A small, strongly hygrophanous honey-brown mushroom of rotting wood, identified by rusty brown spores, a thin membranous ring dusted rust by falling spores, and clustered growth on logs.

Overview

The Funeral Bell is a small brown wood-inhabiting gilled fungus that fruits in scattered groups and modest clusters on decaying logs from late summer well into winter. It is a member of Galerina, a large genus of small, rusty-spored fungi that is best known for species growing among mosses, and G. marginata is the largest and most frequently encountered of the wood-dwelling members.

Several names formerly treated as separate species — G. autumnalis, G. unicolor, G. oregonensis and G. venenata among them — have been shown by molecular work to represent a single widespread and morphologically variable species, now gathered under G. marginata. This synonymy explains the range of cap colours and sizes reported in older literature.

In the field it is a textbook example of a hygrophanous fungus: a fresh moist cap is a rich tawny honey-brown, but as it loses water the colour retreats from the centre outward, leaving a pale ochre-buff cap with a darker damp zone at the rim, so that a single cluster can display several apparent colour forms at once.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 1.5–5 cm across, convex to broadly bell-shaped at first, then expanding to nearly flat with a low broad umbo. The surface is smooth and very slightly sticky when wet, dull and matt when dry, and strongly hygrophanous. Moist caps are tawny, honey-brown or cinnamon-brown, and the margin is faintly translucent-striate. As they dry, they fade unevenly from the centre to a pale ochre, tan or buff, often leaving a distinct darker marginal band — the marginata of the name.

Gills

The gills are adnate, sometimes with a slight decurrent tooth, close to moderately crowded, and pale tan or yellowish-brown at first. They darken steadily to a dull rusty or cinnamon brown as the spores mature, and older gill faces may look dusted or powdery from deposited spores.

Stipe

The stipe is 2–7 cm long and 2–6 mm thick, equal or slightly swollen at the base, hollow with age. It is pale brownish at the apex and darkens downwards to brown or dark brown, and the base is often covered with fine whitish mycelial fibrils. A thin membranous ring sits in the upper third; it is white and delicate at first and, characteristically, becomes dusted rusty brown on its upper surface as spores drop onto it. In older or weathered specimens the ring may collapse to a faint fibrillose zone. Below the ring the stipe is finely white-fibrillose, not scaly.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin and pale brownish, with a faintly mealy or farinaceous odour in fresh specimens. The spore print is rusty brown.

Where and when it grows

The Funeral Bell fruits on decaying wood: logs, stumps, fallen branches, wood chips and buried wood, with a strong preference for conifer wood — spruce, pine, fir and hemlock — but it occurs on hardwood as well, particularly birch, alder and poplar. Fruiting bodies appear scattered, gregarious or in small tufts of several joined at the base, generally on wood that is already well rotted and often moss-covered.

It has a broad northern-hemisphere distribution, being common across temperate and boreal Europe, Asia and North America, and has also been recorded in Australia. Its season runs from late summer through autumn and, in mild oceanic climates, into early winter, so it is often one of the last gilled fungi still fruiting on logs after frosts have cleared the woodland floor.

Ecological role

Galerina marginata is a saprotroph that causes a brown rot of wood, breaking down cellulose while leaving much of the lignin behind, so that colonised wood becomes brittle and crumbles into cubical blocks. This decay type is characteristic of a number of conifer-associated fungi and produces the reddish, friable residue commonly seen inside old spruce and pine logs.

By operating on wood at a late stage of decay it forms part of the final phase of the wood decomposition sequence, converting the residual carbohydrate fraction of a fallen trunk into fungal biomass and returning it to the forest floor as humus. Its very late fruiting season allows it to occupy a window when competition for spore dispersal is comparatively low.

Similar species

Kuehneromyces mutabilis is the closest general match, sharing clustered growth on wood, a hygrophanous two-toned cap and a ringed stipe, but its stipe is distinctly covered in small dark recurved scales below the ring, whereas the Funeral Bell's stipe is smooth to finely white-fibrillose there. Pholiota species share rusty spores but are larger, generally yellow-toned and clearly scaly on cap or stipe.

Armillaria species can look similar in colour but have a white spore print, a much thicker and more persistent ring, and gills that stay whitish rather than turning rust. Hypholoma species on the same logs have purple-brown spore prints and yellow to green gill tints. Small Conocybe and Pholiotina species have rusty spores but grow on soil and grass rather than wood, with far more slender, fragile stipes.

Common questions about Funeral Bell

What does hygrophanous mean here, and why does it matter?
It means the cap changes colour markedly as it loses water. A moist Funeral Bell cap is rich honey-brown; as it dries the fade spreads outward from the centre, leaving a pale buff disc and a darker rim. Because of this, a single cluster may show caps of several apparent colours, which has led to a lot of historical confusion in the group.
What is the rusty dusting on the ring?
It is the fungus's own spore deposit. As spores are released from the gills above, they settle on the upper face of the membranous ring and accumulate there, colouring it rusty brown. Seeing a small white ring turned rusty on top is a useful confirmation of a brown-spored fungus of this type.
Does it prefer conifer or hardwood?
Conifer wood is its main substrate — spruce, pine, fir and hemlock logs and stumps in advanced decay. It does also fruit on hardwood such as birch, alder and poplar, and on wood chip mulch, so substrate narrows the field but does not settle an identification on its own.
Why are so many old species names now folded into this one?
Names such as *Galerina autumnalis*, *G. unicolor*, *G. oregonensis* and *G. venenata* were based largely on cap size, colour and viscidity, all of which vary with moisture and age. Molecular comparison showed these forms share the same genetics, so they are now treated as a single variable species, *G. marginata*.
