Frost's Amanita Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Amanita frostiana, the small orange striate-margined Amanita of eastern North American mixed forest. Covers the collared bulb, the whitish warts, the globose inamyloid spores and how to separate it from Amanita flavoconia.

The Setting and the First Look

Frost's Amanita is a small, brightly coloured mushroom of eastern North American woodland. Most encounters come between midsummer and early autumn, in mixed forest where eastern hemlock, white pine, oak and birch grow together on acid, humus-rich soil - the New England and Appalachian type of woodland, often in the damp shade near a trail edge or a mossy bank. What catches the eye is a small orange dome pushing through the leaf litter, bright as a tangerine, with scattered pale flecks on its surface. Beside it there may be several more, in a loose scattered group rather than a tight cluster.

The scale matters. This is a much smaller mushroom than the Fly Agarics it superficially resembles: a mature cap of 3-5 cm is typical, and 6 cm is a large one. Its build is delicate rather than robust, with a slender stipe and a comparatively thin cap.

Establishing the Genus

Before working on the species, run the Amanita checks. The gills should be free of the stipe. There should be a partial veil leaving a ring, and universal veil tissue left as warts or patches on the cap and as something structured at the base. The spore print should be white. And the whole fruit body should be excavated, not snapped off, because the shape of the base carries the identification.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 2.5-6 cm across, convex at first and flattening to plane or slightly depressed, and it is bright orange to orange-yellow - usually more intensely orange in the centre and fading to yellow towards the margin. The surface is slightly tacky when wet and dries to a satin sheen.

Scattered across it are the remains of the universal veil: soft, floccose warts that are white to pale cream or faintly yellowish, rather than the vivid egg-yolk yellow of some relatives. Rain removes them easily, so a washed cap may be nearly bald.

Now the character that does the most work. Hold the cap edge-on against the sky and study the outer 5-10 mm of the margin. In Frost's Amanita it is distinctly striate - grooved with fine radial lines that correspond to the gills beneath, and often tuberculate-striate, meaning the ridges between the grooves are slightly bumpy. This striation is obvious on a mature cap and is one of the two field characters that separate this species from its most persistent double.

Gills and Stipe

The gills are free, crowded, moderately broad and white to pale cream. Under a lens the edges are often minutely floccose and may carry a faint yellow tinge. Short gills of several lengths are interspersed among the full-length ones.

The stipe is 4-9 cm tall and slender, roughly 5-12 mm thick, tapering slightly upwards. It is white to pale yellow, sometimes with a faint yellow blush towards the apex, and often finely fibrillose or minutely powdered. The ring hangs high on the stipe as a delicate skirt, white to yellowish, and it is fragile enough that wind and rain frequently destroy it - so a ringless specimen is not disqualifying if the rest fits.

The Base - Look for the Collar

This is the second decisive character, and it is why you must dig rather than pluck. Frost's Amanita has a basal bulb that is rounded to slightly turnip-shaped, and at its upper edge sits a distinct collar: a narrow, free, upturned rim or roll of volval tissue that stands away from the stipe like a shallow cuff. Slice the base lengthwise and you will see that rim in cross-section as a small flange. It is not a deep membranous sac, and it is not a loose scatter of crumbs.

Field workers often describe this as a "collared bulb", and it should be assessed on a young, undamaged fruit body, since insects and rough handling can obliterate it.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the mushroom from cap to base. The flesh is white and stays white - there is no reddening, no bluing, no browning over the following twenty minutes. Just under the cap cuticle there is often a thin layer tinted pale yellow, which is normal. The flesh is soft and rather fragile, and the odour is mild and unremarkable.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe off flush, place the cap gill-side down half on white paper and half on black, cover with a bowl, and leave for six to eight hours. The deposit is white. Microscopy is genuinely useful for this species: the spores are globose to subglobose - essentially round rather than ellipsoid - about 7-9 um in diameter, and they are inamyloid, meaning they do not stain blue-grey in Melzer's reagent. Round, non-reacting spores place the mushroom in section Amanita with the Fly Agarics, and away from the section that contains its nearest look-alike.

Substrate, Partners and Season

Frost's Amanita is ectomycorrhizal and appears from soil and litter, never from wood. It favours mixed forest containing both conifers and hardwoods, with eastern hemlock, pines, oaks and birches all recorded as partners, on acidic, well-drained but moist soils. Its distribution is centred on northeastern North America - New England, the Great Lakes, eastern Canada and south along the Appalachian chain. Fruiting runs from July into September, sometimes later, and follows summer thunderstorms. Fruit bodies are usually solitary or in small scattered troops.

Separating the Look-alikes

Amanita flavoconia. The most persistent double, and the reason this species has a reputation for being difficult. It shares the small size, orange cap and yellow-tinged veil, but three characters differ: its warts are a bright chrome or egg-yolk yellow rather than whitish; its cap margin is smooth or only faintly striate; and its stipe base is an unrimmed bulb surrounded by loose yellow volval crumbs rather than a clean upturned collar. Under a microscope the difference is absolute - A. flavoconia has ellipsoid amyloid spores, while Frost's Amanita has globose inamyloid ones.

Amanita muscaria var. guessowii. The yellow-orange American Fly Agaric is far larger, with caps commonly 8-20 cm, a non-striate or only shortly striate margin, a stipe base carrying several concentric rings of shaggy white volval scales, and a much more substantial ring.

Amanita crenulata. Paler, buff to dull yellow, with grey-tinged powdery veil remnants and a smaller, less well-defined bulb.

Amanita gemmata and relatives. Pale straw or buff rather than bright orange, and generally larger and stouter, though they share the striate margin and collared bulb.

Russula and Hygrocybe species. Orange caps abound in these genera, but neither has a ring, a bulb or a volva, and Russula flesh snaps like chalk with no fibres.
