Dead Man's Foot Identification Guide

The habitat is half the identification

Dead Man's Foot is a fungus of hard ground. Look on bare sand, gravel, roadside cuttings, quarry edges, industrial spoil, track margins, dune systems and the thin poor soil of young pine or eucalypt plantations. It thrives where almost nothing else fruits: compacted, dry, nutrient-poor, sun-baked substrate, often cracked and crusted at the surface.

Fruiting comes in summer and autumn, frequently after rain following a dry spell, and specimens often stand for weeks because they are tough and slow to decay.

First impression

What you see is a lumpy brown-to-black object half-buried in gravel, looking uncannily like a partly exhumed potato, a boot heel or an old leather bag. It has no cap, no gills and no obvious stalk from above, and the soil around it is often heaved and cracked where it pushed through.

Mature specimens are surrounded by a dusty stain of brown spore powder blown down from the crumbling top, and touching one leaves the fingers ochre-yellow.

Overall form

Size is variable and can be impressive: five to twenty centimetres tall and four to fifteen centimetres wide, occasionally larger. The shape is club-shaped, pear-shaped or top-shaped, often irregular and knobbled, with the swollen head above and a tapering pseudostipe below that continues deep into the substrate. That buried portion is easy to underestimate, and it is frequently as long as the visible part, so excavate carefully rather than pulling.

The outer skin

The peridium is thin, smooth to slightly roughened, and ranges from ochre-brown and olive-brown through to blackish. When young and wet it can look faintly varnished; it dulls with age. It is fragile, and as the fungus matures it flakes and erodes away from the top downwards, so the fruit body appears to disintegrate progressively from the crown, leaving a ragged cup of dark spore mass sitting in the remains of the wall.

The interior is not a uniform mass. It is packed with thousands of small chambers called peridioles, each one a discrete pea or lentil-shaped packet one to four millimetres across with its own thin wall, set in a dark gelatinous matrix. They are arranged in a dense mosaic, and because ripening proceeds from the top downwards, a single specimen displays an entire colour sequence on one cut face: black powdery spore dust at the crown where the peridioles have already broken down, olive-brown and then orange peridioles below that, bright yellow ones further down, and pale whitish immature ones near the base.

Beneath that fertile zone lies a sterile base with a coarse, marbled or chambered texture and no peridioles at all.

That vertical gradient plus discrete peridioles is the single conclusive character for the species. No puffball and no earthball shows it.

The base and the rhizomorphs

Dig out the pseudostipe and rinse it. It narrows downwards and merges into a dense mat of bright yellow to ochre-yellow rhizomorphs that bind sand grains into a solid clump around the base. These yellow cords can extend a surprising distance through the substrate and are a strong supporting character, since the earthballs it might be confused with have white or pale cords at best.

Spores

A conventional spore print is neither necessary nor practical. Instead, hold a mature specimen over white paper and tap the crumbling top: a cloud of powder falls, cinnamon to golden-brown at first and darkening to deep brown as the fruit body ages. The powder is extremely fine and drifts easily, and it stains skin and paper a persistent yellow-brown. Under a lens the spores are globose and covered in coarse spines and warts, but you will not need microscopy to name this one.

Ecology

Pisolithus arhizus is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheathing partnerships with tree roots, and it has an unusually broad host range for such a fungus: pines and other conifers, eucalypts, acacias, oaks and birches all serve. Its tolerance of poor, dry, disturbed and metal-rich substrates makes it a pioneer of ground that is otherwise hostile to tree establishment, and it is widely used as an inoculant for nursery seedlings destined for reclaimed land. Finding it is a reliable sign that some ectomycorrhizal tree is rooting nearby, even if the nearest sapling looks too small or too far away.

Globally the name covers a species complex, and regional segregates such as the paler Australian species differ in peridiole size and colour while sharing the same architecture.

Separating it from look-alikes

Earthballs, Scleroderma citrinum and relatives, are the commonest confusion. They are more regularly globose with only a rudimentary rooting base, their rind is thick, tough and coarsely warted or scaly, usually pale ochre-yellow, and the interior is a single uniform mass that ripens purplish-black to black, often marbled with white veins when young. There are no peridioles, no jelly matrix and no vertical ripening gradient. Cutting one open settles the question instantly.

True puffballs such as Lycoperdon and Calvatia have a white, uniform, marshmallow-textured interior when young that ripens evenly to olive or brown throughout, with no discrete packets, and they open by a defined apical pore or by peeling away in sheets rather than eroding from the crown.

Astraeus and the earthstars split their outer wall into a star of rays around a central spore sac, a structure impossible to mistake once seen.

Bird's nest fungi also contain peridioles, but they are tiny cups a few millimetres across holding a handful of large flattened packets, often tethered by a cord.

False truffles such as Rhizopogon are fully underground, chambered rather than powdery, and lack both the club shape and the spore dust.
