A pale, tough, coral-like fungus whose flattened branches fuse sideways into fan-shaped or rosette-like masses on woodland soil. It looks like a coral fungus but belongs to the jelly fungus lineage.

Overview

Tremellodendron pallidum is a distinctive fungus of eastern North American hardwood forests, forming dense, pale, upright clumps that at first glance are unmistakably coral-like. Closer inspection shows something odd: the branches are flattened rather than round, and neighbouring branches repeatedly grow together sideways so that whole sections merge into flat plates or fans.

Despite the shape, this is not a true club or coral fungus. It sits in the Sebacinales, an order of heterobasidiomycetes whose members have septate basidia — the same broad lineage as Sebacina and Tremella. What it does not share with typical jelly fungi is texture: the flesh is tough, leathery and fibrous rather than wobbly, so the fungus behaves in the hand more like a Thelephora than a Tremella.

The species has often appeared in literature as Tremellodendron schweinitzii, and taxonomic opinion has moved it in and out of Sebacina. Whatever name is applied, the combination of a white coral outline with fused, flattened branches and a tough consistency is diagnostic in the field.

How to identify it

Fruit body

Clumps are 4–12 cm across and 3–8 cm tall, arising from a common tough base buried in litter. Branching is repeated and upright, but the branches are strap-like and compressed rather than cylindrical, and they anastomose — fuse to one another where they touch — producing fan-shaped plates, rosettes and irregular latticed masses.

Branch tips and surface

Branch tips are blunt, flattened and often toothed, notched or shallowly split rather than pointed. The surface is smooth to very finely wrinkled and dry, matt rather than glistening. Colour is white to pale cream when young, becoming buff, dingy tan or faintly brownish in age and from the base upward.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is remarkably tough, pliant and fibrous — it flexes and tears rather than snapping, which immediately separates it from brittle true corals. There is no colour change when cut and no liquid is released. The spore deposit is white; microscopically the basidia are longitudinally septate, placing it firmly among the heterobasidiomycetes.

Where and when it grows

False Coral fruits from soil and leaf litter in broadleaf and mixed forest, with a strong association with oaks and other ectomycorrhizal hardwoods. It often appears on relatively bare, compacted ground — trail sides, slopes, and open forest floor — where the pale clumps are conspicuous against dark litter.

The main season is summer into early autumn, following periods of steady rain. It is most familiar from eastern North America, where it can be locally abundant, with related Tremellodendron species reported from other regions.

Ecological role

Members of the Sebacinales are notable for their ecological versatility, and Tremellodendron is generally regarded as ectomycorrhizal, forming sheathing root associations with forest trees such as oaks. That partnership explains why the fungus fruits from mineral soil rather than from wood, and why it recurs in the same stands year after year.

Fruit bodies are annual but slow to develop and unusually persistent once formed, their tough tissue resisting collapse for weeks. Old clumps darken and become discoloured but keep their shape, so the fan-like architecture stays recognisable long after fresh growth has stopped.

Similar species

Clavulina coralloides (the Crested Coral) is also whitish and branched, but its branches are round in cross-section, tipped with fine crested or antler-like points, and its flesh is brittle and snaps cleanly. Crucially, Clavulina branches do not fuse sideways into flat plates.

Ramaria species growing on soil are usually more richly coloured — ochre, tan, pink or lilac at the tips — and have a thick fleshy base with brittle, non-fusing branches; most also give an ochre-yellow spore deposit rather than white. Thelephora palmata and Thelephora anthocephala share the leathery, tough texture and fused flattened branches, but they are grey-brown to purplish-brown rather than white. Sebacina incrustans, a close relative, grows as an enveloping crust over litter and plant stems and only occasionally raises short lobes, never building a tall branched clump.
