Dingy Twiglet Identification Guide
A practical route through one of the most easily overlooked little brown mushrooms: how the velvety olive cap, white-fringed gill edges and dead hardwood twig habitat pin down Simocybe centunculus.
First Impressions
The dingy twiglet is a genuine "little brown mushroom", and the honest first impression is that it barely registers. You find it while kneeling to look at something else — turning over a fallen hazel branch, examining a dead beech twig hung up in the understorey, or working through a damp shaded corner of broadleaf woodland after autumn rain.
What eventually catches the eye is the texture and the tone. This is not a shiny brown mushroom. The cap is a dull, matt olive-brown or date-brown with a fine bloom, so it looks slightly dusty or suede-like, and it sits flat against dark wet bark rather than standing out from it. Caps are small — rarely more than 3 cm — and appear singly, in pairs or in small scattered groups along a branch rather than in dense tufts.
Because so many small brown fungi look alike at arm's length, the identification is entirely a close-range exercise. Take the whole branch section home if you can, or at least collect several fruiting bodies of different ages.
Reading the Cap
Measure it: 1–3 cm, occasionally slightly more. The shape starts hemispherical or convex and expands to broadly convex or nearly flat, sometimes with a shallow depression or slight central hump.
Colour is the classic sticking point. Fresh and damp, the cap is olive-brown, dark tan or a muddy date-brown; as it dries it fades hygrophanously from the margin inwards to a paler ochre or clay-buff, so a single troop can show two or three apparent "species". Always describe both states.
Now use a lens. The surface is finely pruinose or minutely velvety — covered with a fine bloom that is easy to rub off with a fingertip, revealing a smoother, darker surface beneath. The disc is often minutely wrinkled or veined (rugulose), particularly in mature caps. The margin is usually even, sometimes faintly translucent-striate when saturated, and there are no veil fragments, scales or fibrils hanging from it. That absence matters for one of the main look-alikes.
Gills
The gills are broadly adnate, often with a small tooth running a short way down the stipe. They are moderately broad and fairly well spaced — not crowded — with two or three tiers of shorter gills between them.
Their colour starts pale clay or olive-buff and darkens with maturity toward ochre-brown or dull cinnamon-brown, always retaining a slightly olive or dingy cast rather than becoming bright rust.
Then look at the gill edge under a lens, ideally with the gills lit from the side. In Simocybe the edge appears finely white-fringed or frosted, distinctly paler than the gill face. That whitish fringe is a mass of sterile cells and it is one of the most useful field-visible characters in the genus. If the edge is concolorous with the face, question the identification.
Stipe and Base
The stipe is 2–4 cm long and only 1–3 mm thick — slender, often curved or slightly off-centre because the mushroom grows sideways out of a branch. Colour is close to the cap or a little paler, olive-brown to grey-brown, darkening downwards.
Run a lens up the stipe. It is pruinose, most obviously in the upper part, with the same fine bloom as the cap; toward the base it becomes smoother and often carries a small tuft of white mycelial down where it meets the wood. There is no ring and no ring zone, which rules out a whole set of veiled brown species.
The stipe is stuffed at first and quickly hollow. It is fragile but not brittle-crumbly; it bends and then tears rather than snapping cleanly like chalk.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the mushroom lengthwise. The flesh is very thin — barely a millimetre over the gills — watery olive-brown in the cap, darker in the stipe. There is no colour change on cutting or bruising, no latex, and no strong smell; at most a faint, slightly earthy or mealy odour when a mass of caps is enclosed in a box.
The absence of any reaction is a real character here, since several confusable small woodland species bruise reddish, blacken, or exude a milky fluid.
Taking a Spore Print
Small fragile caps dry out before they drop, so treat this carefully.
- Choose a fully expanded cap with dark mature gills.
- Snip the stipe off flush and set the cap gill-side-down on white paper or a glass slide; the print is pale enough that a black background hides it.
- Cover with a small jar or upturned glass, adding a drop of water on the paper beside the cap to keep the air humid.
- Leave three to eight hours, or overnight.
The deposit is ochre-brown with an olive or clay cast — warmer than a Psathyrella print, duller and less orange than a Gymnopilus or Galerina rust-brown. Smear the print with a fingertip to judge the colour of a thick layer rather than a scatter of grains.
Under a microscope, the spores are smooth, ellipsoid to slightly bean-shaped, and bear a small germ pore; the pileipellis and gill edge are packed with distinctive sterile cells. Micro work is what settles species within Simocybe.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Simocybe centunculus is a wood-decay saprotroph. It fruits on dead deciduous wood: fallen and still-attached branches, twigs, small logs and occasionally worked timber, most often beech, oak, hazel, elm, ash and willow. It favours pieces that still have bark and are in the earlier-to-middle stages of decay, lying in shade where they stay damp.
You will not find it on conifer wood as a rule, nor on soil, dung or leaf litter, and it is not associated with tree roots as a mycorrhizal partner.
Season runs from summer through late autumn, peaking in mild wet spells. Ecologically it belongs to the community that softens twiggy hardwood debris on the woodland floor, contributing to the white rot that recycles branch wood back into soil.
Separating It From the Look-Alikes
Tubaria furfuracea. Similar size and similar dull brown tone, but the cap is warmer cinnamon or rusty-tan, the margin carries whitish veil scurf, the gills are more distinctly decurrent, and it usually grows on wood chips, mulch and soil rather than on branches. Its spore print is a plainer ochre without the olive cast.
Crepidotus species. Grow on the same twigs and share a brown print, but they are stalkless or have only a rudimentary lateral stub, and the cap is shell- or fan-shaped, attached sideways to the wood.
Psathyrella species. Often equally small and brown on woody debris, but the stipe is white, brittle and snaps cleanly, and the spore print is dark purple-brown to almost black.
Gymnopilus penetrans and relatives. Brighter tawny-yellow to rust, gills becoming bright rusty and often spotted, spore print vivid rust-orange, and typically on conifer wood.
Galerina and Conocybe. More conical or bell-shaped caps, smooth not pruinose surfaces, more strongly striate margins, and warmer rust-cinnamon prints.
Pluteus species on wood. Superficially similar brown caps, but the gills are free and turn pink, with a pink spore print.
Other Simocybe. S. sumptuosa is larger and darker with a more velvety cap on bigger logs; the very smallest twig species need microscopy. If you want a species-level name with confidence, keep the collection and measure the spores.
