Fragile Brittlegill Identification Guide
A close-focus guide to a small, extremely brittle purple-and-olive brittlegill of damp acid woodland, built around the finely toothed gill edges, the beaded striate margin and a near-white spore print.
Where and How You Meet It
This is a small brittlegill of damp, shaded, acid ground. The typical find is in a mossy hollow under birch, in wet oak or beech woodland, or on the needle-strewn margins of a spruce plantation, often where sphagnum or a thick moss carpet holds moisture. It grows singly or in small scattered groups rather than in troops, and because it is small and often dark-capped it disappears against wet leaf litter.
The immediate impression is fragility. Everything about the fruit body is thin, light and easily broken; if you pick it carelessly you will arrive back at the path holding three separate pieces. That extreme brittleness is not incidental — it is one of the working characters for the species, so note how it behaves in the hand before you start dissecting it.
Reading the Cap
Cap diameter is 2 to 5 cm, occasionally 6, so this sits at the small end of its genus. The shape passes from convex through flat to shallowly depressed in the centre, and the surface is slightly greasy or tacky when wet, drying to a low shine.
Colour is the least reliable character here and you should expect to be misled by it. The cap is characteristically mottled and mixed rather than uniform: purple, violet, wine-red, blackish-purple, often with a very dark, almost black centre, and frequently blotched or washed with olive, greenish, grey, ochre or dull red toward the margin. Rain-washed material can fade to a pale, almost buff shadow of that. Do not build the identification on colour; build it on the structural characters below and treat the colour as context.
Two structural features on the cap are useful. First, the cuticle peels easily — you can typically strip the skin from the margin halfway to three-quarters of the way toward the centre in one piece. Second, the margin becomes distinctly tuberculate-striate with age: short radial grooves develop, and the ridges between them break into small bumps or beads visible with a lens. That beaded, grooved rim on a small brittle purple cap is a strong pointer.
The Gills — the Decisive Character
Turn the cap over and get a hand lens on the gill edges. In this species the gill edges are finely toothed: irregularly serrate, eroded or notched, as if very finely nibbled. This is the single best macroscopic character for the species, it is visible with a good lens on fresh material, and most of its closest relatives have smooth, entire gill edges.
Otherwise the gills are adnexed to almost free, moderately spaced rather than crowded, fairly deep for the size of the cap, and white to very pale cream throughout, ageing barely creamier. They are exceedingly brittle: draw a fingertip across them and they shatter rather than bend, which is the family signature.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 3 to 6 cm tall and 6 to 12 mm thick, cylindrical or very slightly thickened toward the base, and pure white with no flush of colour. It is smooth to faintly longitudinally wrinkled, without a ring or a volva, and the base is simply rounded off with white mycelial threads binding moss and litter.
Cut it lengthwise. The interior is spongy and stuffed at first and becomes chambered or hollow with age, and the whole thing snaps across cleanly like a stick of chalk rather than tearing into fibres. That clean granular fracture, produced by the rounded cells packed through the tissue, is what defines the brittlegills as a group and separates them at a stroke from fibrous-stemmed genera.
The flesh is white and thin, and it does not change appreciably on cutting — at most it greys very faintly in age. There is no latex. The smell is faint and fruity, often compared to apple or coconut, and is best assessed by crushing a piece of gill tissue.
If you carry ferrous sulphate, the standard chemical spot test for the genus gives a pale pink to salmon reaction on the stipe surface here, which is a useful confirmation but not a substitute for the gill-edge check.
Taking a Spore Print
Spore print colour is essential in this genus, and it must be read from a thick deposit. Cut the stipe off flush, set the cap gill-side down on a piece of clear glass or white card, cover it with a bowl and leave it six to twelve hours — longer than you would for a thicker-fleshed mushroom, because the cap dries out fast.
Then scrape the deposit into a compact heap with a blade and view it on white in good daylight. A thin scatter always reads too pale. The result here should be white to the very palest cream, at the whitest end of the genus range. That near-white print, together with white gills, a white stem and a small mottled purple-black cap, brackets the species tightly.
Substrate and Season
This is a root-associate species, forming partnerships with tree roots rather than rotting anything. Its preferred partners are birch first, then oak and beech, and it also occurs with spruce and pine in mixed and coniferous woodland. It favours acid, moist, humus-rich or peaty soils, and it is common in mossy hollows, along wet woodland rides and around the margins of boggy ground. Fruiting runs from midsummer through autumn, typically peaking after prolonged wet weather.
Separating the Look-alikes
Russula atropurpurea overlaps in colour and can be a similar dark purple-black, but it is a noticeably firmer, sturdier fungus with a thicker stipe, its cap margin does not develop the strongly beaded striations, and its gill edges are smooth and entire under a lens. It is also more usually a fungus of drier oak and birch ground.
Russula betularum is the birch-bog companion and shares the extreme fragility and near-white print, but its cap is a pale pink, rose or nearly white rather than mottled dark purple, and its gill edges are entire.
Russula mairei and Russula nobilis are bright, even scarlet, firmer in the hand, and strongly tied to beech; their cuticles peel only at the margin, not halfway to the centre.
Russula queletii shares wine-purple tones but has a stipe distinctly flushed purple or lilac, grows with spruce, gives a cream rather than near-white print, and has entire gill edges.
Russula sardonia also has a purple-flushed stem, plus gills that turn a definite yellow with age, and it is a pine specialist.
Anything with fibrous, tearing stem tissue, decurrent gills, latex or a coloured spore print belongs to another genus entirely, and the clean chalk-snap test will tell you that in the first ten seconds.
