Fluted Bird's Nest Identification Guide
A lens-level guide to the shaggy little splash cups of wood chips and mulch: reading the fluted grey interior, the tethered blackish peridioles and the tearing lid, and telling them from Cyathus olla and Crucibulum laeve.
What You Are Actually Looking At
The first encounter with a bird's nest fungus is usually accidental. You are crouched over a mulched border, a woodchip path or a heap of rotting twigs, and what registers is a patch of small brown objects that look like miniature vases or shaggy thimbles, dozens of them packed close together over a few square centimetres of wood debris. Then you notice that some of them hold several tiny grey discs stacked inside like eggs in a nest, and the structure clicks into place.
Everything about this fungus is small. A mature cup stands 8 to 15 mm tall and measures 6 to 10 mm across the mouth, so a hand lens is not optional. Get down to substrate level, and expect to find a mixed population with young sealed cups alongside open ones and weathered empty ones from earlier in the season.
The Shape and Exterior
The fruit body is an inverted cone or narrow vase: widest at the rim, tapering down to a narrow base that sits on a small brown mycelial pad glueing it to the wood. Look at the profile from the side; the flare should be modest and even, not trumpet-like.
The outside is the first diagnostic surface. It is coarsely shaggy — covered in stiff, tangled, woolly hairs that are long enough to see plainly with a lens and that mostly sweep downward and outward, giving young cups a distinctly hairy, unkempt look. Colour is reddish brown to dark greyish brown, darkening with age and weather. Old cups that have stood through rain lose much of the pile and become smoother and greyer, so judge this character on fresh material.
The Lid and the Fluted Interior
Young fruit bodies are closed. A pale buff to whitish membrane stretches across the mouth like a drumhead, sealing the chamber; this lid tears and falls away as the cup matures, and its ragged remnants often persist as a fringe around the rim. Finding a few sealed cups in the colony confirms you have a nest fungus rather than a small cup ascomycete, which never has such a lid.
Now the single most important character. Look inside an open cup with a lens, angling it to the light. The inner wall is smooth, silvery grey to lead grey or greyish brown, and it is marked with distinct longitudinal grooves running from the rim down to the base, like the flutes of a column. Those grooves are sharp and regular, and they are what the species is named for. Confirming them is the difference between a confident identification and a guess.
The Peridioles
The 'eggs' are peridioles, and they should be examined individually. Each cup holds roughly five to fifteen, and each is a hard, flattened disc about 1.5 to 2 mm across — lens-shaped rather than spherical. Colour is dark grey to blackish, though fresh ones are sometimes wrapped in a thin whitish film that wears off.
Tease one out gently with a pin and you will usually pull with it a fine coiled cord, the funiculus, which anchors the peridiole to the cup wall and ends in a sticky pad. This cord is the dispersal mechanism: when a raindrop strikes the cup at the right angle, the peridiole is flung out and the cord unravels behind it, the sticky pad catches on a stem or leaf, and the cord whips the peridiole around the support and ties it there. The whole open-cup geometry is a splash cup engineered for exactly that. Being able to demonstrate the cord under a lens is excellent confirming evidence.
Slice a peridiole in half. The wall is hard and dark, and the interior is a paler, packed spore mass. The tissue of the cup itself is leathery and tough rather than fleshy — it flexes rather than snaps.
The Spore Print Problem
You cannot take a conventional spore print from this species, and it is worth understanding why rather than concluding that the attempt failed. The spores are not shed from an exposed surface; they are sealed inside the peridioles and are released only after the peridiole has been thrown clear, attached to vegetation and eventually broken down. Setting a cup on paper overnight will produce nothing.
The substitute procedure is to crush a peridiole between two slides with a drop of water and examine the contents. The spores are large for their group, smooth, thick-walled and broadly ellipsoid, and simply confirming that the peridiole is packed with such spores rather than being a seed, an insect egg case or a grain of grit is a useful check in itself.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is a wood decomposer. The substrate is small woody debris: bark mulch, wood chips, fallen sticks and twigs, decaying branches on the forest floor, and occasionally tough herbaceous stems and old cones. Landscaped beds and freshly chipped paths are as productive as woodland, which is why it is one of the fungi most people meet first in a garden.
Fruiting runs from summer through late autumn, peaking in cool damp weather, and colonies are gregarious — hundreds of cups over a patch of chips is normal. Because the mycelium runs through the chip layer, the same bed produces repeatedly until the wood is exhausted.
Separating the Look-alikes
Cyathus olla is the commonest confusion. Its cup is broader and distinctly flaring, almost trumpet-mouthed, with a rim that often turns outward; the exterior is finely felted rather than shaggy; and — decisively — the interior is smooth and ungrooved. Its peridioles are larger and a paler grey.
Crucibulum laeve has a squatter, crucible- or barrel-shaped cup, a much brighter ochre to cinnamon-yellow exterior with a fine even felt, a smooth ungrooved pale interior, and white to buff peridioles that are rounder and thicker. The lid is ochre rather than whitish.
Cyathus stercoreus is shaggy outside like this species but has a smooth, ungrooved, blackish interior, larger black peridioles, and grows on dung and heavily manured ground rather than wood chips.
Nidula species hold numerous small pale peridioles embedded in a jelly-like matrix, with no funicular cord at all — pull one out and nothing trails behind it.
Sphaerobolus stellatus is a fraction of the size, orange, and contains one single ball rather than a nest of discs.
Small cup fungi such as Peziza and old acorn cups are ruled out at once: neither ever contains peridioles, and neither has a sealed lid stage.
