A thimble-capped spring ascomycete whose longitudinally wrinkled, tan to yellow-brown cap hangs free from the very top of the stalk like a bell. The stalk is stuffed with loose cottony pith rather than being hollow.

Overview

Verpa bohemica is the best known member of Verpa, a small genus in the Morchellaceae closely allied to the true morels. Where a morel's cap is fused to the stalk along its rim, a Verpa cap is attached only at the apex, so the entire skirt hangs free and can be lifted like a thimble off a finger, which is where the genus gets its English name.

This species is one of the earliest large fungi of the northern spring, often pushing up through cold, wet riparian soil weeks before the first true morels appear. That timing, plus its distinctive brain-like longitudinal wrinkles, makes it a familiar marker of the turning season across the temperate northern hemisphere.

Verpa bohemica also has one of the most remarkable microscopic characters in the Pezizales. Its asci contain only two spores each instead of the usual eight, and those spores are enormous, commonly 60-80 micrometres long, so a single glance down a microscope confirms the identification beyond doubt.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is thimble- to bell-shaped, 2-5 cm tall and about as wide, pale tan, yellow-brown, olive-brown or warm ochre-brown, darkening with age. Its surface is thrown into longitudinal wrinkles and blunt ribs that branch and rejoin, producing a folded, brain-like or convoluted texture rather than the sharply defined pits and ridges of a true morel. The cap is joined to the stalk only at the very apex; the entire lower margin hangs free, is often wavy or split, and swings loose if the fungus is tilted.

Stipe

The stalk is 5-12 cm long, cylindrical or tapering slightly upward, white to cream or pale buff, and covered in fine mealy granules that may be arranged in faint bands. Its interior is not an empty tube: it is loosely stuffed with soft, cottony white pith, which may partly break down in old specimens to leave irregular cavities but rarely produces the clean single chamber of a morel.

Flesh & spore deposit

The flesh is thin, brittle and pale, without notable colour change on cutting. A spore deposit is pale yellow to cream. Microscopically the two-spored asci and very large elliptical spores are diagnostic.

Where and when it grows

This species is strongly tied to moist bottomland and riparian woodland. It fruits on soil and leaf litter under cottonwood, aspen, poplar, willow, alder, elm and ash, typically on river flats, stream terraces, old floodplains and damp ditch banks. It also appears in orchards and along irrigation channels, and can fruit in large scattered troops of dozens or hundreds where conditions suit.

It is among the first substantial spring fungi, emerging in early spring as soils thaw, often while nights are still frosty and well before the local morel season. Fruiting is short-lived, with specimens collapsing quickly in warm weather. The species is widespread across northern and montane North America and much of Europe and northern Asia.

Ecological role

Verpa bohemica is generally regarded as a saprotroph, decomposing leaf litter, fine woody debris and root remains in the constantly renewed organic soils of floodplains, though a loose association with the roots of cottonwood and aspen has been suggested by its close and repeated tie to those trees.

Spores form in asci lining the outer, wrinkled surface of the cap and are shot into the air; the small number of very large spores per ascus is an unusual strategy, trading spore quantity for spore size and stored reserves. Fruiting so early in the season lets the fungus exploit soil moisture from snowmelt and spring rain before competitors are active and before the tree canopy closes and dries the ground. In riparian forest it contributes to the rapid turnover of the annual litter layer.

Similar species

Verpa conica shares the apex-attached hanging cap and pithy stalk but has a nearly smooth to only faintly wrinkled bell-shaped cap without the strong branching ribs, and it usually fruits slightly later and in drier, more scrubby habitats.

Morchella punctipes, the half-free morel, is the classic confusion: its cap is genuinely pitted with a ridge network, is attached around its middle rather than only at the apex so only the lower half hangs free, and its stalk is cleanly hollow rather than pith-filled. True morels of both the black and yellow groups have caps fused all the way to the rim and a single continuous hollow chamber. Gyromitra species have irregularly lobed or brain-like caps with folds fused to the stalk in places and stout chambered stalks, and never present a free-hanging thimble.
