Fairy Ring Champignon Identification Guide

How to work through Marasmius oreades in short grass, from the dark green arc that gives it away to the widely spaced gills, the pliant wiry stem and the white spore print. Includes morphological separation from Clitocybe and Panaeolina.

The Setting and the First Look

You are standing on short grass. It might be a lawn, a churchyard, a grazed pasture, a playing field, a dune slack or a mown roadside verge. What catches the eye first is usually not a mushroom at all but a shape in the sward: a dark green arc of unusually lush grass curving through paler turf, sometimes bordered on its inner side by a narrow band of thin or bare ground. Follow the arc a day or two after rain and you find a line of small tan mushrooms standing in it, each one carried well clear of the grass on a slim, straight stalk.

Rings are the classic presentation but not compulsory. On heavily mown or heavily grazed ground the fruit bodies often appear as short broken arcs, straggling lines, or simply loose troops. What is consistent is the habitat, which is grassland rather than woodland litter, and the posture, which is a low broad dome held high on a thin stem.

Reading the Cap

Caps are 2 to 5 cm across, occasionally 6 cm on rich ground. Young ones are bluntly convex; mature ones flatten out but nearly always retain a broad, low central hump, and that gentle umbo is one of the most reliable field marks. The margin is smooth and even in dry weather and can become faintly grooved and slightly wavy after rain.

Colour is where beginners come unstuck, because it changes with moisture. Wet caps are warm tan to date or leather brown; as they dry they fade from the centre outward to pale buff, cream or almost whitish, so a single ring in patchy weather can hold caps in three different shades. Very often a drying cap shows a darker zone around a paler disc, or vice versa. The surface itself is smooth and dry to slightly suede-like, never scaly, never slimy, and never sprinkled with veil fragments.

Reading the Gills

Turn a cap over. The gills should look conspicuously sparse. They are broad, thickish, well separated with obvious gaps between them, and interleaved with shorter gills of two or three lengths that start from the margin and stop partway in. Colour is white to pale cream, sometimes taking a faint buff tinge with age, but they never turn pink, brown, grey or black.

Attachment is the other half of this check. The gills are free of the stipe or attached to it only narrowly, so that a shallow gutter of clear space usually surrounds the stem apex. They do not run down the stem. That combination, broad and distant plus free or nearly free, is the single most useful gill signature of this species.

The Stem Test

The stipe is 3 to 8 cm tall and 2 to 5 mm thick, more or less equal from top to bottom, cream to pale tan and often slightly darker toward the base, with a fine velvety bloom that shows under a lens. There is no ring and no sheath or cup at the base, which typically emerges from a small tuft of grass roots and soil bound by white mycelial threads.

Now do the test that names the genus. Take the stem between finger and thumb and twist it. A Marasmius stipe is tough, pliant and wiry, more like a length of cord than a mushroom stalk. It resists, bends and can be twisted through a full turn without shattering. Most of the grassland mushrooms it is confused with have brittle stems that snap cleanly and crisply. Do this on every candidate; it takes two seconds and settles a great deal.

Flesh, Odour and Revival

Slice a cap and stem in half lengthways. The flesh is white, thin in the cap and tough and stringy in the stipe, which is solid or narrowly stuffed rather than widely hollow. There is no colour change of any kind on cutting or on bruising, and no latex.

The odour is distinctive enough to be worth taking seriously: a sweetish, slightly nutty scent recalling almond kernels combined with dry hay, best appreciated by cutting several caps and cupping them in the hand.

One more genus character, and a very good one, is marcescence. In a dry spell the fruit bodies do not rot; they shrink, harden and persist as pale leathery shreds standing in the turf. When rain returns, those same fruit bodies swell, soften and resume shedding spores. If you find shrivelled tan caps in a ring after a fortnight of drought, you have almost certainly found this species.

Taking a Spore Print

Pick a fully open cap, cut the stem off flush, and set the cap gills-down on white paper under a glass or cup for three to six hours. The print is white, occasionally with the faintest cream cast in a very thick deposit. Because the print is white, print onto dark paper or glass as well if you want to judge it confidently.

Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid to tear-shaped, roughly 7 to 10 by 4 to 6 micrometres, and give no blue-black reaction in iodine.

Substrate, Season and Ring Behaviour

This is a grassland decomposer. Its mycelium works through the mat of dead grass, thatch and root fibre in the top few centimetres of soil, releasing nutrients that produce the dark green stimulated band, while the densest part of the mycelial front can make the soil water-repellent and produce the thin or bare zone just inside it.

Because the mycelium grows outward from a starting point and dies out behind, the ring expands year on year, commonly by ten to thirty centimetres, and old rings on undisturbed pasture can be many metres across. Fruiting runs from late spring to late autumn, always keyed to rainfall, with the heaviest flushes a few days after a good soaking.

Separating It from Look-alikes on Structure

Clitocybe species of open turf, such as C. rivulosa and C. dealbata, share a white spore print and the same lawns. They differ in almost every structural detail: the cap is white to greyish and often flushed or zoned with chalky bloom, without a central hump and often shallowly depressed; the gills are crowded, narrow and run visibly down the stem; and the stipe is brittle and snaps rather than twisting. Gill spacing plus gill attachment plus stem toughness will separate them every time.

Panaeolina foenisecii, the other constant lawn mushroom, has a conical to bell-shaped dark brown cap that fades in bands, gills that are mottled greyish brown and adnate, a fragile snapping stem, and a dark brown spore print.

Conocybe species stand in the same grass on very thin fragile stems, but their caps are conical, their gills turn rusty ochre, and their spore print is rust brown.

Small Agaricus species in pasture have gills that pass from pink to chocolate brown and a dark brown print, plus a ring on the stem.

Other Marasmius species share the tough stem but are mostly much smaller, grow on leaf litter or twigs rather than grass, and often have a gill collar around the stem apex, which Fairy Ring Champignon lacks.

Common questions

What is the fastest structural check to confirm the species in a lawn?
Combine three quick observations. First, look at the gills: they should be broad, noticeably widely spaced and free or almost free of the stem, never crowded and never running down it. Second, twist the stem; it should bend and rotate like cord instead of snapping. Third, look for the broad low hump at the centre of an otherwise flattish tan cap. If all three agree and the spore print is white, the identification is secure.
Why does the same ring contain caps of several different colours?
The cap is hygrophanous, meaning its colour depends on how much water is held in the flesh. Fully hydrated caps are warm tan to leather brown; as they lose moisture they fade from the disc outward to buff or nearly cream. In changeable weather, caps of different ages and different exposure dry at different rates, so a single ring can show dark, two-toned and pale caps side by side. Judge shape, gill spacing and stem texture rather than colour.
What causes the dark green arc in the grass?
The mycelium decomposes dead grass, thatch and root litter in the upper soil, and the nitrogen released by that breakdown fertilises the living grass just outside the active front, producing a band of unusually lush dark growth. Immediately behind that band the mycelium can be so dense that it water-proofs the soil and depletes it, which is why many rings show a thin or bare inner zone between two greener bands.
Do the fruit bodies really recover after drying out?
Yes, and it is a useful genus character. Instead of rotting in dry weather, the caps shrink and harden into pale leathery shreds that stay standing in the turf, sometimes for weeks. When rain arrives they rehydrate, regain their shape and colour, and continue releasing spores. Finding shrivelled tan caps in a ring during a dry spell, and watching them plump up after a shower, is strong supporting evidence.
