A rich chestnut-brown fibrecap whose umbo carries whitish felted veil remnants like a dusting of frost. Frequent on beech-wood paths and calcareous banks.
Overview
Frosty Fibrecap is one of the more attractive and better marked species in a genus of mostly sombre brown mushrooms. Its cap is a warm chestnut to date-brown, silky and radially fibrillose, and across the umbo it retains scattered patches of white felted universal veil that look for all the world like a scattering of frost or flaked whitewash. The epithet maculata, meaning spotted, refers to these patches.
It belongs to the smooth-spored group of Inocybe and, like most of its relatives, is a mycorrhizal partner of trees. In Britain and much of temperate Europe it is strongly linked with beech on chalk and limestone, appearing along the compacted edges of woodland paths where the litter layer is thin.
Because the frosted veil remnants wash off in heavy rain, older or weather-beaten specimens can look like several other dark-capped fibrecaps, so it is worth checking young fruitbodies in a troop where the veil is still intact.
How to identify it
Cap
2–7 cm across, conical at first and expanding to broadly bell-shaped or convex with a pronounced obtuse umbo. The colour is chestnut, dark tawny or date-brown, sometimes paler toward the margin. The surface is dry and radially fibrillose, splitting toward the margin with age, and bears distinctive whitish to cream felted veil patches concentrated over the umbo.
Gills
Adnexed to almost free, crowded, whitish or pale grey when young and maturing through clay-buff to a dull olive-brown. The edges are paler and finely fringed. On old specimens the gills may develop faint rusty spotting.
Stipe
4–9 cm tall and 5–12 mm thick, cylindrical and roughly equal, sometimes slightly thickened at the base but never with an abruptly rimmed bulb. It is whitish to pale ochre-brown, longitudinally fibrillose, pruinose only near the apex, and often browns where handled. There is no ring.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh whitish, sometimes browning slowly in the stipe base, with a faintly earthy to spermatic odour. The spore print is snuff-brown. Microscopically the spores are smooth and ellipsoid to almond-shaped, without nodules or angles.
Where and when it grows
Frosty Fibrecap grows from soil in broadleaf and mixed woodland, with a strong association with beech and a preference for calcareous ground such as chalk downland woods and limestone escarpments. It also occurs with oak, hornbeam, lime and occasionally conifers. Compacted path edges, banked track sides and thin-littered slopes are prime locations.
Fruitbodies appear scattered or in small troops from midsummer to late autumn. The species is widespread and locally common across Europe and is also reported from temperate North America and parts of Asia.
Ecological role
The species is ectomycorrhizal, sheathing the fine roots of beech and other broadleaf hosts in a fungal mantle and forming a nutrient-exchange interface between the root cells. Through this partnership the tree receives nitrogen, phosphorus and water gathered by a hyphal network extending well beyond the root zone, while the fungus receives sugars produced in the canopy.
Its frequency on hard-trodden path edges reflects a tolerance of compacted, low-litter conditions where tree roots run shallow. The white veil patches on the cap are the remains of a delicate universal veil that once enclosed the very young fruitbody, and they are gradually lost to rain and abrasion as the cap ages.
Similar species
Inocybe rimosa is paler, straw-ochre rather than chestnut, and never carries white felted patches on the umbo. Inocybe asterospora is similarly dark but has a stipe that is pruinose to the base and ends in a sharply rimmed marginate bulb, and its spores are star-shaped rather than smooth.
Inocybe fastigiella and other dark fibrecaps in the same group are separated mainly on microscopic characters. Hebeloma species that share the habitat are distinguished by smooth, slightly greasy caps with no radial fibre splitting and by broadly sinuate gills whose edges bead with droplets in humid weather.
