A stinkhorn of sand dunes and light soils, rising from a distinctly violet to pinkish-lilac egg on pink cords. The white stalk carries a pitted, honeycombed head coated in olive spore slime.

Overview

Phallus hadriani is the sand-dune counterpart of the common stinkhorn. It emerges from an egg buried in loose sand, and its most reliable field character is the colour of that egg: pinkish-lilac, violet or rose-purple rather than plain white, with rhizomorph cords at the base that share the same pink tint.

The genus Phallus belongs to the Phallaceae in the order Phallales. All members share the same developmental sequence — a gelatinous egg containing the compressed fruiting body, followed by a rapid expansion in which a hollow, spongy, chambered stalk elongates within hours and lifts a spore-bearing head into the air. The head is coated in a dark, sticky gleba that carries the spores.

What makes P. hadriani distinctive is the union of that violet egg colour with a strictly sandy habitat. It is a characteristic fungus of coastal dune systems, often fruiting among marram grass or in the shelter of dune scrub, and it also appears inland on sandy soils, dunes stabilised by planting, and sandy garden beds.

How to identify it

Egg stage

A partly buried, ovoid to nearly round egg 3–6 cm across, with a tough outer skin that is white flushed pink, lilac, rose or violet, at least in patches. Thick white to pinkish rhizomorph cords run from the base into the sand. Cut vertically, the egg shows a gelatinous layer surrounding the compressed young stalk and the dark olive gleba over the folded head.

Stalk

On expansion the stipe reaches 10–20 cm tall and 2–4 cm thick, white, hollow, cylindrical and tapering slightly at both ends, with a spongy, pitted, chambered wall that crushes easily. At the base sits the remnant of the egg as a loose, sac-like volva, again often tinted pink or lilac.

Head

The head is thimble- to bell-shaped, 3–5 cm tall, with a surface raised into a coarse network of ridges enclosing pits, like a honeycomb. Freshly expanded it is entirely covered with a dark olive to olive-brown slimy gleba; where this is removed the pale ridged network shows through. The apex bears a small white perforated disc.

Spores

Spores are produced in the gleba slime rather than released as a dry print. They are small, smooth, ellipsoid and pale, and the mass appears olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

This species is closely tied to sand. Its classic habitat is coastal dune systems, where it fruits among marram and other dune grasses, in dune slacks and beside creeping willow or sea buckthorn scrub. It also occurs inland on sandy heaths, sandy arable margins, sandpits, and light sandy garden soil, occasionally in mulched beds over sand.

Because the eggs develop buried, the first sign is often a cracked patch of sand or a single expanded fruiting body standing above the surface. The species is widespread in Europe and is recorded from North America, North Africa and parts of Asia, generally where suitable sandy substrates occur. Fruiting runs from summer into autumn, peaking after rain in warm weather, when a whole colony can expand within a day.

Ecological role

Phallus hadriani is a saprotroph, its mycelium spreading through buried plant remains, roots and organic matter in sandy ground and knitting sand grains together with pale cords. In dune systems it forms part of the decomposer community that recycles grass litter and buried woody fragments in an otherwise nutrient-poor substrate.

Spore dispersal is by insects rather than wind. The mature gleba emits a powerful, penetrating odour that draws flies and beetles from a considerable distance. They land on the slimy head, feed on the gleba and become smeared with spores, which are then carried away on their bodies or pass through the gut and are deposited elsewhere. A head can be stripped clean within hours on a warm day, leaving the bare white pitted network standing on its stalk.

Similar species

Phallus impudicus, the common stinkhorn, is the closest match and shares the honeycombed head and white spongy stalk. The separation lies in the egg and volva, which in P. impudicus are white to off-white or faintly buff with white cords, never distinctly violet or rose, and in habitat: P. impudicus favours woodland and gardens with buried wood, while P. hadriani is a sand specialist.

Phallus ravenelii has a nearly smooth to finely granular head rather than a deeply pitted network, with a more prominent apical disc. Mutinus caninus and its relatives lack a separate cap altogether — the gleba coats the tapering upper part of the slender orange stalk directly — and their fruiting bodies are much smaller and narrower. Unopened eggs may also suggest puffballs, but cutting one lengthwise reveals the layered stinkhorn structure with its dark gleba and folded stalk.
