Fluted Black Elfin Saddle Identification Guide

How to read a dark, crumpled saddle on a deeply ribbed stem: the lobed fertile head, the chambered lacunose stipe, the white spore deposit, and the colour and stem tests that separate it from Helvella crispa and Helvella atra.

First Impressions and Setting

This species has a habit of hiding in plain sight. You are typically on a shaded woodland path edge, a mossy bank, a gravelly track through conifers or a patch of disturbed ground where soil has been turned, and the fungus is a dark grey to near-black shape against dark soil. Many people walk over it. What eventually resolves is a fungus in two obvious parts: a crumpled, irregular head that looks like a piece of folded dark leather, sitting on a stem that appears to have been carved with deep vertical channels.

The whole thing stands 5 to 12 cm tall, occasionally more, and does not look like an agaric at all. There are no gills, no ring and no cup at the base. Once you register the folded saddle plus deeply ribbed stem combination, you are in the elfin saddles, and colour and stem structure take you the rest of the way.

Reading the Head

The head is 2 to 5 cm across and is best described as saddle-shaped, though 'irregular' is more honest. Typically two, sometimes three, lobes droop downward on either side of the stem apex, with the fungus folded and buckled in ways that vary from one fruit body to the next. Look for lobe margins that are curled under, and note that in many collections parts of the lobe margin fuse against the stem, forming closed pockets. Some heads are so contorted that the saddle shape is only apparent once you turn the fungus over.

Colour is the second half of the name: dark grey, grey-brown, sooty or nearly black on the upper surface, sometimes paler and mottled in dry weather. This upper, outer surface is the fertile one — this is an ascomycete, and the spores are produced in a layer over the exposed top of the saddle rather than on any gill or pore surface. Feel it: smooth to slightly undulating, sometimes minutely wrinkled, never toothed and never porous.

Turn it over. The underside of the lobes is noticeably paler, a grey to whitish-grey, and finely downy or frosted under a lens. That contrast between a dark fertile upper surface and a paler pruinose underside is a normal feature and helps confirm the genus.

Reading the Stem

The stem is the diagnostic structure, and it is worth studying properly. It is stout for the height of the fungus — 3 to 10 cm tall and 1 to 2.5 cm thick — and its surface is thrown into deep, sharp, irregular longitudinal ribs separated by elongated pits and pockets. Those pockets are the lacunae the scientific name refers to. Run a thumbnail into one and it disappears; the ribs are not shallow flutes but genuine folded walls.

Cut the stem across and the interior is chambered and hollow: a cross-section shows a set of irregular internal cavities separated by partitions, not a single round tube and not a solid pith. This chambered cross-section is one of the cleanest confirmations available in the field.

Stem colour ranges from whitish-grey through ash grey to dark grey or blackish, and is very often a shade or two paler than the head, so a black saddle on a grey ribbed stem is the classic look.

Flesh and Colour Change

The flesh throughout is thin, brittle and waxy-textured, whitish to pale grey, and it snaps cleanly. There is no latex, no milky exudate, and no colour change on cutting or bruising — a cut surface left for twenty minutes should look much as it did at the start. Any strong reddening, blueing or yellowing points away from this species.

Getting a Spore Deposit

Ascomycetes give prints, but they need a different approach. Cut the head off, set it fertile-side down on a piece of dark paper or a glass slide, cover it with a bowl to hold humidity, and leave it several hours. Because the fungus shoots its spores actively rather than dropping them, the deposit is often flung out in a diffuse halo rather than a sharp silhouette, and it can be sparse.

The deposit is white to very pale cream. A useful trick is to breathe on a fresh fruit body in still air with a low sun behind it; a mature one will often release a visible puff of spores. Under the microscope the spores are large, smooth and ellipsoid, each with a single conspicuous central oil droplet, produced eight to a sac — a combination that immediately confirms the group.

Substrate, Season and Distribution Notes

This fungus fruits from soil rather than wood: bare or mossy ground, humus, path edges, gravelly banks, and disturbed or compacted soil, under both conifers and broadleaved trees. In many regions it is notably associated with recently burned ground and with the churned soil of tracks and clearings. Fruiting is mostly late summer through autumn, sometimes continuing into early winter in mild areas.

One taxonomic point matters for anyone comparing collections across continents. What was long treated as a single widespread species has been split; western North American conifer material and oak-associated material have been separated into their own species, so a collection named with confidence in one region may key differently in another. Note the associated trees and the substrate when you record it.

Separating the Look-alikes

Helvella crispa is structurally near-identical — same saddle head, same deeply ribbed and chambered stem — and is separated almost entirely on colour. It is whitish, cream or pale buff throughout rather than grey to black, and its lobe margins tend to be more crisped and wavy. Faded, sun-bleached dark material is the one situation needing care; check the darkest, most sheltered parts of the head.

Helvella atra is smaller and dark, but its stem is the key: slender, roundish or merely compressed, minutely downy, and not deeply lacunose or chambered.

Helvella elastica and Helvella macropus have smooth, terete, unribbed stems and paler tan to grey-brown saddles.

Gyromitra infula is saddle-shaped but a warm tan to reddish brown, and its stem is smooth to slightly wrinkled and simply hollow, never carved into sharp ribs and pockets.

Morels are sometimes raised as a comparison. They are ruled out instantly: a morel has a pitted, honeycombed head that is attached to the stem at its base and a single continuous hollow chamber inside, not a free-hanging folded saddle on a ribbed stem.
