Frost's Bolete Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Exsudoporus frostii, the lacquered blood-red bolete of eastern American oak woods. Covers the weeping amber droplets on the pores, the coarse red net on the stipe, the instant blue bruising and the red-pored boletes it resembles.

First Impression

Few boletes announce themselves as clearly as Frost's Bolete. You come across it on a humid summer morning in eastern North American oak woodland - often at a woodland edge, along a grassy roadside bank under oaks, or on a mossy slope in mixed oak and beech - and what stops you is a cap of deep, saturated blood red with a distinctly lacquered, varnished shine, as if it had been dipped in enamel. Beside that colour, the second detail that registers is the stipe: a thick red column covered in a coarse, raised net, unusually bold for a bolete. And if the fruit body is young, the pore surface is beaded with small amber droplets, so the whole underside glistens.

This is a mushroom you can often name from three metres away, which is unusual among the red-and-blue boletes. The work then becomes confirming it rather than deducing it.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 5-15 cm across, hemispherical when young and expanding to convex or broadly flat. Its colour is a rich crimson to dark blood red, sometimes darkening towards blackish-red at the centre in age, and it holds that intensity far better than most red boletes. The surface is smooth, viscid to sticky when moist, and even when dry it retains a glossy, polished quality. In hot dry weather the cuticle cracks into a network of shallow fissures with yellowish flesh showing between the plates - this areolate look is normal in older fruit bodies and does not change the identification.

Touch the cap firmly with a fingertip and wait a moment: the bruise darkens to blue-black.

The Pore Surface

Turn it over and study the underside carefully, because it holds two of the best characters.

First, colour. The pores are dark red to deep crimson in young fruit bodies, dulling to brownish-red or orange-red with age, and they are very small and round, several to the millimetre. The pore field looks almost solidly red rather than mottled.

Second, the droplets. Young, actively growing specimens exude clear to amber-yellow droplets of liquid from the pore mouths, which pool and glisten across the surface and eventually dry to darker spots. This "weeping" is exactly what the genus name Exsudoporus refers to, and while it fades in older or drier weather it is close to conclusive when present.

Now press the pores. The blue reaction is immediate and dramatic - the red surface goes dark blue to blue-black within a couple of seconds, faster than in almost any other red-pored bolete. The tube layer itself is yellow when sliced, and it too flashes blue.

The Stipe and Its Net

The stipe is 4-12 cm tall and stout, often 1.5-3 cm thick, and frequently swollen or bulbous towards the base. Its ground colour is red - sometimes deeper red above and yellower at the extreme base - and it is covered over most of its length with a coarse, prominent, raised reticulum: a mesh of ridges forming elongated cells, deeply cut and easy to see and feel without a lens. The net is itself red, often a slightly deeper shade than the ground.

That combination of a red net on a red stipe, coarse enough to read at arm's length, is a genuinely limited character among boletes. Note that the reticulation covers most of the stipe rather than being confined to the top third. Dig the base up and check that it is simply tapering or bulbous - there is no volva, no sac, no rooting cord and no ring.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the fruit body vertically. The flesh is pale yellow to lemon-yellow throughout, sometimes flushed reddish immediately beneath the cap cuticle and towards the base. On exposure it turns blue within a second or two, an intense blue that then slowly fades back towards a dingy yellow-brown over tens of minutes. There is no latex and no milky exudate. The odour is mild and faintly sweet.

Taking a Spore Print

Sever the stipe flush with the pore layer, lay the cap pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to exclude draughts, and give it six to twelve hours. The deposit is olive-brown to yellow-brown. It is worth doing even when you are confident, because it separates boletes from any red-capped polypore or gilled mimic. Microscopically the spores are smooth, elongate-ellipsoid to subfusiform, roughly 11-15 x 4-5.5 um.

Substrate, Partners and Season

Frost's Bolete is ectomycorrhizal, so it grows from soil in association with living tree roots and never on wood. Oak is the dominant partner across its range, with beech and other hardwoods also recorded. It favours the warmer, more open parts of a wood - verges, clearings, grassy banks and the edges of trails - where the ground is moist but well drained.

Its distribution is eastern and southeastern North America, from New England south through the Appalachians to the Gulf states, with related populations reported further south into Mexico and Central America. Fruiting runs from June through September, peaking after heavy summer rain, and fruit bodies appear singly, in small groups or occasionally in loose clusters of two or three sharing a base.

Separating the Look-alikes

Boletus rubroflammeus. The closest North American double. It also has a red cap, red pores and a reticulate red stipe, but the cap is dry and matt rather than lacquered and viscid, the reticulation is finer and often restricted to the upper stipe, and the pores do not weep amber droplets.

Exsudoporus floridanus. A more southern relative, generally more slender, with a paler, more brick-toned cap and less pronounced droplets. Range and stature do most of the work.

Rubroboletus species. Red-pored and blue-staining, but with pale pink, buff or greyish caps rather than a glossy blood-red one, and usually a finer reticulum or none at all.

Suillellus luridus and Neoboletus species (mostly European). Orange to red pores and instant bluing, but brownish, olive or tan caps and either a fine net or a dotted, non-reticulate stipe.

Baorangia bicolor. Rose-red cap with yellow pores - the pore colour alone separates it - plus a smooth, unreticulated stipe and a slower, patchier blue reaction.

Butyriboletus and Boletus edulis relatives. Reticulate stipes but pale or brown caps and white to yellow pores, without red anywhere.
