The Setting and the First Impression

This is a fungus of damp, well-rotted hardwood in shaded woodland, and it is uncommon enough that most people meet it by chance rather than by search. Typical situations are a decaying elm or maple trunk lying in leaf litter, the rotting heartwood inside a hollow standing tree, an old ash stump softened to punk, or a buried root exposed by a stream cut. What stops you is the colour: a small, brilliant scarlet or orange-red cap glowing against dark, wet, decayed wood. The fruit bodies are modest in size, usually single or in twos and threes, and they stand upright on a pale slender stem. Once seen, the combination of a fiery cap and a slim white stalk on rotten wood is memorable and hard to mistake for anything with a similar habit.

Reading the Cap

The cap is small, 1.5 to 5 cm across and rarely more. It opens from convex to plano-convex and often keeps a low broad umbo at the centre. The colour is at its most intense when young: a saturated scarlet to vermilion or bright orange-red, deepest over the disc. With age, sun and rain it fades outward, so a mature specimen is often orange over the middle and yellowish-orange to pale apricot toward the rim, which makes the fading itself a recognition cue. The surface is dry to slightly tacky in wet weather, minutely velvety at the margin, and characteristically wrinkled or finely rugose over the centre where the skin puckers into low ridges. There are no scales, no warts and no veil remnants at the edge.

The Gills

Underneath, the gills are free, ending in a clean space around the top of the stem, and this is a genus-level feature you should verify by cutting the fruit body vertically rather than by looking from beneath. They are crowded, fairly broad, ventricose in profile, and their colour is a sequence: white in the button, then pale pink, then a warmer salmon-pink, and finally a dull pinkish-brown as the spores mature. The gill edges are minutely fringed and frequently pick up a yellowish or pale orange tint, best seen with a lens against the light. Short gills of several lengths run in between the full-length ones.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stem is 2 to 6 cm long and only 3 to 6 mm thick, straight or slightly curved, equal or a little swollen at the base. It is whitish to pale cream over most of its length, usually washed with yellow to orange fibrils that increase downward, and the extreme base is often bound in orange-yellow woolly down that grips fragments of rotten wood. Two negatives are essential: there is no ring on the stem and no volva or sack at the base. Cut the fruit body lengthwise and the flesh is thin, soft, whitish to pale yellow, tinged orange directly beneath the cap skin. Nothing changes colour on cutting or bruising, there is no milk or latex, and the smell is faint and unremarkable.

Taking a Spore Print

The print is the confirmation step and it is quick. Cut the stem flush with the gills, set the cap gill-side down on white paper, cover it with a container to hold moisture, and leave it two to six hours. The deposit is pink, ranging from clean salmon-pink to a slightly brownish pink. That pink print, combined with free gills, a ringless stem and a wood substrate, is effectively the definition of the genus and it separates this fungus from every white-spored, brown-spored or black-spored small red cap you might meet in the same woodland.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Pluteus aurantiorugosus is a wood decomposer, drawing on the residual carbon in hardwood that is already well advanced in decay. Elm has a strong historical association, and maple, ash, poplar, beech and other broadleaved trees are all recorded. Look for the softest, wettest, most crumbly wood: the interiors of hollow trunks, log surfaces that dent under a thumb, wood mulch that has broken down for several seasons, and buried debris beneath leaf litter. Fruiting runs from summer into autumn and follows sustained damp weather. Because the fungus needs a very particular stage of decay, records tend to be scattered and short-lived, and a site may produce once and then not again for years as the log breaks down past the usable stage.

Separating It from Look-Alikes

Start within the genus. The yellow shields, including Pluteus chrysophaeus and its relatives and the golden Pluteus leoninus group, share free gills, pink spores and rotten hardwood, but their caps are yellow to olive-yellow or golden brown rather than scarlet. Pluteus romellii has a brown to olive-brown cap with a distinctly yellow stem. Where a faded orange specimen is in question, look at the disc, which retains the strongest colour longest, and at the wrinkling over the centre.

Outside the genus, the tests are structural. Small scarlet waxcaps in the genus Hygrocybe are grassland fungi with waxy, thick, distinctly attached or decurrent gills and a white spore print. Leucocoprinus and Leucoagaricus species with yellow caps carry a ring on the stem and print white. Cyptotrama asprata has a shaggy golden cap but attached white gills and a white print. Species of Entoloma also give pink prints, but their gills are attached to the stem rather than free and they grow from soil and moss rather than from rotten wood, so the combination of free gills plus a wood substrate resolves that pair. Small orange Marasmius and Mycena species have attached gills, white prints and tough or wiry stems.

A Field Sequence That Works

Confirm the substrate is well-rotted broadleaved wood; note a small scarlet to orange cap, wrinkled over the disc and fading toward the rim; cut vertically and confirm truly free gills; watch the gills change from white through pink; confirm no ring and no sack at the base; look for orange fibrils and orange basal down on a slender pale stem; finish with a pink spore print. That sequence separates it cleanly from everything of similar size and colour.
