A tiny orange-brown bell-shaped mushroom that erupts in enormous swarms across mossy conifer logs, recognised by decurrent veined gills and a tuft of tawny fuzz at the stipe base.
Overview
Fuzzy Foot is one of the most photogenic of the miniature wood-inhabiting gilled fungi, forming carpets of hundreds of tiny orange bells across a single decaying conifer log. Individually a fruiting body is barely larger than a match head, but the sheer density of the troops makes a colony visible from many paces away as a rusty-orange wash over green moss.
The genus Xeromphalina sits in the Mycenaceae and contains small, tough-stiped, brightly coloured species with decurrent gills and amyloid spores. The generic name translates roughly as "dry navel", referring to the dry, centrally depressed cap that gives the group its navel-like profile. Unlike the truly fleshy gilled fungi, Xeromphalina fruiting bodies are wiry and marcescent: they shrivel in dry spells and revive convincingly after rain.
Within the fungal world this species is a specialist of well-rotted, moss-covered coniferous wood in cool northern and montane forests. Its combination of vivid colour, tiny size, decurrent veined gills and a conspicuously hairy stipe base makes it one of the more confidently recognised small woodland fungi in the field.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 0.5–2.5 cm across, at first convex to distinctly bell-shaped, then flattening and developing a shallow central depression or navel. The surface is dry to slightly moist, smooth, and coloured a warm orange, tawny or rusty brown, usually darkest in the depressed centre and paler towards the rim. The margin is translucent-striate when moist, so the lines of the gills show faintly through the flesh, and it is often inrolled in young caps. The cap is hygrophanous, fading to dull ochre-buff as it dries.
Gills
The gills are conspicuously decurrent, running well down the stipe, and are noticeably distant rather than crowded. They are pale yellow to yellow-orange, and — a useful confirming feature — are interconnected by low cross-veins on the cap underside, giving a slightly netted or wrinkled look between the main plates.
Stipe
The stipe is 1–5 cm long but only 1–2 mm thick, wiry and tough rather than brittle, often curved or off-centre. It is yellowish to orange at the apex and darkens downwards to a deep reddish brown or almost blackish brown at the base. The base is clothed in a dense tuft of coarse tawny-orange hairs — the "fuzzy foot" that names the species — which usually binds fragments of moss and rotten wood.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, pliant and yellowish, with no strong odour. The spore print is white, and the spores are amyloid, which separates Xeromphalina from many similar tiny orange fungi with non-amyloid or coloured spores.
Where and when it grows
Fuzzy Foot is restricted to well-decayed coniferous wood — logs, stumps, fallen branches and buried roots of spruce, fir, pine and hemlock — almost always at a stage of decay soft enough to be colonised by mosses. It fruits in dense troops of dozens to many hundreds of individuals, frequently covering the entire upper surface of a log.
It is a cool-climate species, widespread across boreal and northern temperate forests of North America, Europe and northern Asia, and extending southwards along mountain ranges wherever conifer forest persists. Fruiting runs from late spring through autumn, with the heaviest flushes after prolonged damp weather in late summer and early autumn.
Ecological role
The species is a saprotroph, breaking down the lignin and cellulose of coniferous heartwood that has already passed through earlier stages of decay. Its mycelium permeates the softened wood, and the abundant fruiting bodies represent a very efficient conversion of that resource into spores over a short period.
By fruiting on late-stage rotten wood it belongs to the community that returns nutrients locked in fallen conifers to the forest floor, working alongside mosses, bark beetles and soil invertebrates. The tough, revivable fruiting bodies allow a single flush to release spores intermittently across several wet-and-dry cycles rather than in a single burst, an adaptation shared with several other wiry-stiped wood fungi.
Similar species
The closest relative is Xeromphalina kauffmanii, essentially identical in stature but fruiting on hardwood logs rather than conifers, and usually a slightly duller yellow-brown; substrate is the practical separator. Rickenella fibula is a similar tiny orange fungus with decurrent gills, but it grows singly or scattered directly among living mosses on the ground, has a pale pinkish-orange rather than rusty cap, and lacks the tuft of tawny hairs at the stipe base.
Galerina species that share the same rotten conifer logs are separated at a glance by their rusty-brown spore print and their adnate, not decurrent, gills, and their stipe bases lack the dense orange fuzz. Small Gymnopilus species are also rusty-spored and are generally larger with a scaly or fibrillose cap surface.
