Fragile Dapperling

Perhaps the most insubstantial gilled mushroom in the field guide: a wafer-thin, deeply pleated yellowish-green cap stretched over its gills like a parasol skin, on a stem no thicker than a wire. It collapses to a smear within hours of opening.
Overview
Leucocoprinus fragilissimus takes the delicate construction of its genus to an extreme. Where most gilled mushrooms have a fleshy cap, this species has little more than a membrane - a layer of tissue sometimes only a few cells thick, draped over the radiating gills so that the cap appears as a set of translucent pleats with the gill edges showing through from above.
It sits in the Agaricaceae alongside the parasols and dapperlings, and shows all the family signatures: gills free from the stem, a white spore print, and a partial veil that leaves a ring. In this species, though, the ring is a barely visible collar and the whole fruiting body is so weakly built that touching it, or even a gust of wind, is enough to tear the cap.
It is essentially a warm-climate fungus, common in the humid woodlands and gardens of the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and comparable regions of Asia and Africa. Where it occurs, it typically appears in scattered numbers on the morning after heavy rain and is gone by afternoon.
How to identify it
Cap
1.5-5 cm across, opening from a narrow egg through a bell shape to a shallow, almost flat parasol. The surface is pale sulphur to greenish-yellow, strongest at the small darker central disc, and fades to nearly white toward the margin. Almost the entire cap is taken up by deep radial pleats that run from the disc to the edge, so the outline is scalloped and the tissue between the pleats is translucent enough to show the gills through it.
Gills
Free from the stem, distant, very narrow and thin, white to pale yellowish, giving little substance to the underside of the cap. They do not darken with age; the whole mushroom simply pales and then dissolves into a limp film.
Stipe
4-9 cm tall and only 1-2 mm thick, hollow, wiry, whitish to pale yellow, sometimes with a faintly swollen base. A minute, fragile ring sits near the middle of the stem and is frequently lost, leaving only a slightly roughened zone.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh essentially absent - a membranous layer that offers no resistance when handled and cannot be sectioned cleanly. The spore print is white, and the spores are smooth, thick-walled ellipsoids with a germ pore, matching the rest of the genus.
Where and when it grows
The Fragile Dapperling grows on decaying plant matter in warm, humid conditions: leaf litter under broadleaf trees, mulched borders, compost, lawn thatch and the soil of greenhouses and conservatories. It favours shaded, sheltered ground where moisture is retained, and often fruits singly or in loose scattered groups rather than in clumps.
Its distribution is pantropical and subtropical, with a strong presence in the southeastern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and warm parts of Asia, Africa and Australasia. In temperate regions it turns up only under glass, where heated humid conditions imitate the tropics. Fruiting follows warm rain and is highly ephemeral, with individual mushrooms lasting a matter of hours.
Ecological role
This is a litter saprotroph. Its mycelium threads through fallen leaves, mulch fragments and other soft plant debris, breaking down cellulose-rich tissue and returning nutrients to the topsoil. Because the substrate is fine and quickly exhausted, the fungus invests almost nothing in the fruiting body, producing a structure that is little more than a spore-bearing umbrella held up long enough for the print to fall.
That trade-off - minimum tissue, maximum surface area, extremely short lifespan - is a recurring strategy among tropical litter fungi, where warmth and humidity allow spores to be released quickly and repeatedly rather than from a durable structure that must weather dry spells.
Similar species
Leucocoprinus birnbaumii is a deeper egg-yolk yellow with a noticeably powdery cap surface and enough flesh to survive being picked up, and its stem is stouter with a small bulb. Leucocoprinus cepistipes is larger, white with a brown disc, mealy-granular rather than translucent, and has a clearly onion-swollen stem base.
Parasola plicatilis is superficially very similar in its pleated parasol cap and thread-like stem, but it is greyish-tan rather than yellow-green, has no ring at all, and drops a blackish-brown spore print. Small Marasmius species also grow on litter with wiry stems, but their caps are tough and pliant rather than membranous and they lack a ring.
