A stout dapperling of nettle beds and rich ground, its dry ochre-brown cap bristling with erect pyramidal spines that rub off at a touch and its gills forking near the stem.

Overview

Long treated as Lepiota aspera or L. acutesquamosa, this species is now generally placed in Echinoderma, a small genus split from Lepiota for the members whose caps carry erect, pointed, pyramidal warts rather than flat fibrous scales. Everything else is recognisably lepiotoid: free white gills, a white spore print, a membranous ring and no volva.

The spines are the whole point of the fungus. On a young cap they stand upright in dense concentric rings, dark ochre to chestnut-brown, each a small firm pyramid of tissue that can be flicked off with a fingernail, leaving a paler scar. Older or rain-battered caps lose most of them and can look almost smooth, which is when the species becomes puzzling.

A second useful feature sits underneath: the gills of Echinoderma asperum frequently fork and interconnect near the stipe, a habit unusual among the dapperlings. Combined with the strong, sharp, slightly rubbery odour of the flesh and the shaggy scaly lower stem, it makes a distinctive package once learned.

How to identify it

Cap

5-12 cm across, convex then broadly flat, dry and matt. The ground colour is pale buff to ochre and it is covered, most densely over the disc, with numerous erect, dark ochre-brown to chestnut, pointed pyramidal spines or warts arranged in rough concentric rings. These detach easily, so weathered caps may be nearly bare in the middle and spiny only near the margin. The margin often carries hanging veil remnants when young.

Gills

Free from the stipe, crowded, narrow, white to cream, and notably forked and sometimes anastomosing near the stipe, occasionally appearing to run onto a collar. They discolour dull cream to pale brownish in age.

Stipe

6-12 cm long and 1-2 cm thick, whitish above the ring and pale brown below, where it is covered in soft scurfy to woolly brownish scales matching those of the cap. The ring is large, membranous and often fragile, its upper face whitish and smooth while its underside is roughened with brown scaly patches. The base is swollen into a rounded to slightly clavate bulb without any abrupt rim or sac.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh white, firm, sometimes flushing faintly pinkish or brownish where cut, with a strong, sharp, unpleasant odour often likened to rubber or gas. The spore print is white; spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid.

Where and when it grows

It favours rich, nitrogen-enhanced, disturbed ground: nettle beds, hedge bottoms, compost-enriched borders, woodchip mulch, the edges of woodland tracks, coppice, parkland, gardens and old ruins. It also appears in broadleaved woodland on humus-rich soil, particularly where litter has accumulated deeply, and is often associated with elder and nettles.

The species is widespread across Europe and occurs in North America and parts of Asia. Fruiting is mainly from late summer through autumn, with fruit bodies appearing singly, in scattered troops or in small clusters. Its preference for made ground means it turns up regularly in urban parks and on landscaped verges.

Ecological role

Echinoderma asperum is a saprotroph of humus and plant litter. It decomposes leaf and stem debris in the top layer of soil and is especially at home where nitrogen has accumulated, which is why nettle beds and compost-influenced ground suit it so well. It forms no association with living tree roots.

By specialising on nitrogen-rich, disturbed sites, it occupies a niche shared with relatively few agarics and helps recycle the dense herbaceous litter that builds up under nettles, elder and hedge vegetation. The stout, well-armoured fruit body with its heavy veil is well suited to pushing up through this coarse, tangled litter layer.

Similar species

Amanita echinocephala also has a spiny cap but is a much larger, whitish to pale grey-green fungus with a deeply rooting, sharply bulbous base ringed with warts, gills that are not forked, and a firmer stipe. Cystoderma species carry granular, mealy cap surfaces rather than discrete pyramidal spines, are much smaller, and have a distinct sheathed lower stem with a hooped ring.

Echinoderma calcicola is very similar but larger and paler with coarser spines and a preference for calcareous ground, while Lepiota clypeolaria is far more slender, has flat fibrous scales rather than upright spines, and wears a loose woolly sheath on the lower stem instead of scurfy brown scales. Young Chlorophyllum rhacodes can appear spiny but has a thick movable double ring and flesh that reddens strongly when cut.
