A slender funnel-shaped fungus with a scurfy brown cap, a bright orange-yellow hollow stalk and an almost smooth orange underside rather than distinct ridges.

Overview

Craterellus lutescens is the near-smooth counterpart of Yellowfoot. The two are close relatives that grow in similar damp mossy conifer woodland, and both build thin, pliant funnels on hollow yellow stalks — but where Yellowfoot carries obvious blunt grey ridges beneath the cap, this species reduces its fertile surface almost to a flat sheet marked only by low, shallow, blunt wrinkles, and washes it in warm orange rather than grey.

It sits in Craterellus, the genus that also contains the black trumpets, within the family Cantharellaceae. The family's defining feature — a spore-bearing surface built from folds rather than from thin plates — is well shown here in its most reduced form, midway between the ridged chanterelles and the almost featureless black trumpets.

It is largely a northern and montane fungus, associated with damp, mossy ground and often with calcareous soils, and like its relatives it fruits late and in great abundance.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 2–6 cm across, convex then depressed and finally funnel-shaped, often becoming perforated at the centre where it opens into the hollow stalk. The surface is dry and finely scurfy to fibrillose-scaly, coloured yellow-brown, orange-brown or dark brown, often with darker fibrils. The margin is thin, strongly wavy and lobed, inrolled when young and later irregularly flaring.

Gills

There are no true gills and barely any ridges. The fertile underside is nearly smooth or covered with low, blunt, shallow wrinkles and veins that fork weakly, running decurrently onto the stalk. Its colour is a warm orange to pinkish-orange or yellow-orange, brighter and more apricot-toned than the greyish underside of Yellowfoot.

Stipe

The stalk is 3–8 cm long and 3–10 mm thick, hollow, often flattened or grooved, and bright orange-yellow to golden yellow, sometimes paler at the base. It is smooth and slightly pliant.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin, pliant, yellowish to pale orange, unchanging when cut. The odour is fruity and pleasantly aromatic. The spore print is white to pale cream, sometimes with a faint pinkish tint.

Where and when it grows

This fungus grows in damp coniferous and mixed forest, especially in thick moss and Sphagnum, in wet hollows, along bog margins and on shaded slopes. It shows a preference for calcareous or base-rich ground, though it is also found on more acid soils where moisture is high, and it commonly fruits among the same moss carpets as its close relative Yellowfoot.

The season is autumn, extending into early winter after the first frosts. It is widespread in northern and montane Europe, particularly Scandinavia and the Alps, and is also reported from northern Asia and North America, with regional variation in how narrowly the name is applied.

Ecological role

Craterellus lutescens is ectomycorrhizal with conifers, principally spruce and pine, forming a fungal mantle over the tree's fine roots and an extensive network of hyphae through the moss layer and decaying organic matter. It gathers water and mineral nutrients from substrates that roots alone cannot exploit and trades them for photosynthetic carbon.

In cold, wet, moss-dominated forests where decomposition is slow, this kind of partnership is a principal route for nutrient transfer. The species' habit of fruiting in dense troops late in the season also makes it a substantial autumn resource for invertebrates and small forest mammals, which help disperse its spores.

Similar species

Craterellus tubaeformis is the closest match in size and habitat, but it has clearly developed blunt, forking gill-like ridges on the underside, coloured greyish to grey-lilac rather than warm orange. Craterellus ignicolor of eastern North America is similar in colour but has better-defined veining and a more orange cap. Craterellus cornucopioides shares the smooth fertile surface but is sooty grey-black throughout with no yellow stalk.

The Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) can look superficially similar in colour but is thick-fleshed, uniformly yellow-orange, with well-developed ridges and a solid rather than hollow stalk.
