Devil's Bolete Identification Guide

How to work through Rubroboletus satanas in the field: a squat, pale-capped bolete with red pores and a fat netted stem on warm chalk soils, and how its blue-staining flesh and reticulation separate it from every other red-pored bolete.

First Impressions

Rubroboletus satanas is a bolete you notice from several metres away, mostly because of its bulk. It sits low in the leaf litter of a warm broadleaf wood — typically beech, oak or lime on chalk or limestone — looking like a pale bread roll pushed onto a swollen red-and-yellow barrel. Mature specimens can be enormous, with caps over 25 cm across and stems as thick as a wrist.

The colour combination is the hook: a pale, almost colourless cap above a vividly red pore surface. Most large boletes with red pores have a brown, olive or dark cap; a whitish-grey cap over red pores is unusual enough to send you straight into a careful examination.

It is a thermophilic species, so the setting matters as much as the mushroom. Think south-facing woodland banks, calcareous soil, warm summers, southern and central Europe and comparable warm-temperate zones.

Reading the Cap

The cap runs 8–30 cm, occasionally more. It starts strongly domed, almost hemispherical, and flattens slowly, often keeping a thick incurved margin well into maturity.

The surface is dry and matt, finely felted rather than smooth or greasy, and it becomes slightly uneven or lumpy with age. The colour is a dirty whitish, chalk-grey or pale buff, sometimes with an olive tinge across the disc and, in some collections, a faint pinkish blush toward the margin. In old, weathered caps the surface can crack into shallow patches.

Press a thumb into the cap edge: it may darken slowly and faintly blue-grey, but the reaction is nothing like the instant navy flush of some relatives.

The Pore Surface

Turn the mushroom over — and this is where you either confirm or reject it.

  • Pore mouths: blood-red, carmine or orange-red across most of the surface. In young specimens the outermost band near the margin may still be yellow or orange, deepening to red inwards; in very old caps the red fades to a dull orange-brown.
  • Tubes behind the pores: yellow to olive-yellow, and they should be cleanly separable from the cap flesh with a knife tip — slide the blade in horizontally and the tube layer peels away as a mat.
  • Depth: 1–2 cm on a large cap; the tubes are free to slightly depressed around the stem apex.
  • Bruising: press the pores firmly. They blue, but often only moderately and sometimes slowly, going a greenish-blue rather than an inky black-blue.

Note the contrast between yellow tube flesh and red pore mouths — slicing vertically through the tube layer shows this two-tone structure clearly and is a useful thing to photograph.

The Stipe

The stem is the second half of the identification and it is unmistakable in a good specimen.

It is short relative to the cap (6–15 cm) and obese — barrel-shaped, turnip-shaped or nearly spherical when young, frequently as wide as it is tall, and often broadest below the middle. The ground colour is yellow at the very apex, grading through orange to carmine or beetroot red across the middle and lower parts, sometimes paling again at the extreme base.

Over this ground runs a fine, dense, raised network — a reticulum. On this species the mesh is fine-meshed, tight, and typically red on a yellow-to-red ground, strongest in the upper half. Get a hand lens on it. Distinguishing a true raised net from a scattering of dots or granules is the single most valuable skill for red-pored boletes.

There is no ring, no volva and no rooting taproot; the base is simply a rounded swelling that sits in the soil.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut the whole mushroom vertically from cap centre to stem base in one clean stroke and watch for thirty seconds.

The flesh is thick, firm and whitish to pale lemon-yellow, more yellow toward the tube layer and often flushed red in the stem base. On exposure it turns pale blue — usually a soft, patchy, sky-blue or greenish-blue that develops over several seconds and then fades back to dull cream or grey within minutes. Mature specimens often stain only weakly, and the stem base may barely react at all.

Old material develops a strong, unpleasant smell, sour and carrion-like, that becomes obvious once the mushroom is in a basket. Young specimens smell faintly fruity or of nothing much.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the cap free of the stem and lay it pore-side-down on white paper or foil, covered with a bowl. Boletes drop generously but slowly, so allow six to twelve hours; a thick cap holds a lot of moisture and a shallow slice off the top of the cap speeds evaporation and helps the deposit form.

The print is olive-brown to dull olive-ochre, the standard colour for the group. A pink, rust or white print rules the species out immediately and points to entirely different genera.

Habitat, Season and Ecology

This is a strictly mycorrhizal species, living in partnership with the roots of broadleaf trees — beech, oak, hornbeam, lime and sweet chestnut are the usual hosts. It has a strong preference for calcareous soils: chalk downland woods, limestone escarpments, thin alkaline soils over rock.

It is also strongly warmth-loving, fruiting in high summer into early autumn, often earlier than the main bolete season, and typically in sun-warmed woodland edges, clearings and open glades rather than in deep shade. It is uncommon to rare across much of its range and often reappears in the same spot year after year, since the underlying mycelium is perennial and tied to a specific host tree.

Separating It From the Look-Alikes

Work by three characters: cap colour, stem ornament (net versus dots), and intensity of blueing.

Suillellus luridus. Also red-pored with a netted stem, but the cap is tan, olive-brown or ochre-brown, never chalky white; the reticulum is coarse and elongated rather than fine; the flesh blues instantly and strongly; and a vertical cut shows a thin red line immediately above the tubes.

Neoboletus luridiformis. Dark chestnut to blackish-brown velvety cap, deep red pores, and a stem covered in fine red dots and granules, with no network at all. The flesh turns near-black-blue in a second or two.

Rubroboletus legaliae. The closest genuine confusion: similar squat build and netted red stem, but the cap carries a distinct rose or salmon-pink flush instead of chalk-grey, and blueing is generally stronger.

Rubroboletus rhodoxanthus. Pinkish cap, brilliant chrome-yellow flesh in the stem, and blueing largely confined to the cap flesh.

Rubroboletus pulchrotinctus. Pale cap like satanas but with a pinkish marginal zone and paler, more orange pores.

Boletus edulis group. Frequently confused by beginners on stature alone, but the cap is brown, the pore surface is white then yellow-olive, there is never any red, and the net on the stem is white on a pale ground.

Caloboletus radicans. Whitish cap and a chunky stem, but the pores are lemon-yellow rather than red, the flesh blues strongly, and the stem base is rooting.

Common questions

How do I tell a netted stem from a dotted one?
Use a hand lens and side lighting. A reticulum is a continuous raised mesh of ridges that you can feel as a texture with a fingernail, whereas dots are discrete granules or scurfy points separated by smooth surface. Devil's bolete has a fine, tight red net over the upper stem; Neoboletus luridiformis has dots only.
Does the flesh always turn blue when cut?
It usually turns a soft, patchy pale blue or greenish-blue within seconds, then fades toward dull grey-cream. The reaction is often weak, especially in old or sun-dried specimens and in the stem base, so a faint change should not be taken as evidence against the species when cap colour, red pores and a fine red net all agree.
What kind of ground and trees should I be searching?
Warm, open broadleaf woodland on chalk or limestone, particularly with beech, oak, lime, hornbeam or sweet chestnut. It favours sun-exposed glades, banks and woodland edges in warm-temperate regions, and it fruits from high summer into early autumn, often before the main flush of other boletes.
Is it a decomposer or a tree partner?
It is ectomycorrhizal, wrapping the fine root tips of its host trees in a fungal sheath and exchanging soil water and minerals for sugars from the tree. Because the mycelium is perennial and tied to particular trees, fruiting bodies tend to reappear at the same spot in successive warm summers.
