Overview

The Crimson Waxcap is the heavyweight of the red waxcaps, regularly reaching 5–12 cm across and standing on a stout, fibrous stem that can be as thick as a finger. Where most waxcaps are small and easily overlooked in turf, this species is conspicuous — a broad, glossy, blood-red to blackcurrant-coloured cap sitting in short grass like a spilled drop of paint.

Hygrocybe is the classic grassland genus of the family Hygrophoraceae, defined by thick, widely spaced, waxy-textured gills and bright, often lurid colours. Waxcap assemblages are treated internationally as indicators of ancient, undisturbed, nutrient-poor grassland, and H. punicea is one of the flagship species of those communities: its presence usually signals turf that has escaped ploughing and fertiliser for many decades.

What makes it distinctive within the red group is the combination of size, the dry fibrillose stipe streaked red and yellow over a clean white base, and the way the cap fades from crimson through orange-red as it dries and expands into a broad bell.

How to identify it

Cap

Broadly conical at first, expanding to bell-shaped or irregularly umbonate, often with a lobed or wavy margin, 4–12 cm across. The surface is deep blood-red to crimson or wine-red, greasy to slightly viscid when moist and shining when dry, fading from the margin inwards to orange-red or tawny with age. Old caps frequently split radially at the edge.

Gills

Thick, waxy, broad and well spaced, adnexed to almost free with a slight notch. Colour begins pale yellow to orange-yellow and takes on reddish tints from the edge inwards, often blotched red where handled. The soft, slightly greasy feel of the gill face when rubbed is a hallmark of the genus.

Stipe

Stout, 5–12 cm tall and 1–2.5 cm thick, dry and conspicuously fibrous with longitudinal streaks of red, orange and yellow on a yellowish ground. The key detail is the base: it is abruptly white, without any red flushing, and the stem is usually hollow and often flattened or grooved. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is yellowish to reddish in the cap, whitish in the stem base, soft and fragile; it does not change colour appreciably when cut and does not blacken on bruising. The spore print is white, and spores are smooth and ellipsoid.

Where and when it grows

A grassland species, growing in short, closed, unimproved turf: old pastures, hay meadows, churchyards, cemetery lawns, coastal cliff-top grassland, dune slacks and long-established parkland. It favours soils low in nitrogen and phosphate and is largely absent from agriculturally improved or recently disturbed ground.

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, peaking in October in temperate Europe after the first cool, wet spells. The species is widespread across Europe, with records from North America and parts of Asia, though it has declined sharply in regions where old grassland has been fertilised, ploughed or built over, and it is treated as a conservation priority in several countries.

Ecological role

The precise nutritional strategy of grassland waxcaps has been debated for decades. They were long assumed to be simple saprotrophs of grassland litter, but isotope studies and the tight association of their mycelium with mosses and grass roots point instead to some form of biotrophic or root-associated relationship, possibly with bryophytes or with the grasses themselves. What is certain is that they are not wood decayers and cannot be cultivated on ordinary organic substrates.

The mycelium is long-lived and slow to establish, which is why waxcap-rich turf takes many decades to develop and does not recover quickly once disturbed. Fruiting is triggered by autumn rainfall following a warm summer, and a single site may produce fruit bodies from the same mycelial patch year after year in the same square metre of grass.

Similar species

Hygrocybe splendidissima is the closest match, but it is generally smaller, has a dry rather than greasy cap, a stem that is red or orange right down to the base rather than abruptly white, and gills that are more strongly decurrent. Hygrocybe coccinea, the Scarlet Waxcap, is much smaller with a smooth scarlet cap and a smooth, non-fibrillose stem coloured red almost throughout. Hygrocybe conica differs decisively by blackening where bruised and with age, which H. punicea never does.

Hygrocybe intermedia has a fibrillose, dry, orange-red cap that is markedly scurfy rather than greasy, and Hygrocybe miniata is a tiny species with a minutely scaly cap and decurrent gills. The reliable field combination for the Crimson Waxcap is large size, greasy blood-red cap, coarsely fibrous streaky stem, white stem base, and no blackening.
