False Death Cap Identification Guide
How to work through Amanita citrina in the field, from the pale lemon cap with its thick buff veil patches down to the rimmed, saucer-like marginate bulb that defines the species.
The Setting and the First Impression
You tend to meet Amanita citrina on acidic, sandy woodland floors under beech, oak or birch, or on the needle-strewn ground of a pine stand, from late summer through autumn. It stands out because it is pale in a season of browns: a medium-sized, clean, softly lemon-tinted mushroom, usually solitary or in scattered troops, standing upright with a well-proportioned stem and a visible skirt. From a metre away the shape is textbook Amanita, a symmetrical convex cap on a straight white stem that swells into an obvious knob at ground level. Before touching it, note two things: whether the cap carries patches, and whether the stem base is buried. The base is where this identification is won, so plan to excavate rather than pluck.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 4 to 10 cm across, hemispherical at first, then broadly convex and finally almost flat with a low central rise. Colour is a soft pale lemon to greenish-yellow, sometimes fading nearly to ivory; a common form is white throughout apart from the veil patches. The surface is smooth and faintly tacky in damp weather, matt and silky when dry. Sitting on it are the remains of the universal veil: large, flat, irregular patches of thick, felted tissue, usually buff to dull ochre or tan rather than pure white, sometimes reduced to one broad sheet across the disc. These patches are easily knocked off by rain, so absence is not conclusive. The margin is smooth and even, without the radial grooves seen in several relatives.
The Gills
Underneath, the gills are free: they stop just short of the stem and leave a clean channel between gill ends and stem apex. Check this by slicing the cap in half vertically rather than by eye alone. They are crowded, moderately broad, white to cream with a faint yellow cast, and under a lens their edges look minutely floccose. Short gills of varying lengths are interspersed among the full-length ones. There is no pink phase and no darkening with age; mature gills stay pale, which is exactly why the spore print colour matters so much in this genus.
Stipe, Ring and the Marginate Bulb
The stipe is 6 to 12 cm tall and 1 to 2 cm thick, white to very pale yellow, tapering slightly upward, often finely fibrillose and sometimes faintly scaly below the ring. The ring sits high on the stem, is large, membranous and pendulous, and may be faintly grooved on its upper face with a yellowish rim. Now dig. Slide a knife or finger well below the leaf litter and lift the whole base out intact. What you want to see is an abrupt, rounded bulb that ends in a distinct rim or gutter, so that the bulb sits like a ball dropped into a shallow saucer. This is a marginate bulb, and the volval tissue is fused to it as a collar rather than forming a free bag. If instead you find a loose membranous sack that can be opened out with a fingernail, you are not in this species.
Flesh and Colour Change
Split a fresh fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is white and firm, often with a thin yellowish zone directly beneath the cap skin, and the stem is stuffed becoming hollow in older specimens. There is no dramatic colour change on cutting; at most the cut surfaces yellow very slightly over several minutes. A crushed fragment of the bulb gives off a distinctly starchy, earthy, cellar-like smell that is much weaker or absent in the closest relatives, and it is strongest in freshly exposed tissue at the base.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stem flush with the gills, place the cap gill-side down on a black surface or on paper that is half black and half white, cover with a bowl to keep humidity up, and leave it for four to twelve hours. Amanita citrina drops a pure white deposit. On white paper a white print is nearly invisible, which is why the dark background matters; tilt the sheet to the light and you will see a matt white shadow of the gill pattern. A white print is shared with several related genera, so it functions here as confirmation rather than as a stand-alone character.
Substrate and Season
This is an ectomycorrhizal species, living in partnership with tree roots, so it always appears in the ground near living trees and never on wood. It favours light, acidic, sandy or gravelly soils and is most consistent under beech, oak, birch and pines, including plantation ground and sandy heathy woodland. Fruiting runs from late summer into late autumn, peaking in the middle of the season, and it is one of the most frequently encountered pale Amanitas across much of its range. It often fruits in the same square metres year after year, since the mycelium is a long-lived root partner.
Separating It from Close Relatives
Amanita phalloides is the species people want to rule out on shape alone. Its cap is olive to yellowish-green with fine innate radial fibrils that give a silky streaked look, it is normally free of veil patches, and its base carries a free, membranous, bag-like volva that can be teased open; it has no rimmed bulb. Amanita porphyria also has a marginate bulb but wears a grey-brown to lilac-tinged cap with greyish patches and a greyish ring. Amanita gemmata is a warmer ochre-yellow, its warts are white and removable, its ring is thin and fugitive, its cap margin is often faintly grooved, and its bulb has a short free collar rather than a clean gutter. Pure white forms of Amanita citrina should be compared against the tall white Amanitas with shaggy-fibrillose stems and sack-like volvas, and against Agaricus species, which have gills that turn pink and then dark brown and a chocolate-brown spore print.
A Field Sequence That Works
Confirm a woodland soil habitat near living trees; note pale lemon cap with thick buff patches and an ungrooved margin; verify free, pale, non-darkening gills; find a large pendulous ring high on the stem; excavate the base and confirm an abrupt bulb with a distinct rim and no free bag; check the starchy cellar-like smell at the bulb; finish with a white spore print.
