A small, pale, stalkless earthstar whose fibrous mouth is ragged and fringed but never enclosed in a sharply outlined court. One of the commonest earthstars of woodland litter.

Overview

The Fringed Earthstar is the plain, dependable species of the genus and often the first earthstar a walker meets. Its outer wall splits into five to nine slender rays which fold back to leave a small buff spore sac sitting directly on them, with no stalk, no collar and no beak. The only ornament is the mouth, a low conical peristome built of fine fibres that separate into a soft, ragged fringe — the feature that names the species.

What matters for identification is what the mouth lacks as much as what it has. Unlike the closely similar Rounded Earthstar, the fibres here run out into the surrounding sac surface without any sharply outlined circular court or groove marking a boundary. That single negative character, checked with a hand lens, resolves most difficult specimens.

It is a modest fungus, usually 2–5 cm across when open, pale buff to whitish when fresh and browning as it weathers, and it frequently fruits in troops or arcs across the litter of the woodland floor.

How to identify it

Star and rays

Expanded fruit bodies are 2–5 cm across. The outer peridium splits into 5–9 narrow, fairly thin rays that recurve steadily and often arch until the tips take the weight, tilting the sac upward. The inner ray surface is whitish to pale buff when fresh, ageing dull brown and cracking; the outer surface carries a felt of mycelium bound with soil and litter.

Spore sac

The sac is 0.8–2 cm across, globose to slightly flattened, pale buff to greyish-cream, smooth or minutely mealy, and strictly sessile — sitting straight on the star with no stalk, apophysis or pinched neck.

Peristome

The apical mouth is low and conical, fibrillose, and the fibres split into a soft ragged fringe. Critically, it is not enclosed in a delimited circular court and shows no grooves or furrows; the fibrous zone grades imperceptibly into the sac surface.

Interior

Unopened fruit bodies are onion-shaped and buried. Inside, the gleba is white and firm at first, ripening to a fine brown spore powder around a slender columella, released in puffs when the thin sac wall is compressed.

Where and when it grows

The Fringed Earthstar grows in leaf and needle litter on the woodland floor, in both broadleaf and coniferous woods, and also in shelterbelts, plantations, shrubberies, mulched garden beds, churchyards and hedge banks. It shows a preference for calcareous and humus-rich, well-drained soils, and is frequently found under beech, yew, hazel and conifers.

Fruiting runs from late summer through late autumn, with dried stars persisting into winter. It is widespread and common across Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and is recorded more sparsely from other continents; it is one of the most frequently encountered earthstars in northern temperate woodland.

Ecological role

This species is a saprotroph of leaf litter, needle duff, humus and fine buried woody debris. Its mycelium spreads through the fermenting layer, and fruit bodies commonly appear in groups, lines or partial rings, reflecting the outward growth of a single colony through the litter.

Spore release is passive and rain-driven. Each drop striking the thin papery sac compresses it and puffs brown spores through the fringed mouth; because the recurved rays lift and tilt the sac, the emerging cloud clears the litter surface and is picked up by air movement.

Similar species

The Rounded Earthstar (Geastrum saccatum) is the critical comparison. It is likewise sessile with a fibrillose mouth, but its peristome sits inside a clearly delimited, slightly sunken circular court with a sharp outline; in G. fimbriatum no such boundary exists.

The Collared Earthstar (Geastrum triplex) is much larger, with a thick fleshy inner layer that cracks to form a raised collar around the sac. The Rosy Earthstar (Geastrum rufescens) is bigger with thick rays flushing pinkish when fresh. Any stalked species — the Crowned, Beaked or Striated Earthstars — is excluded immediately by the visible stalk, and the last two additionally by their grooved beaks.
