A slender, brilliant sulphur-yellow mushroom that appears overnight in the pots of houseplants and in greenhouse beds, with a powdery pleated cap and a fragile ringed stem. It collapses within a day, often before anyone notices it opened.

Overview

Leucocoprinus birnbaumii is the fungus almost everyone meets in a flowerpot rather than in a forest. It belongs to Leucocoprinus, a genus of small, thin-fleshed, white-spored Agaricaceae related to the parasols but built on a far more delicate plan: pleated caps, hollow stems, and tissues so fine that the whole fruiting body wilts within hours of expanding.

Its colour is the immediate giveaway. Young buttons are an intense egg-yolk to sulphur-yellow all over, dusted with a mealy powder that rubs off on the fingers, and even faded specimens keep yellow tones on the gills and stem base. Because the mushroom is short-lived, a pot may show a fresh bright cap in the morning and nothing but a limp yellowish thread by evening.

The species is pantropical in origin but has been carried worldwide in potting compost and now fruits year-round in heated buildings, conservatories and greenhouses far outside the tropics. Outdoors in warm regions it appears in mulch, compost heaps and rich garden soil during the summer rains.

How to identify it

Cap

2-6 cm across, starting as a narrow egg or cylinder, then opening through a conical bell shape to broadly convex and finally almost flat with a low central umbo. The surface is bright sulphur to lemon-yellow, densely covered in a fine mealy or granular powder that concentrates at the centre and can be wiped away. The outer half of the cap is deeply and regularly pleated, the grooves following the gills beneath, and the whole cap pales toward buff or greenish-yellow with age and sunlight.

Gills

Free from the stem, moderately crowded, soft, pale yellow to yellowish-cream, narrowing toward the margin. They never darken to brown or black and the gill edges are finely powdery under magnification.

Stipe

3-10 cm tall but only 2-5 mm thick, hollow, brittle, yellow and slightly mealy, tapering upward from a small swollen or bulbous base. A thin, delicate yellowish ring sits in the upper half; it is easily knocked off and is frequently missing on specimens that have been watered or brushed against.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh very thin, soft and yellowish, unchanging when cut. The spore print is white despite the yellow gills, and the spores are smooth, thick-walled and ellipsoid with an apical germ pore - a standard feature of the family.

Where and when it grows

The natural habitat is warm, humid, humus-rich ground: forest litter, rotting plant debris and compost in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa and Asia. In cooler climates it survives entirely indoors, fruiting from the peat and bark in houseplant pots, greenhouse benches, conservatory borders and interior landscaping in shopping centres and offices.

Because the mycelium travels in commercial potting compost, fruiting can appear in a newly bought plant weeks after purchase, usually following heavy watering and warm temperatures. Outdoor fruiting in temperate zones is confined to hot summer spells in mulch, compost heaps and manured beds. There is no fixed season indoors - a pot may produce flushes at any time of year.

Ecological role

This is a saprotroph that digests dead plant material, particularly the peat, bark fines, coir and leaf mould that make up potting compost. Its mycelium spreads through the medium as fine whitish or pale yellow threads and can persist for years in a pot, producing repeated flushes whenever moisture and warmth coincide. It takes nothing from the living plant, whose roots are simply sharing the container.

In its native tropical habitats the same mycelium performs routine litter decomposition, releasing nutrients locked in fallen leaves and woody debris. The extreme fragility of the fruiting body reflects a strategy of fast, cheap, frequent spore release rather than a long-lasting structure.

Similar species

Leucocoprinus cepistipes shares the pleated powdery cap, free gills and fragile ring but is white to cream with at most a brownish disc, and its stem base swells into an onion-like bulb. Leucocoprinus fragilissimus is even more delicate, with a pale greenish-yellow, almost transparent cap whose flesh is a mere film over the pleats and a thread-thin stem.

Conocybe apala, another slim mushroom of pots and lawns, has a pale tan conical cap without a powdery coating, no ring, and drops a rusty-brown spore print. Small yellow Bolbitius species have a slimy, not mealy, cap surface and likewise leave brownish prints rather than white ones.

Why does it appear in houseplant pots?
Its mycelium arrives in commercial potting compost and lives on the peat, bark and coir in the pot. Warmth and watering trigger fruiting, so the mushrooms can appear long after the plant was bought.
Does it harm the houseplant it grows with?
No. It is a decomposer of dead organic matter in the compost and has no relationship with the living roots, which simply share the same container.
Why do the mushrooms vanish so quickly?
The flesh is extremely thin and holds little water, so once the pleated cap expands and releases spores the whole structure wilts and collapses, often within a single day.
What colour spore print does it leave?
White, despite the bright yellow gills - a useful check against yellowish species with brown or rusty prints.
