Elegant Stinkhorn Identification Guide
How to work through Mutinus elegans in the field, from the half-buried egg to the tapering orange column with spore slime smeared straight onto its tip. Includes the pitted surface, the volva and rooting cord, and the morphological line between it and the other stinkhorns.

You will usually smell the Elegant Stinkhorn before you see it. Standing in a garden bed, a mulched border, a leaf-littered corner of a yard or the edge of a hardwood wood in warm, humid weather, you catch a heavy carrion note on the air and then start scanning the ground. What you are looking for is a single unbranched orange column rising 10 to 18 cm out of wood chips, litter or lawn thatch, tapering evenly toward a narrowed tip, usually leaning or gently curved, and often surrounded by flies.
Stinkhorns are fast. A fruitbody can push out of its egg and reach full height in a few hours, and it may collapse into an orange smear within a day or two. That speed means you frequently find all stages at once: firm white eggs half buried nearby, one column at full stretch, and a slumped remnant from yesterday. Take advantage of it and examine every stage, because the egg is as diagnostic as the mature column.
The Mature Column
The fruitbody is a single hollow, spongy stalk with no separate cap, no ring and no gills of any sort. It measures roughly 1 to 2 cm thick at the widest point, usually about a third of the way up, and narrows steadily toward a tapered, often slightly bent apex that ends bluntly or almost pointed.
Colour runs as a gradient. The upper half is a strong orange to orange-red or scarlet, and this fades downward through salmon and pale orange to whitish or pinkish-white just above the base. There is no sharp colour boundary anywhere on the stalk, and that gradual wash is a real character rather than a variable one.
Look at the wall with a hand lens. The surface is finely pitted and ridged, like a piece of orange pumice or a coarse sponge, because the stalk is built from chambered tissue that inflates with water. Break the column across and you will see a single hollow tube with a spongy wall a few millimetres thick. The tissue is soft, watery and fragile; it tears rather than snaps, and it will not hold its shape once the fruitbody starts to slump.
Where the Spores Sit
This is the character that defines the genus. There is no separate spore-bearing cap. The dark olive to blackish-brown gleba is applied directly onto the outer surface of the upper third to half of the stalk, with no line of demarcation, no differently shaped head and no free hanging skirt. On a fresh column the top looks as though someone smeared it with tar.
Flies remove that slime quickly, and a specimen that has been worked over for a few hours may look almost clean. You can still read the extent of the gleba zone: the surface beneath it stays slightly darker, duller and more roughened than the smooth pitted orange below, and the boundary is diffuse rather than sharp.
The Egg, the Base and the Cord
At the foot of the column sits the volva, the ruptured remains of the egg: a whitish to pale pinkish or dingy tan sac, 2 to 3.5 cm across, usually partly buried, with an irregular torn rim clasping the base of the stalk. Excavate it whole rather than snapping the column off at ground level. Beneath the volva you should find one or several white cords of mycelium, sometimes several centimetres long, running off into the substrate.
If you find an unopened egg, cut it vertically with a sharp knife. In section you will see a thin outer skin, a thick clear gelatinous layer beneath it, and inside that the compressed, folded orange column with a band of olive gleba already formed at what will become its upper surface. That layered section, with no gill plates and no solid spore mass, confirms a stinkhorn immediately.
Flesh, Odour and Colour Change
The flesh of the stalk is white to pale orange, spongy and waterlogged. There is no colour change on cutting or bruising beyond gradual fading as the fruitbody ages and dries. The odour is powerfully foetid, a putrid or carrion-like smell that carries several metres downwind on a warm day; it is generated by the gleba, so a fruitbody stripped clean by flies smells far less. That odour is functional ecology rather than an incidental trait — the spores are dispersed on the feet and in the guts of flies, beetles and ants rather than by air.
Why a Spore Print Is the Wrong Tool
Do not try to take a conventional print. The spores are bound in slime and are not released into the air, so a fruitbody left on paper deposits nothing but a sticky stain. Instead, if you want to confirm microscopically, dab a trace of gleba onto a slide with a drop of water. The spores are very small, roughly 4 to 7 by 2 to 3 micrometres, smooth, narrowly elliptical to cylindrical and pale olive in mass. Their tiny size and regular shape are consistent across the family.
Substrate, Habitat and Season
The Elegant Stinkhorn is a saprotroph on woody debris. It fruits from wood-chip mulch, garden beds, compost-enriched soil, lawns underlain by buried roots, sawdust piles, rotting stumps and hardwood leaf litter. It is most abundant in eastern North America and has spread widely with landscaping mulch, which is why suburban plantings often produce it in quantity. It appears from late spring through autumn wherever warmth and humidity coincide, often in loose troops of several fruitbodies, with a strong flush a day or two after heavy summer rain.
Separating It From the Other Stinkhorns
The question is almost always which Mutinus or Phallus you have, and the answer is structural.
Mutinus caninus is slimmer and much paler, with a whitish to pale yellow stalk and a small, clearly set-off orange to red head about 1 to 1.5 cm long that is narrower than the stalk below it. The gleba is confined to that head. In the Elegant Stinkhorn the colour and the gleba both grade continuously into the stalk with no differentiated head at all.
Mutinus ravenelii is shorter and proportionally thicker, pink to pinkish-red, with a swollen apex that is abruptly demarcated from the paler stalk and a blunter tip. Look for the shoulder where head meets stalk; the Elegant Stinkhorn has none.
Phallus species carry a genuinely separate cap: a thimble-shaped or bell-shaped structure hanging free from the top of a white or pale stalk, its surface either strongly pitted and net-like or granular, usually with a small pale disc and pore at the very summit. Once you see a cap that can be lifted away from the stalk, you have left Mutinus.
Lysurus, Clathrus and their relatives open into arms, columns or a red lattice rather than remaining a single tapering spike.
Finally, an unopened egg can be mistaken for the buried base of other fungi. Sectioning settles it: gill plates inside mean an Amanita button, a solid dark powdery interior means an earthball, and a gelatinous layer wrapped around a folded orange column means this species.
