A heavy chalk-white milkcap with a velvety fleecy cap, widely spaced cream gills that stain brown, and thick white latex from broken flesh.

Overview

Lactifluus vellereus, long placed in Lactarius and still widely listed under that name, is one of the bulkiest fungi of European broadleaf woodland. Mature specimens can be enormous and remarkably heavy for their size, with thick dense flesh and a broad funnel-shaped cap that collects rainwater and leaf litter.

The cap surface is the source of both the common and scientific names: it is dry and covered in a short fine down that feels like felt or fleece under the fingertips, quite unlike the smooth chalky cap of Lactarius piperatus. In dry weather the surface can crack into a fine mosaic while retaining its velvety feel.

The genus Lactifluus was separated from Lactarius on molecular grounds, though the two remain morphologically similar: both are latex-producing members of the Russulaceae, both have brittle granular flesh, and both lack a ring and a volva. L. vellereus is one of the flagship species of the segregate genus.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 8–25 cm across and occasionally larger, at first convex with a tightly inrolled margin, then deeply depressed and funnel-shaped. It is chalk white to cream, discolouring ochre, buff or brownish with age and handling, and the surface is dry with a short velvety to fleecy pubescence that is easily felt. Dry specimens may show fine cracking.

Gills

Gills are adnate to decurrent, thick, and notably well spaced — a strong contrast with the crowded gills of Lactarius piperatus — with occasional forking. They are white to cream, sometimes with a faint yellowish or greenish tinge, and they stain brown to reddish-brown where bruised or where latex has dried.

Stipe

The stipe is 4–8 cm tall and 2–4 cm thick, very short relative to the cap width, solid, hard and tapering downward. It is white and finely velvety like the cap, unpitted, and lacks any ring, volva or basal bulb. The stipe is so short and stout that large specimens sit almost on the litter surface.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is very thick, white, firm to hard, and browning slowly where cut. It exudes abundant thick white latex which stays white or dries with a faint cream tone on the flesh. The spore print is white to cream, and the spores are small with low warts and incomplete ridges.

Where and when it grows

The Fleecy Milkcap grows with broadleaf trees, chiefly beech and oak, and also with hornbeam and other deciduous species. It favours heavy loam and clay soils and is common on woodland banks and slopes, fruiting in leaf litter beneath mature trees, often in scattered groups or partial rings.

It is widespread through temperate Europe including Britain and Ireland, extending east across Eurasia, with related species in North America and Asia. Fruiting runs from midsummer into autumn. Because the flesh is so dense, fruiting bodies persist for weeks, drying and discolouring in place rather than collapsing, and old blackened specimens are a familiar sight on the beech-wood floor.

Ecological role

Lactifluus vellereus is ectomycorrhizal with beech, oak and other broadleaf trees. Its mycelium forms a thick mantle over fine root tips and a Hartig net between cortical cells, trading soil nutrients and water for tree-derived carbon. Its large, carbon-expensive fruiting bodies reflect the substantial resources moving through mature beech-wood mycorrhizal networks.

The fungus is commonly parasitised by Hypomyces species, which coat the fruiting body in a coloured crust and suppress gill development, and by other moulds that colonise the persistent decaying flesh. Fungus gnat larvae and beetles tunnel through mature caps, and the long-lasting fruiting bodies act as a durable nutrient resource in the woodland litter, dispersing spores over a much longer period than most soft-fleshed agarics.

Similar species

Lactarius piperatus is the closest match in shape and colour but has a smooth, matt cap without any velvety feel and gills that are extremely crowded and narrow rather than thick and well spaced. Lactifluus bertillonii is virtually identical to L. vellereus in cap texture and gill spacing and is separated chiefly by its latex reaction with potassium hydroxide, which turns strongly yellow-orange.

Lactarius deceptivus in North America shares the large white funnel form but shows a distinctive cottony roll of tissue along the young inrolled margin and a coarser cap surface. Russula brevipes is a similar bulky white funnel with a short stipe, but it produces no latex whatsoever from cut gills or flesh, and its gills are crowded and narrow.
