Foxy Bolete Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Leccinum vulpinum, the brick-red scaber-stalked bolete of northern Scots pine woods. Covers the black scabers, the slow pink-to-grey flesh change, the blue-green stipe base and how to split it from the birch and aspen boletes.

Where the Encounter Happens

Foxy Bolete is a mushroom of northern and montane pine woods. The typical find is on a cool, bright morning in late summer, walking through open Scots pine on sandy, acid ground, with heather, bilberry and hummocky feather-moss between the trunks. The fruit body pushes up through the moss carpet on a long, pale, ramrod-straight stipe, and the first thing you register from a distance is the colour of the cap - a deep, saturated foxy red-brown, closer to brick or terracotta than to the softer orange of the birch-associated boletes. Even before you kneel down, the silhouette says Leccinum: a tall, narrow-based, distinctly upright mushroom rather than a squat one.

Confirm the genus first. Leccinum boletes are recognised by scabers - small, coarse, dark tufts of stiff hairs studding the length of the stipe like a five-o'clock shadow. Once you have scabers plus a spongy pore layer, you are in the genus, and the species work becomes a question of scaber colour, cap colour, flesh colour change and, above all, which tree you are standing under.

Reading the Cap

The cap ranges from about 5 to 15 cm across, occasionally larger in a good season. Young caps are strongly hemispherical, almost like a clenched fist, and they expand only slowly to convex; even old fruit bodies rarely flatten out completely. The surface is dry and finely felted or suede-like, matt rather than shiny, and it becomes slightly greasy only in prolonged wet weather. In dry spells it can crack into shallow patches across the disc.

Colour is the headline: a deep foxy red-brown, brick-red or rust-red, often darkest at the centre and only slightly paler at the margin. It lacks the yellow-orange tone of Leccinum versipelle and the softer apricot-orange of L. aurantiacum. Look at the margin closely - the cap cuticle usually overhangs the pore layer as a narrow sterile flap, which is a good Leccinum signature.

The Pore Surface

Turn it over. There are no gills; instead a thick, spongy layer of vertical tubes ends in a flat field of very small round pores, several to the millimetre. In a young fruit body the pore surface is whitish to pale cream, and as the mushroom ages it turns dull buff, greyish-cream and eventually a slightly dingy olive-grey. Press a thumb firmly into the pores and wait: the bruise develops slowly to a dull olive-brown or greyish tone, never bright blue and never red.

The tube layer separates cleanly from the cap flesh if you push it with a thumb - a useful genus-level check that distinguishes boletes from polypores, where the tubes are fused into the flesh.

Stipe, Scabers and Base

The stipe is the most informative part of this mushroom. It is long - often 8-15 cm - relatively slender, and tapers upward from a thicker base, so the whole fruit body sits like a club driven into the moss. It is frequently curved where it has grown around a root or through deep moss.

The ground colour is white to greyish-white, and it is densely ornamented with scabers arranged in rough vertical lines. In Foxy Bolete these scabers are dark from an early stage: dark brown to blackish-brown even on young buttons, and they become more emphatically black with age. That early darkness is a genuinely useful character, because several relatives start out with pale, whitish scabers that only darken later.

Dig the base out rather than cutting it off at ground level. The base is often slightly swollen and, once exposed and split, frequently shows a blue-green to turquoise flush in the extreme basal flesh. It is not a sac, a bulb with a rim, or a volva - just a tapering, sometimes rooting foot.

Flesh and Colour Change

This is where you should slow down and watch. Slice the fruit body from cap to base and set your timer by the second hand. The flesh starts firm and white throughout. Within a minute or two the cut surface begins to flush a soft wine-pink or greyish-rose, particularly in the stipe. Over the following ten to twenty minutes that flush deepens through slate grey to a dark greyish-black. The stipe base separately shows the blue-green tone mentioned above. This slow white to pink to grey-black sequence, with a blue-green foot, is the classic Leccinum colour-change signature, and Foxy Bolete performs it reliably.

There is no latex, no milky exudate, and no immediate bright blue. The odour is mild and pleasantly fungal.

Spore Print

Boletes print well if you give them time. Cut the stipe off flush, rest the cap pore-side down on white paper, and cover it with a bowl for six to twelve hours. Expect an olive-brown to snuff-brown deposit - never white, never pink, never rusty red. Under the microscope the spores are long and fusiform (spindle-shaped), roughly 13-17 x 4-5.5 um, smooth, with the tapered outline typical of the genus.

Substrate and Season

Foxy Bolete is ectomycorrhizal and species-faithful: its partner is pine, and in most of its range specifically Scots pine. It grows on soil, usually acid and sandy or peaty, commonly in moss and among heather or bilberry, in open woodland or on the margins of stands rather than in dense shade. Geographically it belongs to boreal and montane Europe, extending well into Scandinavia and northern Russia, with scattered records in mountainous parts of central Europe. Fruiting runs from mid-summer through to the first hard frosts of autumn. If you find a scabered bolete under aspen or birch, the name is wrong regardless of how red the cap looks.

Separating the Close Relatives

Leccinum versipelle (Orange Birch Bolete). Grows with birch. Its cap is orange to orange-yellow rather than deep brick-red, and the stipe scabers are black on a white ground from the beginning. Cut flesh goes grey-black with a strong blue-green base, much as here, so the decisive characters are tree and cap hue.

Leccinum aurantiacum. Associated with aspen and poplar. The cap is a warm apricot to brick orange, and the scabers begin pale, rusty or whitish and only darken to reddish-brown with age - quite different from the black-from-birth scabers of Foxy Bolete.

Leccinum albostipitatum. Also an aspen species, with a bright orange-red cap and a conspicuously white, pale-scabered stipe that stays pale far longer.

Leccinum piceinum. A spruce associate with a duller, browner and often more wrinkled cap.

Leccinum scabrum and allies. Brown-capped birch boletes with soft flesh that barely changes colour, or discolours only faintly pinkish; they are never brick-red.

Red-pored boletes such as Suillellus and Neoboletus. These have red or orange pore surfaces, reticulate or dotted stipes with no scabers, and flesh that flushes blue instantly.

Common questions

How do I know I have a Leccinum at all?
Look for scabers: coarse dark tufts of stiff hairs studding the stipe in rough vertical lines, over a paler ground. Add a spongy tube layer that peels cleanly away from the cap flesh, a tall tapering stipe rather than a squat one, and an olive-brown spore print, and the genus is settled.
Which tree does Foxy Bolete grow with?
Pine, and across most of its range specifically Scots pine. It is ectomycorrhizal, so it is bound to living roots and grows from soil, typically acid sandy or peaty ground with moss, heather or bilberry, in open boreal and montane woodland. A scaber-stalked bolete under birch, aspen or spruce will be a different species.
What colour change should I expect when I cut the flesh?
White flesh flushes a soft wine-pink or greyish-rose within a minute or two, then darkens over ten to twenty minutes through slate grey to greyish-black. Separately, the extreme base of the stipe often shows a blue-green or turquoise tone. The change is gradual rather than an instant blue flash.
How does it differ from the Orange Birch Bolete?
Chiefly by tree and cap colour. Leccinum versipelle partners birch and has an orange to orange-yellow cap, while Leccinum vulpinum partners pine and has a deep brick or foxy red-brown cap. Both carry blackish scabers and both blacken when cut, so the tree association and the hue of the cap carry the decision.
