The Moment You Spot It
Picture a mild, damp afternoon in late summer or early autumn, standing in an open stand of oak or beech growing on thin, well-drained, acidic ground - the sort of place where bilberry, bracken and patches of moss run between the trunks instead of deep black leaf mould. Scattered through the litter are medium-sized mushrooms the colour of a fox's back: dry, matt, tawny-orange caps that read as rusty terracotta from ten paces rather than plain brown. They stand singly or in loose troops on soil, never in tight tufts on a stump. That combination - a dry foxy cap, woodland floor, broadleaf trees overhead - is the opening frame for Fool's Webcap.
The genus impression should arrive before the species. Cortinarius fruit bodies share a stocky, solid build, a rusty spore deposit that eventually dusts everything nearby, and the cortina itself: a cobwebby veil of fine silky threads that spans the gap from cap margin to stipe in young buttons, then collapses into a faint fibrous zone as the cap opens. If you find such a zone on the stipe already stained rust-brown by settling spores, you are in Cortinarius, and the identification problem narrows enormously.
Reading the Cap
Take a mature cap in hand and turn it in raking light. It measures roughly 3-8 cm across, occasionally a little more, convex at first and expanding to broadly flat with a low blunt umbo; it never becomes deeply funnel-shaped. The surface is completely dry to the touch, and under a hand lens it breaks up into fine radial fibrils and small flattened scales rather than staying smooth. Colour runs from tawny orange through foxy red-brown to a duller brick, sometimes with a faint olive cast near the margin in wet weather.
Two negatives are as useful as the positives here. The cap is not viscid - even after rain it stays matt, without the greasy film of a waxcap or the polished kid-leather feel of many Lactarius. And it is not strongly hygrophanous: it does not fade dramatically in broad watery streaks as it dries, the way so many small brown webcaps in subgenus Telamonia do. A dry, evenly foxy, minutely scaly cap that holds its colour is a real character.
Gills and the Cobweb Veil
Turn the mushroom over; the gills are the most memorable feature. They are thick, comparatively few in number, and conspicuously widely spaced - you can slide a fingernail between them without effort. Attachment is adnate to slightly notched, never running down the stipe. Young gills are a warm saffron to cinnamon-orange; as the spores ripen they deepen to rust-brown, and older specimens look almost cinnamon-red underneath. Gill edges stay even rather than serrated, and there is no forking.
On a young button, look for the cortina stretched across the gill face like a few strands of spider silk. Once it collapses, hold the stipe up to the light and look for the fibrillose zone where those threads landed - in mature specimens it is a rusty smudge, coloured by the falling spore mass.
The Stipe and Its Base
The stipe is 4-9 cm tall and 1-2 cm thick, roughly cylindrical or tapering downwards to a narrowed, sometimes almost pointed base. The ground colour is pale yellow-ochre to tawny, usually a shade lighter than the cap, and it is overlaid with fine longitudinal silky fibrils in a slightly brighter yellow. There is no membranous ring, no sac-like volva, no abrupt bulb and no rooting cord.
Note the pattern of the yellow fibrils carefully, because this is the detail that separates Fool's Webcap from its nearest relative. Here they are vague, longitudinal streaks - smeared and poorly defined, following the length of the stipe. They do not organise themselves into sharp transverse bands or belts.
Flesh and Colour Change
Split a fruit body lengthwise with a knife. The flesh is pale ochre to yellowish throughout, thickest in the centre of the cap, firm rather than brittle, and it does not marble, mottle or ooze. There is no latex. Crucially, there is no colour change: cut flesh does not turn blue, red, black or violet over several minutes of watching. The odour is faint - most people read it as slightly radish-like or simply earthy - and it is never farinaceous, floury or sweetly aromatic.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the stipe flush with the gills, set the cap gill-side down on a sheet of white paper (a strip of dark card alongside helps judge pale deposits), cover it with a bowl to stop draughts, and leave it four to eight hours. Cortinarius is a generous printer. Expect a thick rusty-brown to cinnamon deposit; thin films can look misleadingly pale, so let it build. Under a microscope, spores are almond-shaped, roughly 8.5-11 x 5.5-6.5 um, and coarsely warted over the whole surface - a texture typical of the group Fool's Webcap belongs to.
Substrate and Season
This is a strictly ectomycorrhizal fungus, which means it is anchored to living tree roots and will never appear on a log, a stump, wood chip, dung or a compost heap. Its principal partners are oak and beech, with birch, hornbeam and sweet chestnut recorded as well. It favours warm, dry, acidic and often sandy soils in open broadleaf woodland, and it is very much a species of central and southern Europe, thinning out towards the far north. Fruiting runs from late summer to mid-autumn, generally a week or two after sustained rain has broken a warm spell. If your mushroom is growing from wood, standing in a lawn away from trees, or fruiting under pure spruce in a mossy upland bog, the identification needs rethinking.
Working Through the Look-alikes
Cortinarius rubellus. The closest relative and the hardest call. It is a mushroom of conifers - spruce and pine, typically in upland or northern woodland with Sphagnum and bilberry underfoot. Its cap is more sharply conical with a pointed umbo, its stipe is noticeably more slender, and that stipe carries distinct transverse ochre-yellow girdles rather than smeared longitudinal streaks. Habitat plus stipe pattern usually settles it.
Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius). Frequently confused because of the colour, but structurally quite different: the underside bears blunt, forking ridges that run down onto the stipe, not free-standing blades. The whole fruit body is egg-yolk to apricot yellow rather than foxy brown, there is no cortina at any stage, and the spore print is pale ochre-pink.
False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca). Thin-fleshed and soft, with repeatedly forked, deeply decurrent orange gills, a white spore print, and a habit of appearing on conifer litter and rotten wood.
Gymnopilus junonius. Superficially rusty and similarly coloured underneath, but it grows in large tufts directly on stumps and buried roots, carries a persistent membranous ring rather than a cobweb, and has crowded rather than widely spaced gills.
Cortinarius bolaris. A pale-ground webcap broken up by flat red-brown scales, giving a two-tone effect quite unlike the even foxy wash here, with paler gills.
Field Checklist
