Fire Morel
Morchella tomentosa
Also called gray morel, fuzzy foot morel, burn morel
A dark grey, fire-following morel of western conifer burns, coated in fine woolly down when young and often with a thickened, double-walled stalk base. It fruits in quantity in the first spring or two after a wildfire.
Overview
Morchella tomentosa is a black-clade morel defined by two things: a fine grey tomentum, or woolly covering, on young fruiting bodies, and a strict dependence on recently burned ground. It is one of several fire-following morels in western North America, and the species epithet refers directly to its downy surface.
Pyrophilic, or fire-loving, fungi form a distinctive ecological guild. Wildfire sterilises the upper soil, kills competing mycelium, releases a pulse of mineral nutrients and leaves a layer of charcoal that alters soil chemistry. A small set of specialist fungi is adapted to exploit that brief window, and burn morels are among the most conspicuous. Mass fruitings can carpet a burn in the first spring after fire, then fade within two or three years as the ordinary soil community re-establishes.
The species is centred on the montane conifer forests of western North America, from the Sierra Nevada and Cascades through the Rockies and into the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska, wherever stand-replacing fire runs through spruce, fir, pine or Douglas fir.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is conical to elongated-conical, 4-10 cm tall, and fully attached to the stalk at the rim without a free skirt. Ridges are sharp and run mainly vertically with cross-connections, and are dark grey to blackish; pits are grey, greyish-brown or slightly olive. Young specimens are covered all over with a fine greyish felt or down that softens the outline and dulls the colours; this tomentum wears away with weathering, so old fruiting bodies look smoother and simply dark. Under a hand lens on a fresh specimen the fuzz is unmistakable.
Stipe
The stalk is whitish to grey-buff, often noticeably enlarged and folded at the base, and coated in the same fine down when young, which gives the fungus its "fuzzy foot" nickname. A lengthwise cut frequently reveals unusually thick, sometimes layered or apparently double flesh in the lower stalk, so the hollow does not run as evenly as in most morels.
Flesh & spore deposit
The flesh is greyish to whitish and firmer than in many morels, without dramatic colour change on cutting, though the surfaces may darken with age and weathering. A spore deposit is cream to pale yellow.
Where and when it grows
This is a burn specialist. It fruits on the ash, charcoal and scorched duff of conifer forest that has recently carried fire, typically at moderate to high elevation, and is closely associated with spruce, true fir, lodgepole and other pines, and Douglas fir. It also appears on old fire scars, along burned road cuts and around charred stumps, but is rare or absent from unburned forest.
Fruiting follows snowmelt on the burn, usually from late spring into early summer, and tracks elevation so that low burns produce first and high ones weeks later. The heaviest flushes come in the first spring after the fire, sometimes with a smaller second-year flush; by the third year the species has generally disappeared from that site. Its range covers western North America from California and Colorado north through British Columbia to the Alaskan and Canadian boreal forest.
Ecological role
Fire morels sit at the saprotrophic end of the morel spectrum during their fruiting phase, drawing on the flush of dead roots, killed mycelium, scorched litter and charcoal-conditioned soil that follows a stand-replacing burn. Whether the mycelium also maintained a root association with the trees before they burned is still debated, and a shift from a partnership with living trees to decomposition of their remains would explain the abrupt, one-off nature of the fruiting.
Sclerotia in the soil are central to the life cycle. These hardened mycelial packets can survive the passage of fire beneath the insulating soil layer and then convert their reserves into fruiting bodies once the canopy is gone, sunlight warms the ground and snowmelt supplies water. The resulting spore rain colonises fresh burns elsewhere. Ecologically the fungus is part of the first wave of post-fire recovery, recycling fire-killed organic matter and helping stabilise nutrients in bare, ash-covered soil.
Similar species
Other burn morels share the ground with it. Morchella eximia (also treated as M. septimelata) fruits on the same conifer burns but lacks any woolly covering, has ridges that blacken sharply against paler pits, and has an evenly hollow, non-thickened stalk base. Morchella exuberans is likewise fire-associated and smooth-surfaced, with a more slender, paler build.
Away from burns, Morchella snyderi is a forest black morel with a conspicuously pocketed, chambered stalk base and no tomentum, while Morchella importuna is a mulch and garden species with regular, ladder-like rectangular pits. Morchella frustrata, which can occur in the same mountains, is separated by its persistently pale cream ridges that never blacken.
