look at the underside.

The Working Checklist

Brittle chalk-like snap, no latex, copper-orange fading cap, moderately spaced cream-to-ochre gills, white cylindrical stipe, everything greying then blackening on cut or bruise, ochre spore print, pine on acid mossy ground in late summer and autumn. Common questions

How long should I wait for the greying reaction before deciding?
Cut the fruit body in half lengthways and give it a proper interval. A dull grey cast normally appears within about five minutes, deepens to slate or ash-grey over ten to thirty minutes, and can reach sooty charcoal after some hours. Judging a fresh cut after ten seconds is the commonest mistake. It also helps to nick the stipe surface and squeeze a gill edge, then compare all three sites against an untouched part of the same mushroom.
How do I separate it from Russula claroflava, which greys in the same way?
