A spring ascomycete with a reddish to dark brown head thrown into irregular convoluted lobes like a brain or a crumpled turban, with no ridge-and-pit honeycomb. Cut vertically it is irregularly chambered rather than one clean hollow.
Overview
The False Morel is the best-known member of Gyromitra, a genus of spring ascomycetes whose fruiting bodies mimic the general shape of a morel while being built quite differently. Instead of a honeycomb of ridges surrounding pits, the fertile head is a mass of irregular folds, wrinkles and lobes pressed together and often rolled under at the margins, producing the brain-like or convoluted-turban appearance that gives it its common names.
It is a member of the Discinaceae, a family of operculate ascomycetes related to the cup fungi, and it demonstrates how easily the same overall silhouette - fertile head on a stalk - has evolved more than once among the ascomycetes. The resemblance is superficial; a vertical section separates the two groups immediately.
Gyromitra esculenta is a familiar sight in northern conifer forests, particularly on sandy soils and disturbed ground, and it is one of the earliest large fungi of the year, sometimes appearing while snow still lies in shaded hollows.
How to identify it
Head
Irregularly rounded to broadly saddle-shaped, 2-10 cm wide and up to about 8 cm tall, its surface a dense mass of contorted folds, wrinkles and lobes resembling a brain, a walnut kernel or a crumpled turban. There are no ridges surrounding regular pits and no honeycomb pattern. The margins are typically rolled inward and often partly fused to the stalk at scattered points rather than joined in a clean line.
Colour
Chestnut to reddish-brown, dark purplish-brown, or in older specimens dull dark brown to almost black. Young specimens can be paler tan or yellow-brown. The underside of the folds is paler, whitish to buff and often finely granular.
Stalk
Short and stout relative to the head, 2-6 cm tall, whitish to pale buff or flushed pinkish, often irregularly furrowed, compressed or grooved. Cut lengthways it is not simply hollow but irregularly chambered, with internal folds and pockets, sometimes partly stuffed.
Flesh and section
The decisive character. A vertical cut through the whole fruiting body shows a complex of irregular chambers, convolutions and cavities running through both head and stalk, rather than one clean, continuous hollow space. The flesh is thin, brittle and whitish.
Spore print
Pale cream to yellowish. Spores are elliptical and smooth to slightly roughened, each usually containing two oil droplets.
Where and when it grows
The False Morel is a ground fungus of coniferous and mixed woodland, showing a strong preference for pine and spruce on sandy, gravelly or otherwise well-drained acid soils. It is frequently found in clearings, along forest tracks and roadside banks, on logged or otherwise disturbed ground, on old burn sites, and among mosses and needle litter at the edges of plantations.
It fruits in spring, often very early - from March or April through to June depending on latitude and altitude - and is one of the first substantial fungi of the year in northern forests. It is widespread across northern and central Europe, Scandinavia and Russia, and occurs across the northern United States, Canada and mountainous regions further south.
Ecological role
Gyromitra esculenta is generally regarded as saprotrophic, its mycelium decomposing needle litter, buried woody debris and soil organic matter in conifer forest. Some observations suggest a possible weak association with conifer roots, but the evidence points chiefly toward a decomposer role, and the species' fondness for disturbed, logged and burnt ground is consistent with an opportunistic litter and debris recycler.
As an early-spring fruiter it occupies a seasonal niche with few competitors, releasing spores when the forest floor is wet from snowmelt and air movement is good beneath a still-leafless or open canopy. Spores are produced in asci lining the exposed outer surface of the folded head and are actively discharged into the air. The convoluted folding of the head is a means of packing a large fertile surface into a compact fruiting body, the same functional problem solved differently by the pits and ridges of true morels.
Similar species
True morels (Morchella species) are the primary comparison and separate cleanly on structure. Their heads carry a regular honeycomb of ridges enclosing distinct pits, the base of the head is fused to the stalk in a clean line, and a vertical cut reveals one continuous hollow chamber from apex to base. The False Morel's head is lobed and brain-like with no pit-and-ridge network, and its interior is a maze of irregular chambers.
Other Gyromitra species are closer relatives. The Snow Morel (Gyromitra gigas group) is paler tan to yellowish-brown with a thicker, more massive stalk and a less deeply contorted head. Gyromitra infula, the Hooded False Morel, has a distinctly saddle-shaped, two- or three-lobed head that is smooth to only shallowly wrinkled, and it fruits mainly in autumn on rotting wood. Gyromitra ancilis (the Pig's Ear) forms a broad, shallow, cup- or plate-like body rather than a raised brain-like head. Saddle fungi (Helvella species) share the saddle outline but have thin, smooth to lobed caps and often deeply ribbed, fluted stalks.
