A tightly appressed, brilliant orange rock lichen forming neat rosettes of narrow radiating lobes, common on bird-perch boulders in alpine and arctic country.

Overview

The Elegant Sunburst Lichen is the brilliant orange starburst seen on summit boulders, scree and bird-perch rocks throughout the mountains and high latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Long known as Xanthoria elegans and still frequently listed under that name, it is now placed in Rusavskia, within the orange-pigmented family Teloschistaceae.

Unlike its leafy relative the Common Orange Lichen, this species presses itself flat against stone. The thallus is placodioid — crustose in the centre, with the outer zone breaking into narrow, elongate, radiating lobes that give the rosette its neat sunburst outline. Colour ranges from bright yellow-orange to a deep, almost brick red-orange in strongly exposed sites.

It is a byword for extreme endurance among lichens: it grows on the highest rock faces, in polar deserts, and on freshly exposed ground where little else can establish, and has featured in long-running studies of survival under intense ultraviolet and freezing conditions. Its slow, steady radial growth also makes it a standard subject for lichenometry, the dating of rock surfaces from lichen diameter.

How to identify it

Thallus

The thallus forms rounded rosettes typically 1–8 cm across, occasionally merging into much larger sheets. It is closely appressed to the rock with no visible gap beneath and cannot be lifted intact. The centre is often cracked into small areoles, while the outer margin is divided into narrow, flat, elongate radiating lobes about 0.3–1.5 mm wide, giving a neat starburst edge.

Colour and surface

Colour is a strong orange, ranging from yellow-orange in sheltered spots to deep red-orange or brick where sun exposure is intense. The surface is smooth to slightly convex and matt, without soredia or isidia. A drop of potassium hydroxide solution produces an immediate deep purple-red reaction typical of the anthraquinone pigments in this family.

Apothecia

Apothecia are usually abundant in the centre of the rosette, 0.5–2.5 mm across, disc-shaped, and darker orange to red-orange than the surrounding thallus, with a persistent slightly raised thalline rim. Crowded apothecia can obscure the centre entirely, leaving only the radiating lobes visible around the edge.

Attachment and spores

There is no distinct white lower surface and no rhizines; the thallus is fused to the rock through its lower cortex. Spores are colourless and two-celled with a thickened central septum, produced in the apothecia and released as dust-fine ascospores.

Where and when it grows

This is a rock lichen, growing on siliceous and calcareous stone alike, though it clearly prefers surfaces enriched by nutrients. Summit boulders, cliff ledges, scree blocks, glacial erratics, stone walls, roof tiles and gravestones are all typical, and it is most luxuriant where birds and small mammals perch and deposit droppings — the classic orange-splashed lookout rock.

It is circumpolar and montane, common through the Arctic, the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, Scandinavia, Siberia, and the high country of Asia and western North America, with outposts in Antarctica and on high peaks further south. It grows extremely slowly, often only a fraction of a millimetre per year, and individual rosettes may be many decades or centuries old. Being perennial and evergreen, it is visible in every season, including on snow-free rock in winter.

Ecological role

Like all lichens, this is a symbiosis between a fungal partner that builds the thallus and green algal cells housed beneath the upper cortex that photosynthesise for the partnership. The heavy load of orange anthraquinone pigment in the cortex screens the algae from the very high ultraviolet levels found at altitude and high latitude, and is a direct adaptation to its exposed habitat.

Ecologically it is a pioneer coloniser of bare rock, slowly etching the mineral surface and trapping dust and organic debris, which over long timescales contributes to soil formation on scree and moraine. Because its radial growth rate is slow and reasonably consistent, the diameter of a rosette can be used to estimate how long a rock surface has been exposed — the basis of lichenometric dating of glacial moraines and rockfalls. Reproduction is mainly by wind-dispersed ascospores from the abundant apothecia; establishment requires a compatible alga, so colonisation of new rock is unhurried.

Similar species

Xanthoria parietina, the common orange lichen, is the most likely confusion but is fully foliose: its broad rounded lobes lift away from the substrate, and its lower surface is white with rhizines. It also favours bark and enriched walls rather than open mountain rock. Rusavskia elegans is pressed flat with no lift and no white underside.

Caloplaca species share the orange colour, rock habitat and purple potassium hydroxide reaction, but most are wholly crustose with no radiating marginal lobes — the neat starburst edge is the key separator. Yellow Rhizocarpon geographicum, the map lichen, occupies the same summit boulders but is yellow-green with a distinctive black prothallus outlining irregular patches, and gives no purple reaction. Acarospora and yellow-orange Pleopsidium species on high rock are more granular or areolate, without the flat radiating lobes and with differently structured fruiting bodies.
