Overview
Felt-ringed Agaricus (Agaricus hondensis) is a robust woodland species of the Pacific coast of North America, named for its most conspicuous structure: an unusually thick, felty ring whose underside carries irregular cottony or scaly patches, giving it a padded, quilted appearance quite unlike the thin skirt-like rings of most relatives.
It belongs to the yellow-staining, phenolic-smelling section of Agaricus, alongside the grey-scaled species of woodland and the smooth-capped Yellow Stainer, and shares with them a bulbous stipe base that flushes yellow when cut and a sharp inky odour concentrated in the base. Its cap, however, is less starkly patterned than its grey-scaled relatives — the fibrils are pinkish-brown to vinaceous-brown over a pale ground, producing a warmer, softer overall tone.
As a large, fleshy and frequently encountered mushroom of Californian oak woodland and coastal conifer forest, it is one of the more familiar autumn and winter agarics of the region, often fruiting abundantly after the first substantial rains of the season.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 6–15 cm across, convex to broadly convex, flattening in age. The surface is dry and covered with fine appressed fibrils and small flattened scales in shades of pinkish-brown, vinaceous-brown or greyish-brown over a whitish to pale buff ground; the fibrils are densest at the centre and thin toward the margin, which is often nearly white. The margin frequently carries hanging veil fragments in young specimens.
Gills
The gills are free from the stipe, crowded and narrow, whitish to pale greyish when young — sometimes with a faint pinkish cast — then passing through pinkish-brown to a deep chocolate brown at maturity.
Stipe
The stipe is 6–15 cm long and 1–2.5 cm thick, white, smooth above the ring and slightly fibrillose below, hollowing with age, and swelling into a marked basal bulb. The ring is the key character: thick, white, membranous to felty and pendulous, with a conspicuously cottony or patchily scaly underside, and it usually persists intact into maturity. Cutting the bulb produces a yellow stain, sometimes prompt and clear, sometimes slower and duller, that fades brownish.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is white and firm, yellowing on cutting most strongly in the stipe base. The odour is inky, chemical or phenolic, most noticeable at the base and when the flesh is warmed. The spore print is dark chocolate brown.
Where and when it grows
Felt-ringed Agaricus is a woodland species of the western United States, particularly common in coastal California. It fruits in leaf litter and humus under coast live oak and other oaks, in mixed hardwood forest, and under conifers including Monterey pine, Douglas fir and coast redwood. It also appears in wooded parks, on shaded trail edges and in landscaped areas with mature oaks, singly, in scattered troops or in loose groups.
The season follows the region's rainfall pattern, running from autumn through winter and sometimes into early spring in the wettest coastal areas. Its distribution is centred on California and extends north along the Pacific coast and into adjacent parts of the western states, with the species largely absent from the eastern half of the continent, where related grey-scaled taxa take its place.
Ecological role
This species is a saprotroph, feeding on decomposing leaf litter, fallen oak and conifer debris, and humus in the upper soil. It forms no mycorrhizal relationship with the trees under which it grows; the association is with the specific litter chemistry, shade and moisture those trees create. Oak litter in particular is tannin-rich and slow to decay, and the fungi that specialise in it are important to nutrient turnover in Californian oak woodland.
The mycelium persists year-round in the soil and litter and responds to the onset of winter rains with a concentrated fruiting period, which is why the species can appear in quantity within a week or two of the first heavy rainfall. Its breakdown of litter releases nutrients used by oaks, understorey shrubs and herbs, and its fruit bodies support slugs, banana slugs, small mammals and a range of fly larvae that assist in spore dispersal.
Similar species
California Agaricus (Agaricus californicus) is a smaller, generally paler species with a smoother, less fibrillose cap, a thinner flaring ring, and a preference for lawns, gardens and open ground rather than deep woodland litter. Flat-topped Agaricus (Agaricus placomyces) and Inky Mushroom (A. moelleri) share the yellow-staining bulb and inky odour but have distinctly grey-brown to blackish cap scales over a whiter ground and thinner rings without the felty, cottony underside.
Prince-type and Horse Mushroom relatives in the arvensis group differ in their smooth whitish caps, cogwheel-patterned rings and sweet aniseed rather than phenolic odour. Blushing Wood Mushroom (Agaricus silvaticus) has warm reddish-brown scales and its flesh turns red on cutting instead of yellow.
