Fairy Ring Mushroom
Marasmius oreades
Also called scotch bonnet, fairy ring champignon, mousseron
A small, tough-stemmed grassland mushroom with a tan, broadly umbonate cap and widely spaced pale gills, famous for growing in expanding rings and arcs on lawns and pasture.
Overview
Marasmius oreades belongs to a genus of small, tough, litter-decomposing agarics defined by their ability to dry out completely and revive. A shrivelled Marasmius on a sun-baked lawn will rehydrate after rain and continue producing spores, a trick called marcescence that ordinary soft-fleshed mushrooms cannot manage.
It is the archetypal fairy-ring fungus. The mycelium radiates outward from a starting point at a fairly constant rate, exhausting nutrients behind it, so fruitbodies appear in an ever-widening circle or arc. The grass often responds in a characteristic banded pattern - a dark green stimulated zone, sometimes a bare or browned band, and another green zone - which is visible on lawns long after the mushrooms have gone.
Because it is small, buff-coloured and grows in exactly the same habitat as several other little grassland agarics, M. oreades is identified as much by texture as by colour: a wiry, tough, twistable stem and a pliant cap that will not shatter are as important as the shape.
How to identify it
Cap
2-5 cm across, convex or bell-shaped at first, expanding to flat with a persistent broad, blunt central umbo. The colour is tan, buff or pale leather-brown when moist, drying to cream or pale buff, often with a slightly darker centre. The surface is smooth and dry, and the margin becomes faintly grooved or wavy with age.
Gills
Pale cream to buff, broad, thick and notably widely spaced, free to narrowly adnexed at the stem. The wide spacing is one of the strongest field characters, and the gills stay pale rather than darkening.
Stipe
3-8 cm long and 2-5 mm thick, equal, pale buff to whitish, and remarkably tough - it is wiry and fibrous, twisting rather than snapping when bent. It has no ring and no volva, and the base is often slightly downy where it meets the turf.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh is thin, whitish and pliant, and the whole fruitbody dries into a leathery husk that revives after rain. The spore print is white. Fruitbodies characteristically appear in rings, arcs or long lines rather than random scatters.
Where and when it grows
It grows in short, well-grazed or mown grassland: lawns, playing fields, verges, churchyards, pastures, golf courses, dunes and open grassy woodland rides. It is a soil and thatch decomposer rather than a wood or dung fungus, and it prefers sites where the turf is regularly cut or grazed and not heavily fertilised.
The season runs from late spring through summer and into autumn, with flushes appearing a few days after significant rain - it fruits earlier in the year than most grassland mushrooms. It is common and widespread throughout Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and rings on old lawns and pastures may be decades or even centuries old.
Ecological role
Marasmius oreades is saprophytic, decomposing dead grass roots, thatch and organic matter in the upper soil. Its mycelium forms a dense, water-repellent mat as it advances, which is what produces the browned or bare band of turf sometimes seen inside a ring, while the release of nitrogen from decomposed material behind the front stimulates the vivid dark-green grass growth on either side.
Rings expand outward year on year, typically by tens of centimetres, because the mycelium can only grow into soil it has not already exhausted. Where two rings meet they annihilate each other along the contact line, producing broken arcs - a useful clue that a seemingly random arc in a lawn is really part of an old ring system. The species is a significant nutrient recycler in grassland, returning nitrogen from dead root material to actively growing turf.
Similar species
Clitocybe rivulosa and C. dealbata fruit in the same short turf, often in rings, but are chalky white to greyish with crowded, narrow, distinctly decurrent gills and a brittle stem that snaps; their caps are flat or depressed, never with a blunt umbo. Marasmius wynneae is greyer-lilac and grows in woodland leaf litter rather than grass.
Mottlegills (Panaeolus species) share the grassland habitat and umbonate outline but have mottled grey-black gills and a black spore print. Conocybe species are more fragile, with conical caps, crowded gills and a rusty-brown spore print. Field Cap (Agrocybe pediades) is also small and buff but has adnate, brown-maturing gills and a brown print. Texture is decisive throughout: only Marasmius has that wiry, twistable, unbreakable stem.
