Overview

The Flat Oysterling (Crepidotus applanatus) is one of the commonest members of a large genus of small, stalkless, wood-inhabiting fans. What defines Crepidotus is the combination of a shell- or kidney-shaped fruitbody attached sideways to wood, soft thin flesh, and — decisively — a brown spore deposit, which sets the genus apart from the superficially similar white-spored Pleurotus, Pleurocybella and Panellus.

C. applanatus is characterised by its flattened profile, its white to cream colour, and the finely striate or lined appearance of its margin when moist. It typically fruits in crowded overlapping troops on well-rotted hardwood, so that lower fruitbodies are visibly dusted brown by spores falling from those above — a field cue that makes generic identification simple even without taking a print.

The genus is taxonomically difficult, with many similar small white species separated largely on spore ornamentation and cystidia, so a confident species-level name in Crepidotus usually calls for microscopy. The flattened, smooth, distinctly fan-shaped fruitbody and globose finely punctate spores are the standard combination cited for this species.

How to identify it

Cap

The fruitbody is 1–5 cm across, fan- to shell- or kidney-shaped and characteristically flattened rather than convex, attached laterally to wood by a narrowed point. The surface is white to cream, ageing pale buff or tan, smooth and bald or with only minute fibrils near the attachment, moist and slightly translucent when fresh so that the gill lines show faintly through the margin as fine striations.

Gills

Gills are close, narrow, and radiate from the attachment point. They begin white, then pass through cream to pale cinnamon and finally warm brown as the spores mature — the darkening gills are one of the easiest ways to recognise a Crepidotus in the field. Edges are even and finely fringed under magnification.

Stipe

Essentially absent. Attachment is directly to the wood at a narrowed lateral point that may bear a small tuft of white down; there is no true stalk, no ring and no volva.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin, soft, watery-white and pliable, unchanging when cut and drying to a papery consistency. The spore print is pale to warm brown; spores are globose and finely punctate or minutely spiny, a shape that distinguishes this species from Crepidotus relatives with ellipsoid or almond-shaped spores.

Where and when it grows

Crepidotus applanatus grows on dead hardwood — fallen logs, stumps, buried wood, large branches and woody debris — with a preference for material already well into decay and often barkless and softened. It is recorded from a broad range of broadleaved trees and only rarely from conifers. Fruitbodies characteristically appear in dense overlapping troops, sometimes covering the whole flank of a rotting log.

The season runs from early summer through autumn, with fruiting closely tied to periods of sustained wet weather; the thin fruitbodies appear quickly after rain and shrivel within days in dry conditions. The species is widespread across temperate North America, Europe and Asia, and is one of the most frequently encountered small white fungi on decaying hardwood in damp woodland.

Ecological role

This is a saprotroph and a decomposer of hardwood in the later stages of decay, contributing to white rot as it consumes the residual lignin and cellulose in softened logs and buried woody fragments. It is not a primary coloniser of sound timber; instead it exploits material already opened up by earlier fungi, working alongside a community of small agarics, ascomycetes and invertebrates in the final breakdown of coarse woody debris.

Its strategy is one of rapid, low-cost fruiting: very thin flesh, no stalk to build, and a mass of small fans erupting simultaneously after rain, each shedding brown spores that settle on the fruitbodies and wood below. The abundance and speed of this response makes the genus a significant, if inconspicuous, contributor to nutrient cycling on the forest floor, returning carbon and minerals from dead wood to the soil.

Similar species

Other Crepidotus species are the main difficulty: C. mollis is larger with a distinctly gelatinous, elastic cap skin that stretches when pulled and has ellipsoid smooth spores; C. variabilis is much smaller, more irregular, and often grows on twigs and stems rather than logs; C. cesatii and C. luteolus differ in spore shape and cystidia. Confident separation within the genus usually requires microscopy of spore shape and ornamentation.

Away from the genus, small white Pleurotus and Pleurocybella porrigens are separated by their white spore print and, in the case of Angel Wings, much narrower crowded gills on conifer wood. Panellus stipticus is tan with a suede-textured cap, a short distinct lateral stalk and white amyloid spores. Schizophyllum commune has hairy caps and split, folded gill edges rather than true blade-like gills. Looking for brown spore dust on fruitbodies lower in a cluster is the fastest way to confirm Crepidotus.
