Dark Honey Fungus Identification Guide
A field-by-field walkthrough of Armillaria ostoyae: the dark scaly cap, the collared cottony ring, the white spore print and the black bootlace rhizomorphs under conifer bark.
What you notice first
Most encounters with Armillaria ostoyae begin with a shape rather than a colour. You come round a spruce or pine and find a dense, shouldering cluster of stipes fused together at the bottom, erupting from the root collar of a living tree, from an old conifer stump, or apparently straight out of the needle litter above a buried root. A single clump may hold thirty or forty fruit bodies, the outer ones leaning outward so the group reads as a rough rosette. The overall tone is darker and more chocolate than the name Honey Fungus suggests: a warm bronze-brown that looks scurfy and unpolished from a metre away.
Before you touch anything, note the tree. This species leans strongly towards conifers, above all spruce, and the presence of a dying or recently dead conifer with resin bleeding at the base is part of the identification, not just scenery.
Reading the cap
Caps run roughly 4 to 15 cm across. They start convex, often with the margin rolled well under, then flatten out with a broad low umbo and finally spread, sometimes with a wavy or uplifted rim in old specimens. The ground colour is dark reddish-brown to date-brown, deepest over the disc and warming to tawny at the edge.
The ornament is what matters. Look for erect to slightly recurved, dark brown to almost blackish scales, densest and most crowded over the centre and thinning outwards so that the ground colour shows between them near the margin. These scales persist rather than washing away in rain, which is a genuinely useful character. The surface is dry, never slimy. In very wet weather the margin may become faintly lined, and there are often small whitish veil scraps hanging from the rim as a fringe.
Gills and their staining
Run a fingertip up under the cap. The gills are adnate to shortly and narrowly decurrent, running a short way down onto the stipe. They are crowded, moderately broad, with lamellulae of several lengths, and the edges are even.
Colour progression is diagnostic in combination with everything else: whitish to cream at first, ageing to a dirty cream, and then developing rusty to reddish-brown spotting and blotching, especially where the cluster crushes against itself and where you have handled them. The staining is patchy rather than a uniform darkening.
Stipe and the ring
Stipes measure roughly 6 to 15 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, longer and more slender on the crowded interior of a clump, often curved, and either tapering downwards or swollen where the bases fuse.
The ring is the ornament to look hardest at. In A. ostoyae it is thick, cottony to woolly, persistent, and white on the upper surface, but the outer edge and underside carry distinctly darker brown to blackish-brown scales or floccose patches. That dark-edged white collar is the single most quoted field character for the species. Above the ring the stipe is pale cream and finely fibrillose. Below it the stipe darkens progressively towards the base, ending brown to nearly black, with fine woolly bands and scurf. The stipe flesh is tough and stringy and tears lengthwise instead of snapping cleanly.
The base, and what lies under the bark
This is where the genus is confirmed. Lift the litter and peel a flap of loose bark from the host at or below ground level. You are looking for two things: flat white to cream mycelial sheets or fans spreading between bark and wood, and black shoelace-like rhizomorphs, round in section, one to three millimetres thick, black on the outside and white within, threading through the bark, the soil and the litter. In this species the rhizomorphs are notably robust. The decayed wood beneath is soft, pale and stringy, and infected conifers often show dark resin flows at the collar.
Flesh and colour change
Slice a fruit body top to bottom. The flesh is white to cream, thick and firm in the cap and tough and fibrous in the stipe. There is no dramatic reaction: at most a slow, dull brownish or pinkish-buff discolouration on the cut face and where bruised. No latex is exuded. The smell is strongly fungal, slightly sour, a little like a damp cellar, which is a supporting note rather than proof.
Taking a spore print
Cut a mature cap free, lay it gills down on paper that is half white and half dark, cover it with a cup or bowl to still the air, and leave it four to eight hours. The print is white to very pale cream.
In practice this genus makes the job easy: because it sheds spores heavily, the caps low in a cluster are usually already dusted white by their neighbours above, giving you a free print in the field. That white deposit carries a great deal of weight, because several superficially similar clustered wood-dwellers drop rusty-brown or purple-brown prints instead.
Substrate, season and range
Late summer into late autumn, peaking after the first cold nights, in northern temperate conifer forest across Europe, Asia and North America. The fungus behaves both as a parasite of living roots and as a saprotroph on dead stumps and buried roots, so fruit bodies appear at the root collar, on stumps, from wounds, and sometimes in apparently open ground where a root lies below. Single clones spread outward through the soil on rhizomorphs and can occupy enormous areas of forest over centuries, producing slowly expanding patches of dead and dying conifers.
Sorting it from the other Armillarias and their mimics
Armillaria mellea has a honey-yellow to tawny cap with sparse, fine, yellowish scales confined mostly to the disc and often washed off entirely; its ring is a soft white skirt with a yellowish fringe and no dark scaly edge, and it favours broadleaved trees.
Armillaria gallica is paler and more yellow-brown with fine scattered scales, has a markedly bulbous to club-shaped stipe base, and its veil leaves only a yellowish cobwebby zone rather than a firm collar. It usually appears in small groups or singly on hardwood.
Armillaria tabescens has no ring at all, and A. cepistipes is thinner-fleshed and paler with a swollen base and a flimsy ring.
Pholiota squarrosa also grows in big clusters at tree bases but is dry and shaggy with recurved scales on both cap and stipe, its gills mature rusty, and its spore print is brown. Hypholoma fasciculare is sulphur-yellow with greenish-tinged gills, lacks a ring, and prints purple-brown. Gymnopilus junonius is brighter orange-tawny with a rusty print. Kuehneromyces mutabilis and Galerina marginata are far smaller with smooth two-toned hygrophanous caps and brown prints.
