A slim, graceful saddle fungus with a buff to greyish two-lobed head balanced on a thin, perfectly smooth stalk. The absence of ribs or flutes on the stem is its most useful distinguishing feature.

Overview

The Elastic Saddle is one of the slenderest members of Helvella, a genus of stalked ascomycetes in the family Helvellaceae. Where several relatives build heavy, deeply sculpted stems, this species keeps a plain, round, hollow stalk that is smooth from base to apex.

The species name refers to the flexible, pliant quality of the fruiting body, which bends rather than snapping when pushed. Its head is a neat saddle, usually with just two lobes bent down over the top of the stem, and the pale buff to greyish tan colouring is far lighter than in the black saddles.

Within the genus it sits with a small group of smooth-stalked species, and separating those species reliably can require attention to colour, the way the lobes attach, and microscopic spore detail. Even so, the plain stem alone rules out the majority of common Helvella species in the field.

How to identify it

Head

The fertile head is 1-4 cm across, saddle-shaped and usually two-lobed, with the lobes drooping over the stalk apex like a folded sheet. Colour is pale tan, buff, ochre-brown or greyish brown, sometimes darkening slightly with age. Importantly, the lobe margins hang free and are not fused to the stalk.

Surfaces

The upper spore-bearing surface is smooth and matt. The underside is paler, whitish to cream, and smooth or very finely mealy, without conspicuous veins running down onto the stem.

Stipe

3-10 cm tall but only 2-6 mm thick, whitish to pale cream, round in cross-section, hollow, and completely smooth - no ribs, no flutes, no pits. It may taper slightly upward and is often slightly swollen at the very base. This plain, slim stalk is the key identifying feature.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin, whitish, and notably pliant, bending before it breaks. There is no colour change on cutting. The spore deposit is white, and spores are smooth, broadly ellipsoid and contain a single large oil droplet.

Where and when it grows

The Elastic Saddle grows singly or in small scattered groups on damp soil, in leaf litter and among moss, most commonly in deciduous and mixed woodland. It favours shaded banks, damp hollows, mossy path edges and stream sides, and it is often found under beech, oak, birch and other broadleaf trees, as well as in mixed conifer stands.

Fruiting runs from summer through autumn, following periods of steady rain. The species is widespread across temperate Europe, North America and Asia, though because the fruiting bodies are small and pale they are often overlooked among leaf litter.

Ecological role

Like most of its genus, Helvella elastica is considered ectomycorrhizal, associating with the fine roots of broadleaf and coniferous trees and trading soil-derived water and minerals for host sugars. Fruiting bodies typically appear scattered across the forest floor rather than in dense clusters, reflecting a mycelium spread thinly through the soil.

The raised, slender stalk positions the exposed fertile surface above surrounding moss and litter, where discharged ascospores can be picked up by air movement. The pliant tissue lets the fruiting body flex under the weight of rain or falling leaves instead of collapsing, which helps it persist through a damp autumn.

Similar species

Helvella crispa has a similarly pale saddle but a much thicker stalk that is deeply fluted and chambered along its entire length. Helvella lacunosa likewise has a heavily ribbed stalk and is grey to blackish. Any Helvella with a sculpted stem can be set aside immediately.

Helvella macropus is closer in build but its head is cup- or saucer-shaped rather than saddle-shaped, and both the outer surface and the stalk are covered in fine grey felt. Helvella latispora and Helvella albella are the trickiest comparisons: they also have smooth stalks, and separation depends on cap colour, the width and attachment of the lobes, and spore measurements. Helvella atra has a smooth to slightly grooved but dark stalk paired with a blackish saddle.
