A globe-shaped orange ascomycete that erupts in clusters from woody galls on southern beech trees in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, its surface dimpled with honeycomb-like cups.
Overview
Darwin's Fungus is one of the most instantly recognisable fungi of the far southern hemisphere: a soft, spherical to slightly flattened body roughly the size of a golf ball, pale cream to bright orange, and covered in shallow rounded pits that make it look like a tiny honeycomb or a golf ball. It grows in dense clusters, sometimes dozens at a time, on swollen woody galls that stud the branches of southern beech trees.
The species belongs to Cyttaria, a small genus that forms its own order (Cyttariales) within the sac fungi. Rather than producing gills or pores, each pit on the surface is an apothecium — a miniature cup lined with spore-bearing asci. The genus is confined almost entirely to the Nothofagus forests of southern South America, New Zealand and Australia, a distribution that mirrors the ancient breakup of Gondwana and makes the genus a favourite example in biogeography.
It carries Charles Darwin's name because he collected and described the clusters during the Beagle voyage, noting how abundantly they hung from the beeches of Tierra del Fuego. The combination of host tree, gall, and pitted orange globe makes the fungus essentially unmistakable within its range.
How to identify it
Fruiting body
The fruiting body (a stroma) is globose to pear-shaped, typically 2–5 cm across, attached by a short narrow base. When young it is enclosed in a smooth whitish membrane; as it matures the membrane ruptures and shrivels, exposing the pitted surface beneath. Colour ranges from creamy white and pale yellow through to a vivid apricot or deep orange as spores mature.
Surface and fertile pits
The defining feature is the surface: 20–60 shallow, roughly circular depressions arranged over the upper and outer faces, each one a separate cup-shaped apothecium. Between the pits the tissue is smooth and slightly waxy. Older specimens collapse and darken, losing turgidity and becoming wrinkled and brownish.
Flesh and spores
The interior is gelatinous to spongy, pale, translucent and moist, with a slightly rubbery consistency. Sectioning shows a firm outer rind and a softer, chambered core. Spores are produced in asci lining the pits, released as a pale to white deposit; they are smooth, globose to broadly ellipsoid, and hyaline under the microscope. There is no stipe, ring, volva or gill structure of any kind.
Where and when it grows
Darwin's Fungus is found only where southern beeches grow, principally Nothofagus antarctica, N. pumilio and N. betuloides in Chile and Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego and the Patagonian Andes. The fungus induces conspicuous woody swellings — galls — on branches and twigs, and it is from these perennial galls that the fruiting bodies burst, often in tight bunches along a single limb.
Fruiting is strongly seasonal, concentrated in the southern spring and early summer (roughly October to January), when clusters can be abundant enough to make whole branches look laden with orange beads. Outside the fruiting window the galls persist as bare knobbly wood, and closely related Cyttaria species replace it on beeches in New Zealand and southeastern Australia.
Ecological role
The fungus is a biotrophic parasite of living southern beech. Its mycelium colonises the cambium and stimulates the host to produce the characteristic woody gall, a permanent structure that swells year on year and from which fresh fruiting bodies emerge each season. Heavily galled trees can carry hundreds of infection points, giving the branches a knotted, contorted appearance.
Spores released from the surface pits are dispersed by wind and rain and by the many insects, birds and small mammals attracted to the soft fruiting bodies, which are a conspicuous seasonal presence in the Patagonian forest ecosystem. Because the fungus depends absolutely on Nothofagus, its range contracts and expands with that of its host, and the genus as a whole is a textbook Gondwanan relict.
Similar species
Within its range the main confusion is with other Cyttaria species. Cyttaria hariotii forms smaller, paler, more numerous globes clustered on much finer twigs and tends to have shallower, less regular pits. Cyttaria espinosae is larger, deeper orange and more coarsely pitted, growing chiefly on Nothofagus obliqua. Australasian relatives such as Cyttaria gunnii occur only on their own local beech hosts, so geography plus host tree separates them.
At a glance a cluster can suggest orange jelly fungi or slime moulds on beech bark, but those lack the regular honeycomb pitting and the firm gelatinous rind, and never arise from a persistent woody gall. Puffballs are superficially spherical but grow from soil or dead wood, have a smooth or spiny skin without cups, and release powdery spores from a single apical pore.
