A hypogeous ascomycete of arid steppe that forms pale, smooth-skinned tubers among sun-rose plants, with a reddish-brown gleba veined in white.

Overview

Desert Truffle is the general name for hypogeous fungi of the genera Terfezia, Tirmania and their relatives in the family Pezizaceae, of which Terfezia claveryi is one of the most widespread. Like other desert truffles it is a cup fungus that has become subterranean, enclosing its fertile tissue inside a solid body instead of exposing it on an open disc.

The fungus is a creature of semi-arid and arid landscapes around the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and into central and southwest Asia. Bodies swell just below the surface, cracking and doming the crusted soil above them, and the resulting fissures are the traditional way of finding them.

What makes the group ecologically remarkable is its host: rather than partnering with trees, these fungi form mycorrhizas with small shrubby sun-roses in the family Cistaceae, allowing them to thrive in steppe country where no forest exists.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

Irregularly globose to ovoid or lumpy, generally 3-10 cm across, sometimes reaching the size of a fist. The peridium is thin, smooth to slightly felted or finely cracked, and coloured whitish, pale ochre, sandy buff or light brown, often stained darker where soil adheres. There are no pyramidal warts.

Interior (gleba)

White and firm when immature, ripening to reddish brown, cinnamon or purplish brown. Pale, whitish sterile veins wind through the fertile tissue, producing a marbled pattern that is coarser and less densely branched than in Tuber. The cut surface is solid and even.

Base

There is usually a small pale basal pad or attachment scar where mycelial strands connected the body to the soil, but no stipe.

Spores

Asci are globose to broadly clavate and contain eight spores. The spores themselves are globose, hyaline to pale yellowish, and ornamented with conical spines or blunt warts. As with all hypogeous species, no spore print is obtainable and microscopy of the gleba is the standard confirmation.

Where and when it grows

Terfezia claveryi occurs in open, calcareous or gypseous steppe, semi-desert scrub, degraded rangeland and sandy plains, always in the immediate vicinity of its host plants — small woody sun-roses of the genus Helianthemum and related Cistaceae. It grows within the top few centimetres of soil and often forms clusters around a single host plant.

The distribution spans Spain, North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula and parts of central Asia. Fruiting follows the winter rainy season, with bodies maturing through spring; abundance swings dramatically from year to year according to the timing and quantity of autumn and winter rainfall.

Ecological role

The species forms mycorrhizas with Helianthemum and allied Cistaceae, wrapping and in some cases penetrating the fine roots of these low shrubs. The association is essential in arid ground: the fungal network expands the plant's reach for water and phosphorus in soils that dry rapidly and hold few nutrients, while the plant supplies carbon. Host plants growing with the fungus are typically more drought-resilient than uncolonised neighbours.

Because the body never opens, dispersal depends on animals — rodents, hares, foxes, birds and grazing livestock break open ripe bodies, spreading the tough ornamented spores. The spores are highly resistant to heat and desiccation, an adaptation that lets the fungus persist through years in which no rain arrives to trigger fruiting.

Similar species

Tirmania nivea and Tirmania pinoyi share the habitat and general shape but are whiter overall, with a paler, less strongly coloured gleba and finer, more numerous white veins. Other Terfezia species, including T. arenaria and T. boudieri, differ in gleba tone and, microscopically, in the shape and length of the spore spines.

Kalaharituber pfeilii of southern Africa is a close ecological parallel but partners with dune grasses and has a browner, more olive gleba. True Tuber truffles are separated by a warted or velvety skin, a dense fine white vein network and asci with only one to four ellipsoid spores. Immature Scleroderma earthballs found in sandy ground can be excluded by their tough yellowish scaly rind and gleba that darkens to a powdery black-purple with no marbled veining.
