A brilliant golden-yellow scalycap covered in pointed sulphur-yellow scales on both cap and stipe, fruiting on mossy conifer stumps and logs.

Overview

The Flaming Scalycap is the most vividly coloured member of Pholiota and one of the most photogenic fungi of northern conifer forest. Against green moss on a spruce stump, a cluster of these saturated golden-yellow, shaggily scaled caps looks almost artificial, and the species is rarely confused once seen.

Pholiota is a genus of rusty-spored, wood-inhabiting fungi in the Strophariaceae characterised by scaly caps, ringed or ring-zoned stipes and gills that shift from pale yellow to cinnamon as the spores mature. P. flammans sits among the dry-to-slightly-viscid, brightly pigmented species, and its epithet means flaming, referring to the fiery yellow of the whole fruiting body.

It is a strictly wood-inhabiting fungus of cool northern and montane forests, and one of the clearest illustrations of how Pholiota species can be separated from the many other clustered wood fungi by the combination of a scaly surface and a rusty spore deposit.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 2–8 cm across, convex to bell-shaped and expanding to broadly convex, sometimes almost flat in age. The ground colour is an intense golden-yellow to orange-yellow, slightly viscid beneath the scales in wet weather, and the surface is densely covered with erect to recurved, pointed, sulphur-yellow to tawny scales arranged in rough concentric rings. The margin is inrolled when young and hung with yellow veil fragments.

Gills

The gills are adnate, crowded and narrow, bright sulphur-yellow when young and darkening through olive-yellow to rusty brown or cinnamon as the spores mature. Their edges usually stay paler yellow.

Stipe

The stipe is 4–10 cm long and 4–10 mm thick, equal or slightly tapering downwards, often curved where it emerges from vertical wood. Above the ring zone it is smooth and yellow; below, it is conspicuously shaggy with recurved sulphur-yellow scales matching those of the cap, right down to the base. The veil leaves a fibrillose ring zone rather than a firm membranous collar, and this zone is usually stained rusty by falling spores.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is yellow, thin in the cap margin and firmer in the stipe, with a mild to slightly earthy odour. The spore print is rusty brown to cinnamon brown, confirming Pholiota against similarly coloured white-spored fungi.

Where and when it grows

The Flaming Scalycap fruits on coniferous wood — stumps, logs, fallen branches and occasionally standing dead trunks — with spruce the classic host and fir and pine also used. It particularly favours well-decayed, mossy wood in shaded, humid situations, and fruits singly, in small groups or in loose clusters of a few fruiting bodies joined at the base rather than in massive tufts.

It is a species of boreal and montane conifer forest, widespread across northern Europe, northern Asia and northern North America, extending southwards in mountain ranges. Fruiting runs from late summer into autumn, peaking in the cool damp weeks of early to mid autumn.

Ecological role

The species is a saprotroph on coniferous wood, causing a white rot in which both lignin and cellulose are degraded, leaving the wood pale, soft and fibrous. It typically colonises wood that has already lost its bark and been softened by earlier decay organisms, and its mycelium works through the outer sapwood layers.

By fruiting on mossy, well-rotted conifer stumps it belongs to the mid-to-late stage decay community, sharing the resource with mosses, liverworts and a range of invertebrates. The bright pigmentation, which extends throughout the flesh, is unusual in the genus and is presumed to relate to protection of the fruiting body tissues from light and grazing in the exposed positions on top of stumps where it often fruits.

Similar species

Pholiota squarrosa is the most likely confusion, with a similarly shaggy scaly cap and stipe, but it is dry ochre-buff to straw-brown rather than vivid yellow, its gills develop a distinct greenish tinge before turning rust, and it fruits in dense clusters at the bases of hardwoods. Pholiota aurivella and P. adiposa are golden-yellow but have distinctly viscid, slimy caps with flattened gelatinous scales rather than dry pointed ones, and grow high on hardwood trunks.

Gymnopilus junonius is another large rusty-spored clustered wood fungus but has a fibrillose rather than shaggily scaly orange-tawny cap and forms very large fused tufts at hardwood bases. Tricholomopsis rutilans shares a yellow ground colour but its scales are purple-red, its gills are yellow and stay yellow, and it gives a white spore print.

Common questions about Flaming Scalycap

What makes the scales look so shaggy?
The cap cuticle and the outer stipe layer break up into upturned, pointed tufts of tissue as the fruiting body expands. On this species they are sharply pointed, recurved and the same sulphur-yellow as the surface, giving cap and stipe a bristly, almost spiny texture arranged in rough concentric zones.
How can I be sure it is a Pholiota and not a look-alike?
Take a spore print. *Pholiota* gives a rusty to cinnamon brown deposit, and the gills themselves turn from yellow to rust as they mature. A yellow scaly wood mushroom with a white spore print and gills that stay yellow is something else, such as *Tricholomopsis rutilans*.
What wood should I search for it on?
Conifer wood, above all spruce, and also fir and pine — stumps, logs and fallen branches, preferably well rotted and covered in moss, in shaded and humid forest. It is not a species of hardwood stumps, so the substrate is a useful early filter.
Does the whole fruiting body stay yellow?
The cap, stipe, scales and flesh are all yellow, but the gills change as the fruiting body ages: they begin bright sulphur-yellow, pass through olive-yellow, and finish rusty cinnamon once loaded with mature spores. Older specimens can therefore look considerably duller than fresh ones.
